According to Afghanistan’s Khaama Press, about 300 residents of Logar province, south of Kabul, collected $645, a hefty sum in the region, to make a 15-gram gold medal for Trump after deciding on the gesture at a local council meeting.

The reason? They liked his tweets at the time against Pakistan, reported TOLO TV.

“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!” Trump tweeted on Jan. 1.

The medal stated, “This Bravery Medal is from the Afghan people to Donald Trump, president of the United States of America.”

It was presented to the U.S. Embassy in Kabul in mid-January, and U.S. Ambassador John Bass reportedly promised that he would see that Trump got the medal.

On Sunday, Logar province tribal elder Haji Gul Nabi was assassinated in a bombing in Pul-e-Alam, the provincial capital.

The Taliban stated on their website that Gul Nabi went personally to the U.S. Embassy to deliver the gold medal.

“In an interview with TOLO television he expressed his appreciation and support for the medal and considered it a right and appropriate act,” the Taliban said. “He was killed by mujahideen in IED attack to make him face the dire consequences of his appalling action.”

Abdul Wali, a member of Logar provincial council, told TOLO, “We are very sad. He was a good man and a tribal elder. He was killed in Ramadan. People say that he was killed because of this issue [with Trump].”

There has been no reaction yet from the U.S. Embassy.
