‘Black in Neuro’ DEI hustle ‘disrupted by the Trump administration’
Back in the heady days of the Summer of Love, the overdose of an obscure career criminal, George Floyd, somehow inspired a band of DEI entrepreneurs and practitioners of The Science™ to solicit the public for cash money — by now a well-established tradition among social justice grifters capitalizing on liberal white guilt.

Black In Neuro started as a grassroots organization in July 2020 in response to the brutal murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, and the prevalence of anti-Black racism* in society, seen notably during the New York Central Park incident with Christian Cooper. The latter gave rise to #BlackBirdersWeek, which was the catalyst for #BlackBotanistsWeek, #BlackInAstroWeek, and our own movement, #BlackInNeuroWeek. #BlackInX initiatives are not new, and we celebrate those who came before us, such as #BlackAndSTEM. The success and reach of Black In Neuro, with engagement in over 60 countries, led us to establish ourselves as a registered non-profit organization, allowing us to become a permanent fixture** within the world of neuroscience and STEM as we push towards diversity, equity, inclusion, accountability, and justice within academia and beyond.
*So long as these freaks insist on capitalizing “B” while using lower-case w’s in “white” as an unsubtle marker of cultural domination, to my mind, that constitutes racial discrimination. Perhaps the Trump administration could sic the IRS on Black in Neuro to investigate the group’s 501(c)(3) status, as nonprofits are subject to the anti-discrimination provisions of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
**Maybe not such a “permanent fixture” after all, now that the Trump administration has weaned them off the government teat.
The money was good for a few years; DEI scientists raked in both private donations and government grant money left and right for the cause.

But the gravy train appears to be grinding to a halt.

The founders wanted other Black neuroscientists “to know that we’re here and we support each other — even if you are the only Black person in your department or your lab, you still have community and you have people that love and care about you and are trying to support you on your journey,” Angeline Dukes, one of the co-founders, said in an interview. “That still holds true now, right, where so many people are feeling alone and stressed out, having their grants canceled and just in not a great place in the same way that they weren’t in a great place in 2020.”
Now a professor at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Dukes’ work running programs to increase the diversity of neuroscientists has been disrupted by the Trump administration. One federally funded program was dedicated to supporting researchers as they transition from Ph.D. candidate to postdoctoral researcher and then professor. The program’s renewal application was sent to a study section, a group of researchers who review proposals for the National Institutes of Health, that no longer existed. Another provided two years of research experience to students who were not able to conduct research as undergraduates and wanted to attend graduate school. The funding was terminated, then subsequently reinstated because of a court ruling. But the funding opportunity for that grant no longer exists, making it unlikely that it will be renewed.
Imagine the absolute white supremacist horror of now having to pursue grant money on the basis of merit alone.
