New York City is going to war against smoking — fake smoking. Unbelievable:

On Thursday, the New York City Council made room in its legislative agenda — it was also busy commissioning a study on polystyrene foam — to pass by a vote of 43–8 (that lopsided majority an indicator of idiocy afoot) a measure that will, once Mayor Bloomberg signs it (oh, he will) shortly prohibit the vaping (that’s the word) of e-cigarettes anyplace where smoking is now banned in Gotham, bars, restaurants, offices, parks, the beach, you name it. Technically speaking, the ban will take effect as an amendment to the city’s Smoke-Free Air Act. That e-cigarettes do not emit any smoke was an irrelevance.

That’s Andrew Stuttaford at NRO, and he has quite the lengthy report. What it boils down to is this: There’s zero evidence that e-cigarets hurt anybody or have much more than a non-zero chance of causing cancer. So they must be outlawed… why?

If I had to guess, for NYC’s pushy progs, it’s just a matter of reflex.

State offices in Wyoming currently ban the use of cigarettes as well as e-cigs inside the building.

Imagine, if you will, a state employee trying to quit smoking. When the employee has a craving, he must go outside to the DESIGNATED SMOKING AREA and puff on his e-cig.

So much for quitting smoking.

That's just insane.

One of my closest friends has been trying to quit smoking for years. He tried everything -- cold turkey, gum, patches, smoking "just" a pipe. But he switched to e-cigs, and hasn't had a real smoke in months.

These things will save lives, period.

My e-cig looks more like Doctor Who's sonic screwdriver than a cigarette. Even the ones that do loosely resemble cigarettes are pretty easily distinguished from them by the glowing LEDs on the tips. I think they're being targeted because they're still primarily a nicotine delivery system; maybe NYC's fun police just don't like alkaloids. Coming soon: the war on caffeine. Perhaps for an encore they'll go after quinine.

They already shot the first legislative bullet on the war on caffeine by limiting the size of your purchase to 16 ounces.

No, the ban specifically exempted coffee-based drinks. Because even Bloomburg isn't dumb enough to get between an Manhattan vileprog and their Starbucks fix.

Perhaps if it looked like a bong the state lefties would be more likely to accept it. Would prolly work SanFranLand...

"So they must be outlawed… why?"

I heard it was because it looks too much like real smoking, and as such it makes cracking down on real smoking hard. Don't know if I buy it; as if you couldn't tell the dif from the lack of a burning tobacco smell. Perhaps there has been a pandemic loss of the sense of smell in NYC; it would explain why they vote the way they do. Maybe they could fix these things up by painting the ends bright orange like on toy guns. At this point, that doesn't seem so silly.

I heard that, except the problem wouldn't be for authorities but BETWEEN ordinary citizens who might get into fights over supposed smoking. It is a more insulting, less reasonable, and hence more likely explanation.

And it's dumb. E-cigs glow blue and green as well as red at the tip. Maybe NYC could allow the non-red tips, but I'm sure they'd invent an excuse for that, too. I've got it! The color-blind!

This proves that these "public health" crusades are about punitive secular Puritanism, not health; Our Betters and the eneMedia simply don't want to permit any pleasures they consider disreputable or "tacky."
