But Laurence Quetel, 67, and her dungaree-clad troupe’s juggling performance barely elicited a smile from the crowds waiting to be served lunch.
It was an incongruous performance in the squalid camp of Loon-Plage on the outskirts of Calais where 2,500 people were awaiting passage to the UK.
Only 50m away, gangs of Kurdish people-smugglers huddled in tents and plotted the next batch of crossings over the English Channel.
Their new tactic of deploying 15m-long “mega dinghies” to transport 230 people in a single journey is seen as a necessary evil by Ms Quetel, a former manager for the electrical conglomerate Phillips in her native Netherlands.
“My first feeling was, I was happy that 230 people arrived in one batch without people dying... The second [feeling] was s---, how can they put them on there,” said Ms Quetel, who took off her red nose before speaking.
She described how women and children are crammed in the middle of such boats, which come under heavy strain, often buckling under the weight of so many people…
Ms Quetel began performing for migrants under the stage name Clown Holalal after the exodus of Syrian refugees during the civil war in 2016.
She founded her company Inside Clown in 2012, having trained as a hospital clown in Holland, and has practised her trade in migrant camps in Greece, Jordan and Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the dilapidated camp in which the Dutch clowns serenade the migrants is literally run by competing gangs of human smugglers of various nationalities that routinely murder each other in power struggles for control over the smuggling routes.
Yet, touchingly, somehow they all make it work, as the gangs “share an uneasy symbiotic relationship with aid agencies” such as the clown show troupe.
All the gangs ask in return for not raping and murdering all of the bleeding-heart libs entertaining and feeding the migrants is tacit permission to run their criminal empire unimpeded.

The criminals supplement their income by selling packets of cigarettes, fizzy drinks, or charging mobile phones out of their ramshackle tents…
Violence has plagued Loon-Plage, with sporadic turf wars between Kurdish and Afghan people-smuggling gangs vying for control of the beaches along France’s northern coast.
On July 28 last year, a man in his thirties was shot seven times in a gang-related murder.
One month before, a double shooting left two dead and six wounded, including a woman and a two-year-old child.
The gangs share an uneasy symbiotic relationship with aid agencies, allowing them to provide free food, medication, washing facilities and life jackets to migrants.
In exchange, volunteers were expected to turn a blind eye to their criminal operations, according to a well-placed Kurdish source.
