Today, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) invited co-captain Megan Rapinoe and the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) to the U.S. House of Representatives.
She tweeted, “It may not be the White House, but we’d be happy to welcome @mPinoe & the entire #USWNT for a tour of the House of Representatives anytime they’d like.”

Rapinoe has been a controversial figure during the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, refusing to sing the national anthem, unwilling to put her hand over her heart, and having knelt in the past during the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
Rapinoe and the USWNT have been in a fight with President Trump after a video circulated on Tuesday of Rapinoe stating that “I’m not going to the f—ing White House.”
President Trump has stated that he would invite the USWNT to the White House regardless of whether the players win or lose this year’s Women’s World Cup.
The USWNT also received an invitation to visit the U.S. Senate from Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.)
She tweeted today, “While you’re in town, we’d be thrilled to have the #USWNT visit the Senate too. California natives @mPinoe @alexmorgan13 @AbbyDahlkepmer @tierna_davidson @ChristenPress have made us all proud. Kick butt next week!”

Co-captain Alex Morgan responded to Senator Harris, tweeting, “Thank you!!!! Gotta rep California loud and proud!”
Morgan has also become a controversial figure as she refused to sing the national anthem, in line with Rapinoe, in Friday’s quarterfinal match against France.
She told Time that “There’s the narrative that’s been said hundreds of times about any sort of athlete who’s spoken out politically. ‘Stick to sports.’ We’re much more than that, OK?”
With the help of goals by Rapinoe, the USWNT defeated France in the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup and has advanced to the semi-finals to play against England. As the defending champion and the team with the most first-place finishes, the USWNT is expected to do extremely well this Women’s World Cup.
