PLEDGE

I’m on record as thinking that the Pledge of Allegiance is a bit weird. As a free person, the pursuit of my happiness at the expense of no one else’s is really all the allegiance a country of free people requires, at least during peacetime. And pledging allegiance… to a flag? I’m not a Christian (or a Jew or a Muslim), but if I were, I think that would strike me as being halfway to idolatry. The current politicalization of the pledge reminds me that some conservatives will support most anything, provided it’s been around long enough.

But when the time comes for it, I recite the Pledge heartily and without complaint. And while I don’t find the Pledge to be even a bit offensive, some small part of the reason I go along was summed up by Lazarus Long thusly: “Whenever the locals rub blue mud in their navels, I rub blue mud in mine just as solemnly.”

It’s just a bit weird is all.

But then there’s this from Professor Charles Angeletti:

Angeletti, who teaches at Metropolitan State University of Denver, has students learn an anti-American spoof of the Pledge of Allegiance that denounces the U.S. as a Republican-controlled bastion of injustice, all while spewing his own far-left brand of politics, according to current and former students.

“I pledge allegiance to and wrap myself in the flag of the United States Against Anything Un-American,” reads Angeletti’s version. “And to the Republicans for which it stands, two nations, under Jesus, rich against poor, with curtailed liberty and justice for all except blacks, homosexuals, women who want abortions, Communists, welfare queens, treehuggers, feminazis, illegal immigrants, children of illegal immigrants, and you, if you don’t watch your step.”

Since this guy so obviously hates this country so very much, I would politely suggest he stop suckling at its public teat, and find a more creative outlet for his frustrations, perhaps in pursuit of a Darwin Award.
