Raymond Stock lived in Cairo for 20 years before being deported in December 2010, apparently due to his 2009 article criticizing then-Culture Minister Farouk Hosni’s bid to head UNESCO. He has translated stories by many Arab writers, including seven books by Naguib Mahfouz, whose biography he is writing.
