I’ll admit to being pretty annoyed at my friend, Monica Crowley. I have tons of work to do and deadlines to meet, but I knew her new book, What the (Bleep) Just Happened — The Happy Warrior’s Guide to the Great American Comeback, was just released yesterday, so I wanted to have a quick peek at it. Well, there are no quick peeks. It is just terrific — meaning I haven’t been able to put it down, meaning I’m not getting anything else done.
The book is smart and serious and charming and a hoot — just like Monica. But what will bowl you over is what a pleasure it is to read. If she’d decided to be a great trial lawyer instead of a great commentator, she’d have been wildly successful: She’s got the unusual gift of being able to tell a complicated story in a way that’s simultaneously articulate, accessible, and conversational. She draws you in not just because the topic — what has happened to America in the Obama years — is so weighty and timely, but because she explains it in a thematic way: You’ll process the radical ride of the last four years through the prism of American exceptionalism, self-determination, and liberty. It is only by clearly grasping what is at stake that we see, not only the imperative of defeating Obama, but the road back from the brink. Monica gives you the roadmap.
I could go on, but I’ve got to get back to … reading. Do yourself a favor and crack open What the (Bleep) Just Happened. Your sides will ache from laughing while your head pounds over what’s been done to our country, but you’ll come away confident that the comeback is only a few months away.
