Universal Human Rights and the Risk of Tyranny

The 1945 UN Declaration of Universal Human Rights states that human rights are universal and should be protected. There are 30 articles in the treaty promoting free healthcare, education, “social welfare,” and other supposedly desirable privileges. Could the UN become tyrannical in enforcing universal “human rights”?

What human rights should be universal?

Some ideas:

  • Freedom of religion

  • Freedom of the press

  • Freedom of petition

  • Freedom of assembly

  • Freedom of speech

  • Right to bear arms

  • Due process/fair trial

  • The right not to be searched without a warrant

  • The right not to have soldiers take over one’s house

These rights are all guaranteed in the United States Constitution as unalienable, God-given rights. Most of them are listed by the UN declaration as such also.

The main point is that no one else has to pay for these rights. The individual is capable of defending himself or herself and advocating for their own rights. Therefore, no exploitation of other people is needed to support the rights.

What about free education, healthcare, housing, etc.? These require the labor and taxation of others for support. Nothing is “free” from a governing entity, and many feel that they get taken advantage of through taxation. Taxpayer funding is exploitation of the working and middle classes. Who will define terms such as welfare, housing, or education? Will it be the people forced to pay for these privileges? Most likely, they will not have a say about it. The entity stealing their money will also define the terms, leaving legal citizens broke, powerless, and living in a country they no longer recognize.

Something that is “free” is probably of poor quality. Parents often notice that their children come away from public schools with indoctrination, rather than education. No one can tell someone what religion they should believe in, or what (or what not) to say.

Interestingly, the United States Constitution does not list education, healthcare, or housing as unalienable rights. The Founding Fathers understood that to list them as rights would lead to exploitation of other people. The UN agreement does list them as rights, though.

The UN declaration of human rights states, in Article 15, that people should "have a nationality." On a previous version of the webpage, it said that people should be able to go to any country they wish and become citizens there. That sounds exactly like illegal immigration. Article 14 makes a provision for asylum-seekers to leave a country if there is a safety risk where they currently live. Some illegal immigrants have claimed to be asylum-seekers only to scam legitimate citizens by lying on immigration forms about their current whereabouts and why they were entering the U.S. Incidents like that open the door to situations where people illegally enter countries for any reason, like in Article 15.

The declaration does not provide any right to own or use weapons for self-defense or any other purpose. This stops the citizens from being able to fight against tyrannical governments or find food for their families through hunting. Another article says “social welfare” is a human right.

Like free education, housing, and healthcare, welfare is based on taxpayer funding. Therefore “social welfare” is really another way for government to exploit people, just like free education and free healthcare. Who will define terms such as welfare, housing, or education? Will it be the people forced to pay for these privileges? Most likely, they will not have a say about it. The entity stealing their money will also define the terms, leaving legal citizens broke, powerless, and living in a country they no longer recognize. A common concern is that illegal immigrants are coming for free education and subsidized healthcare. They also drive down the prices of labor because it is cheaper to hire them rather than legal workers. That could make legal immigrants and U.S. residents lose their jobs to cheaper labor sources.
