Malaysian Air Passenger Jet Shot Down Over Ukraine

SHOT DOWN

All I have to add to this story is, prepare for more just like it in the years ahead. Global lawlessness is increasing as the cost of obtaining offensive weaponry decreases. Not only is that a dangerous combination, but the two trends, absent strong global leadership, are mutually reinforcing.

The whole idea of 'surgical violence' as propounded by McNamara & co is at the heart of this. To win you have to convince the civilian population supporting it to give up. Avoiding collateral damage might burnish your humanitarian cred but until you grab the opposing populace by the neck and shove their face in the mud until they beg for mercy, you have not achieved your objective, you have not 'won'. In WWI the German army was defeated in the field, the population was not, providing fertile ground for Hitler & co. WWII was needed to correct that 'error' at horrendous cost.

The Israelis can kick Hamas and Fatah's @$$3$ over and over and over again, but until the Palestinians supporting them give up, it ain't over.

Islam is at war with everyone/thing not islam, and is at war with everyone/thing not exactly like MyIslam. They *will* have to be dealt with in ways not countenanced since Truman. Mr Fernandez of Belmont Club has a glimmering of a clue. But I fear even he doesn't go far enough, soon enough.

Actually, I believe Russia or China, when convinced, finally of the necessity will likely not shrink from what will have to be done to shut Islam down. Islam is the scorpion on the fox's back. I fear universal suffrage has emasculated this country, by design.

Okay, here's one for all the conspiracy nuts...

Remember that mysterious hole in Siberia? That was actually the underground lab where the Russians were performing genetic experiments on the kidnapped passengers from MH370. When that exploded they needed to get rid of the evidence so they piled everyone into the plane, payed off the Malaysian Airlines folks, flew it over the Ukraine, shot it down, then paid the Israelis to invade Gaza to take some of the focus away...

It's all so simple once you've had several beers to think about it...

I wouldn't be so sure that's relevant.

The plane was on an Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur route.

Thus it'd have to be at cruising altitude over Ukraine - 30 or 40,000 feet.

That's too high for any MANPADS unit to shoot down - and those are what are "cheap" and what terrorist types get.

This has to have been a real AA defense SAM unit, either permanent or truck-mobile, and thus operated by at least paramilitary units with real training.

(Russian military? Russian "separatists" who are really military? Ukrainian defectors? All I know is that "Separatists" were claiming credit for shooting down what they thought was an Antonov transport.

Though why Russian separatists would shoot down what was more likely to be a Russian transport than a Ukrainian anything is unclear... it's not like Ukraine is using heavy bombers on its own territory.)

Ah! Blair linked to an AFP report saying this: Anton Gerashenko says on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 metre when it was hit on Thursday local time by a missile fired from a Buk launcher.

The Buk is a self-propelled SAM system, though both the CIS and Ukraine use it, so that doesn't narrow down anything.

I'm not too worried about "insurgents" in general acquiring such systems and shooting down random airliners, though.
