Democrat Ed Markey: If You Favor the Citizens United Decision, You're a Slave Owner, or Something

Rep. Ed Markey stands a more than decent chance of being the next senator from Massachusetts. His latest idiocy won’t be more than a brief blip in an otherwise unremarkable, mediocre career.

“I want to go to the United States Senate in order to fight for a constitutional amendment to repeal Citizens United. The whole idea that the Koch brothers, that Karl Rove can say we’re coming to Massachusetts, to any state of the union with undisclosed amounts of money is a pollution, which must be changed,” Markey said in the speech, given in Pittsfield, Mass.

He went on to say that “the Constitution must be amended. The Dred Scott decision had to be repealed, we have to repeal Citizens United.”

So that’s obviously a foolish thing to say. The Dred Scott decision kept slavery alive and helped trigger the Civil War. Citizens United lets corporations spend money of their own on political campaigns, much as Big Labor has been able to spend on political campaigns for years. The two decisions aren’t similar at all.

Rather than focus on Markey’s insane remark, though, take a look at how The Hill frames it. Their URL reads markey-compares-campaign-finance-ruling-to-slavery-ruling-draws-republican-ire.

Republicans are the bad buys here. As always.

At some point The Hill changed to a more neutral headline, “Rep. Markey compares campaign finance ruling to Dred Scott decision on slavery.” But you can see in the URL where their heads were. Democrat says something stupid, so let’s put Republicans on the spot for it.

It’s the same thing every day with the media. Irrational Democrats say irrational things, and somehow, its Republicans’ fault.
