Former British PM Margaret Thatcher has died at the age of 87. She died following a stroke.
The Iron Lady was Britain’s first female prime minister, serving from 1979 to 1990. She stood with U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II in an alliance that brought down the Soviet Union and freed millions who lived in chains behind the Iron Curtain.
Thatcher brought the United Kingdom back from the doldrums of economic stagnation and near irrelevancy to true world power status. She busted unions, moved the nation’s and Europe’s economic politics back toward freedom away from socialism, and led the UK’s war to keep the Falkland Islands when Argentina invaded to take them by force.
Margaret Thatcher transcended party labels and is regarded as Great Britain’s greatest peacetime leader, and maybe the greatest prime minister ever. She stood for her country. She stood for the freedom of the world.
A giant has passed.
