Maybe We Should Have Bowed More
Drudge, the master of collation and juxtaposition, strikes again.

I have Sally Field stuck in my head, exclaiming, “You like us, you really like us!” Ironically, of course.
It’s difficult to blame President Obama very much for the chaos. He certainly gave things a big push by tossing Hosni Mubarak under the bus, and Secretary Clinton’s performance has been lackluster at best. But mostly, the violence is just the latest symptom of the Arab world’s descent from sanity. Some American leadership here would save some lives, but nothing fundamental will change until two things happen:
1. Araby learns to function politely in the modern world.
2. And hahahahahahaha like that’s ever going to happen in our lifetimes.
So there you have it.
Here’s what Obama got wrong. His Drone War has been both tough and effective at taking out al-Qaeda’s leadership. It has also really pissed off the Arab Street. That’s fine — we’re used to having the Arab Street angry. They’re professionally angry; it’s what they do. The problem is, the president has tried (as is his wont) to have his cake and eat it, too. He’s tried to balance his tough guy Drone War with a personal approach of acting all lovey-dovey, cuddly-wumpus with Islam. But you can’t claim the godlike power to rain down death from above, while demanding to be loved. It makes you look feckless and weak, as though you don’t have the courage of your deadly convictions.
The Arab Street has caught on, and (with a little push from al-Qaeda?) is doing what it loves to do best: A bit of the old ultraviolence. Some killing, some rape, some burning — you know, Street-y stuff.
Meanwhile, another selection from Drudge.

Regarding our embassies as occupying forces. We are following an international convention,as are, ostensibly, the arab countries. They are all members of the UN. They mostly have embassies in western countries. They’ve claimed to have bought into the paradigm.
Therefore, they have no business getting their panties in a wad wrt our embassies. If they do, then we need to make it very clear (forget dlplomatic nice-nice) that if they don’t follow convention, then neither will we. If they want to violate our territorial integrity, then we will treat it as the act of war that it is.
Mealy-mouthed BS is what got us here. It’s time to show them the sword and make clear what the consequences are if they f*ck with us.
They love symbolism, and respect fear, right?
So let’s capture Jihadis, take them up in a helicopter, and Slice their heads off with Scimitars before dropping the bodies and heads to the ground. Seperately. Make sure the feeling-no-pain rank-and-fire Thuggery in the streets see it all. Let them know they’re next should they be feeling frisky.
A little drone strike on Tahrir Square might get their attention. Maybe a cruise missile or two just to wake them up. They understand nothing but power. Time we demonstrated some stones.
“Descent from sanity”? When were they ever sane?
While sane people finally understand that the death cult of Islam is incompatible with western norms, the Pyromaniac-in-Chief, in tandem with his anti-American surrogates, is delighted by their handiwork.
Therefore, the message from the Islamist-in-Chief is that a raggedy film is to blame for psychotic behavior from the followers of Islam, a political dogma cloaked in religious garb.

To be fair, during the Dark Ages… when Western Civilization was in chaos, Arabia kept the fires of social order going.
The problem, of course, is that they haven’t progressed much beyond 1400 A.D. or so, while the definition of “sane”, and society itself, as moved on.
This is quite overrated. Knowledge was kept alive in Christian monasteries, too.
They burned the surviving Library at Alexandria, so much for preserving “non-islamic” knowledge. Omar reportedly ordered, “…If those books are in agreement with the Quran, we have no need of them; and if these are opposed to the Quran, destroy them.”
That’s a canard. The middle so called “dark” ages were a time of political and social reordering where much of what we know as Western Civilization was born. Hospitals, the Canon of scripture, the university system, lots of real good stuff. It wasn’t all plague and feudal servitude. Come back and tell us what the muslims gave us during that period that they didn’t steal from the infidels.
Yes many islamic countries had a high cultural development during the dark ages, while europe was mired in the dark ages. But I would give some caveats:
1. I think much of this culture was due to the educated Roman, Greek, and Persian cultures that Islam took over, rather than something inherent in Islam.
2. Europe, especially Northern Europe had been one of the more backward parts of the civilized world at the time, where most culture centered around the mediteranean. But christian Europe progressed forward with the Renesiance and the Enlightenment, scientific and industrial research, traditions of free speech, personal liberty, and freedom for women.
3. But Islamic intolerance gradually destroyed the rich cultural heritage they had inherhited from the mediterenian and persian countries they conquered, and Islam either stagnated or went backward.
Thus we have todays culture of muslim grievance, where they blame colonialism for destroying their high culture, when in reality they destroyed their own culture, by remaining in the outdated traditions of the past, while europe progressed toward the future.
A: Everything, if you believe he’s incompetent.
B: Nothing, if you believe he’s a traitor, and that all of this damage to America is willful.
If you still believe option A, you are living in la-la land.
I don’t find your sentiment far-fetched.
Domestically Obama doesn’t want to ‘raise all boats’, but rather, reduce economic inequality the only way it can be centrally done – by causing people to suffer more equally.
The analogue for America on the world stage is the same – we can’t force other nations to be economically successful so let’s cut America down to size. After all, why should we not have to live with pain like the rest of the third world?
Obama’s diffidence appears slightly more rational if one believes these are his ultimate motives.
hmmm. . . maybe we should take note that Russian embassies don’t get attacked and figure out why. . .
Because the Russians never ever do anything to offend tender Muslim sensibilities.
Not ever even once.
Yeah, so true. The invasion of Afghanistan, and the war in Chechenya were such strong symbols of love…
They don’t offend them, they cut them off. Sorry…. “sensibilities” — what does that word mean, exactly?
because everybody is freaken scared shitless of the stuff those former KGB psychopaths will do to them should they attack a russian embassy. Those lads won’t be haggling over whether waterboarding is torture or not. They’ll make sure to avoid any gray areas or confusion by skipping up the line to something that doesn’t leave any questions to be asked.
Remember back in the 1970s and 80s when Americans were being taken hostage in Beruit? From what I recall, that only happened once to a Soviet. The kidnappers started receiving body parts of their family members and the hostage was released very quickly.
My boss is former Delta Force. He told me yesterday that in 1986, he was on the ground in Beruit trying to recruit an intelligence network. According to him, the 1979 Church Act had wiped out the CIA’s ground assets in the region. He’s blond haired and blue eyed. “I’ve never been so scared in my life as during those days in Beruit.”
Thats true, and they wrapped kidnapper body parts in bacon.
One word; Spetnaz.
Think of U.S. Rangers, or SEALS, except operating under roughly the ROE of the Waffen SS.
Nice? No. Designed to encourage international amity? No.
Effective?
Oh hell yes.
The moral is that war is an ugly thing. And if someone wants to be at war with you, your wishes are largely irrelevant.
It comes down to the basic principle of; What are you willing to do to win?
The track record of the Spetnaz show what the Russians are willing to do. The dithering Obama engaged in over things like the Somali pirates holding the merchant captain hostage, and then the UBL takedown, shows that however deadly and effective our SpecOps units are (and the Spetnaz really don’t want to tangle with them- trust me on this), their capabilities are worthless as long as the orders are being issued by politicians who … just want to be loved. By our enemies.
Of course, many of those politicians consider out SpecOps people, and the rest of us generally, to be their enemies. So the disconnect is probably not really all that surprising.

The Soviets figured out that it is better to be feared than loved, if you want people to treat you with great respect. Would that we would do the same.
Steve, We can kill all the Al-Qaeda leaders we want with drone attacks, new ones will come up the ranks. This is not like fighting the Nazi where if Hitler and his immediate circle are gone then Nazism is (mostly/98%) gone. The current struggle is like the conflict with the Soviet Union/communism, Stalin’s death changed the conflict but did not end it, new commies just moved up. The struggle with Islamists is a multi-decade/generational problem, the American people do not want to comprehend this. It is, I think one reason many independents voted for Obama, he seemed to promise a way to sooth over the passions in the Middle East.
Rifle308
Don’t misunderstand me, please. When I say the Drone War is a necessary thing, I don’t mean to imply it’s the only thing. It’s one — only one — component in what is rightly called The Long War.
“This is not like fighting the Nazi where if Hitler and his immediate circle are gone then Nazism is (mostly/98%) gone”
Maybe so, but I’m still in favor of wiping out that “inner circle”, just to be on the safe side……That would include the entire House of Saud, all of Mecca, Medina, Tehran, Gaza, West Bank, Jordan, the Northern half of Egypt and the Southern half of Lebanon. Followed shortly thereafter by the expulsion of all “imans” and mosques from all western countries, and the lifetime interment of all members of CAIR and their sympathetic umbrella groups her in The States.
After that, youre right, it would be more like fighting the Japs than the Krauts….Nukes and total conquest, flame throwers and no prisoners, until they quit unconditionally….force a new religion down their throats, write their constitution, and control their education systems for 40+ years to convince them, a ’la a “total recall- “ style social reprogramming regimen, that they are, and always HAVE BEEN, pacifists….
And like with the Japanese, I wont really care that they never “own up” to what they did…just having them sufficiently docile and non-threatening after we destroy their culture is good enough for me.
Because I’m a reasonable guy.
Think of someone who’s not only watched MSNBC over the past 10 years, but believes all the spin MSNBC has thrown at them over the past 10 years. Welcome to the Obama Administration — or at least, enough key players within the Obama Administration, who not only bought the negative demonization of the Republicans at the same time as they participated in it, but also believed all the hype about foreign countries and people that hated us last decade being nothing more than angry Blue Staters speaking a different language.
Of course they were going to get caught off guard, because they and their boss really believed (and no doubt still believe) that all the hatred against the U.S. was all George W. Bush’s fault, or if it wasn’t Bush, it was his dad, Reagan, Nixon or even Ike’s doing. And don’t expect them to learn any lessons from this, other than if Obama falls behind and loses to somehow come up with a Mitt Romney-Mulisim Brotherhood-al Qaida conspiracy scenario, similar to the George H.W. Bush supersonic jet flight to Iran in 1980 to work a deal out with the Ayatollah Khomeini to keep the hostages imprisoned so Reagan could defeat Cater.
He’s tried to balance his tough guy Drone War with a personal approach of acting all lovey-dovey, cuddly-wumpus with Islam.
The Puss N Boots strategy has run its course?
I, for one, am shocked. This is so…well, unexpected
We may be losing the War on Terror, but at least we have seized the momentum in the War on Food. The intel briefings that we skip on the rape and murder of our ambassadors can be completely understood by our uncovering the dastardly implications of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
We may not be able to ell if Egypt is an enemy or an ally, or even name the capital of Israel, but we damn sure can keep national security on the treadmill for a few more miles.
We have no capacity to stop the collapse of our economy, the erosion of private sector jobs, the need to print money in a Weimar frenzy, but we can most certainly invoke Colahibition, but Soda Speakeasies may pop up all over the nation, because this is a lawlessness nation after all.
The War on Food is in good hands.
As for the raging insanity on everything else, you’re on your own.
Over the past few days, you’ve heard Israel talk a lot about “red lines” being drawn for Iran’s nuclear program. How about we start drawing a few “red lines” for the Islamic world in general, rather than just Iran? How about we start warning countries all over the Middle East that the one thing that is non-negotiable is the safety of American lives and property in the Middle East? If you kill our citizens or burn our embassies, you can expect a quick and not too pleasant reaction from the United States. Expect our Marines in Libya to hunt down and KILL (not arrest, kill) those responsible for killing our diplomats and destroying our embassy. The Marines don’t even have to do the actual killing. They could simply work with CIA operatives in Libya and call in drone strikes against the tribes that supported the attack. Also make it clear that we have very, very, long memories. It doesn’t matter if it takes us 10 years to find you (as with bin Laden), but we WILL eventually find you and wreck your day.
At the turn of the 20th century and well into the 1930s, the primary importance of American gunboats in places like China, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Philippines, was the protection of American lives and property. Actually controlling a foreign government wasn’t nearly as important as making sure that American lives and property were not harmed or attacked in any way. If they were, you could expect a large gunboat off your shores with a demand that the bad behavior stop immediately and that restitution be made to the United States for any damage sustained by local mobs. If the local government failed to heed our demands, our gunboats opened fire on those countries. There are literally dozens of examples of American gunboats from 1900 to 1940 coming to the rescue of Americans in trouble in foreign lands, espcially in China and Central America.
Time to brush off “gunboat diplomacy” in the Middle East. Seems like the Islamic radicals have forgotten this lesson from the last century, a lesson that was perfected by the British and the Royal Navy, espcially in Egypt. Force is the only thing these people really respect and understand. Bowing to them and trying to make them be our “friends” is a bunch of Wilsonian nonsense and it makes us look pathetically weak.
We are never going to turn these places into models of Jeffersonian democracy. The best you can hope for is a Middle Eastern secular dictator, general, or monarch that is pro-western. That’s about as good as it gets in the Middle East. Mubarak may have been a dictator, but he certainly wasn’t any worse than what the Egyptians have right now and the economy was much better under Mubarak. Egypt under the Muslim Brotherhood is broke and is turning into an international pariah. With its economy near collapse and with the Muslim Brotherhood wanting to turn back the clock to the 13th century in Egypt, it’s no wonder few corporations want to invest in a place like that. Egypt NEEDS the west, and they know it.
It’s about time we started saying that we will refuse to trade with them, refuse to loan them any more money, and throw them out of the World Trade Organization and let them rot in the sun, UNLESS they start playing ball and protect American lives and property in their country. If we make our demands while in a position of strength, they will play ball. If they think we’re a declining power that has gone soft and is unwilling to militarily defend its own people, then we’re done in that part of the world. Oh, and by the way, do you know who also thought we were a paper tiger? Osama bin Laden. He held this belief and it encouraged him to attack the United States on 9/11. He may be dead now after a 10-year hunt, but never forget that he felt confident in killing almost 3,000 Americans because he thought we were weak and finished as a world power. Having the Muslim world believe you are weak never, ever, ends well and 9/11 proved that.
Speaking of bowing…imagine the cognitive dissonance that would be created by converting a certain religious capital into a hog farm.
All good points Mr. Green, but what do we do about their “descent from sanity” as I think you put it?
Here’s my take. The Islamic peoples are a bad mix with westerners. If you take away the one reason we have to have some sort of relationship with them, petroleum, why is there any further point in having any sort of human intercourse between us? They are mysognenistic in the extreme, sexually obtuse, intolerant of others, and believe in the supremacy of Sharia and the Caliphate. They marry their 1st cousins, for Pete’s sake!
We need to develope our own petroleum reserves, of which we have more than they, and systematically limit contact with these people. If we do that we will limit the oportunity for further toxicity.
The Islamic peoples believe only in their book, their law, and their system. None of that fits in any way with our federal and state constitutional forms of governance. They have no understanding of our ways and they contribute very little to a relationship with us. We need to quit fooling our selves that there is a benefit to cultural exchanges with these folks.
I say let them live as they choose. Limit their ability to get visas and green cards or otherwise establish further contact with us. The department of State should issue travel warnings regarding all Muslim nations because under Islam if you are a nonbeliever you’re scum. We should limit contact where ever possible.
Three final points:
1. Israel is culturally similar to us and shares our western tradition and values, we need to support them militarally and economically as a bulwark against the Islamists.
2. We need to stop nation building. Iraq was a disaster, as is Afghanistan. We have no business trying to change people into Jeffersonian republicans, they can’t handle it and have no foundational traditions associated with such decision making processes as we have here. It’s like teaching a damn pig to sing, its a huge waste of time and taxpayer money.
3. We need to simplify our defense. When we are attacked as we were in Benghazi, we need to hunt down the attackers who did it and kill them. That needs to be done swiftly and very violently. Afghanistan was a case in point, until we started occupation. That was a mistake.
In the future we should go in quickly and with very precise and overwhelming force commit extreme violence upon our attackers. We should then leave; no Marshall plan. A note left on a tree that says, ” Do it again and we will come back and finish the job.” should be sufficient to get our point across.
My bet is they will learn to leave us alone if we, in turn, leave them alone.
What do we do about it? It’s a cultural, organic problem. The solution will have to be cultural and organic, too. In other words: There’s damn little we can do. For us, the trick is to manage the level of violence directed at us. Which is pretty much what you’ve outlined there. Nice work.
We can do what the US and Royal navies did with extreme effectiveness in 1918: mine the waters of their coasts and enforce a strict blockade and reduce them to starvation. When the Germans started to starve in 1918 they tried a desperate final offensive in the hopes they could succeed before they starved to death, it didn’t succeed and its was hunger with the threat of a communist revolution that brought the Germans to the Armistice. The Arabs of today are nowhere near as capable and effective a military force the German’s were in 1918. And no country in the world is going to take on the US Navy just for the sake of the Arabs. Bring the Arabs to the edge of starvation to get their attention and then demand as the price of lifting the blockade they must kill all of the Salafist or they can starve to death. No one will lift a finger to help them because ultimately once the US decides to fight a total war no one can.
the US is the only people who buy their oil. If we don’t buy it, the rest of the world will, so if you want to stop into their income you’ve got to destroy their oil wells.
Basically the Arabs have had several decades to decide what they want to do with their windfall of oil wealth, and it looks like the decision has been made to use it for jihad against the rest of the world in the name of Islam. Destroy all their oil wells — and, yes, seize their bank accounts in the west — and that threat goes away. Middle eastern oil accounts for around 20% of the world’s oil supply, so the rest of the world could manage to carry on without it although it wouldn’t be any fun. In fact this would become one of the few conflicts where the home front really does suffer more — through lost jobs, waiting in line for gas, etc. — than the members of the armed forces. All that would have to be done, after getting the orders, is to push a few buttons.
I agree with most of your post, Samizdata, with the exception that IMHO “nation building” in Iraq could have been a success with more patience and resolve. My only other difference is in the way to respond to attacks on our embassies. I would have several Marine units each with sharpshooters and a SAW defending each embassy in the Middle East or any other Muslim country, and a few hundred thousand rounds of ammo stockpiled. When it looks as though an embassy is going to be over run, the Marines should have standing orders to cut loose with the SAW’s and mow down the attacking mobs until they either leave or are all dead.
I would leave hunting down the instigators until later.
Homeland Security, Social Security, EPA, DOE have already purchased couple of million rounds of hollow point ammunition. Maybe they plan to provide the ammo the Marines will need.
Minimum of four Mini-Guns with a quarter million rounds each at every embassy.
I disagree. Think Somalia. SAWs and mini-guns aren’t enough in a full-scale shitstorm of that magnitude, and another Mogadishu scenario is not beyond the realm of possibility.
I say just close our embassies in these countries, pull our personnel, stop sending them our hard-earned cash and leave them to their own devices.
You can’t tame a rabid dog with soothing words and treats. It will still have the disease.
So take the oilfields and terminals, relocate the population from that area and lease it to India for, oh, a hundred years…
Samizdat- You have hit the proverbial nail squarely on the head! Your solution is better and more humane than my “nuke ‘em.”
The Muslim and non-Muslim cultures are like “oil and water.” The two will never mix, and your permanent segregation and repatriation of US Muslims to their native lands is the only common sense and humane solution.
Otherwise, we should prepare for Armageddon.
Just one correction: Dar al-Islam does not mean house of peace (that would be Dar al-Salaam), but rather house of submission.
I second LibertyShip’s motion.
STOP ALL MUSLIM IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES. STOP THE BUILDING OF MOSQUES IN AMERICA. START DEPORTATION OF THE ENEMIES WITHIN.
How long have we been opining about the common-sense, rule-based, English Common Law responses to Islamic naughtiness? People were saying all the same things in 1979.
Get it through your heads. We as a nation are not going to respond in any reasonable way. We are going to muddle through with our usual mix of half-ass measures and appeasement until we are attacked on a scale that leaves no option but war. No matter who is elected President, this statement is true, because State Department behavior at the working level does not change based on whether a liberal or conservative is in the White House. It’s all liberal, all the time, and will stay that way. Romney can’t and won’t fire enough of them to make a difference.
Indeed. We’re going to put up with it, until the day comes when we lose a few cities. And, unfortunately, I expect that day to come before the end of the decade.
And when that dark day comes, Nice America is going to get folded up and put away, and Vengeful America will come out, and be far worse than the Left’s worst nightmares. If you don’t understand what I mean, may I suggest “The Jacksonian Tradition” by Walter Russell Mead (conveniently found at http://denbeste.nu/external/Mead01.html ), or in a more popular form, the novels of Tom Kratman. . .
A weak horse wears whatever saddle is thrown on its back.
Muslims know this, so I’m surprised that Obama doesn’t.
The entire Political Correctness cabal, which consists of Obama and his minions, the entire corrupt media complex, much of the Democratic party (or is that the Demagogic party?), progressives/socialists/etc/ad nausem functions exactly like the Islamic religion. Why do I say that? Because they both rely primarily on jihad and tayiqqa to accomplish their goals.
Most people know what jihad is, but most aren’t familiar with tayiqqa.
Take a moment and watch this, and see if I am right or wrong.

In addition to Taqiyya, there’s also Muruna, which means that as long as it’s to advance Jihad and/or Shari’ah, it’s OK to violate Shari’ah.
Kitsuen,
I will check that out, thanks for the information.
Do you think my theory makes any sense?

Bullets dipped in bacon grease. Start distributing them to all embassy personnel.
http://www.snopes.com/rumors/pershing.asp
Check this out, General “Black Jack” Pershing had it figured out!
Honestly the west just needs to quit sending food to these nations. Egypt cannot feed itself, and neither can any of
the other countries. Instead of leisure time to sit around stoking their hatred of the west they would be occupied trying to fill their bellies and plotting the overthrow of their own chubby well fed rulers.
Having to feed yourself is a basic human right and when you remove all incentive to exercise this right you remove all other rights like
property rights, commerce, self governance, the ethics of hard work, morality, common sense, and planning for the future ( will there be food tomorrow? Will it rain and spoil the crop?).
Free bread for the underclass is never a viable plan in the long run, ask the Romans.
Two points:
Interesting that there are “civilizations” that make up the world – Angloshere, Western Europe, Eastern Slavic, Latin American, Sub-Saharan African, Chinese and/or Asiatic…. etc etc. And of ALL those civilizations, every single one of them, only ONE, only ONE.. seems to repeatedly and unhesitatingly decide that foreign embassies are fair game for violent attack. Only one. All those other ones, some bitterly at odds for decades, yet NONE have EVER seen fit to attack embassies. Only Muslim fanatical cavemen. They’re the ONLY ones, upon planet earth.
And — if the Israelis are seriously inclined to attack Iran, wouldn’t this sort of be the time to do it? I mean, sure, the Muslim world will react – they might even take to the streets in irrational, drooling mobs or something, Allah forbid. Just a risk they would have to take, I suppose –
Thank God we have our best and brightest at the helm in these troubled waters.
A good start would be to keep them out of our countries. Won’t be too long before the riots are not in Benghazi, but in Amsterdam, New York and Berlin. You know, when the ‘peaceful majority’ suddenly decides to become less peaceful…
Why do they seem insane? Don’t discount the effect of thousands of years of “consanguineous” marriage, otherwise known as cousin marriage. What is fairly typical in Islamic (especially Arab) countries is illegal here. But they’re working to change that. Calling John Cassavetes.
In other word, a huge amount of them are inbred nutjobs. Geez. Ya think?
“what you mean ‘we’, white man?”
Willfully blind? not hardly.
They know exactly what they are about.
I’ve heard in the last 3 or 4 hours that our American embassy guards were either unarmed or had no ammunition for the firearms they were carrying. That policy was not put in place by the countries the embassies were in but by OUR ADMINISTRATION. Total, complete, despicable incompetence.
You know it seems odd he sent the Marine detail in to protect our embassy staff, but wouldn’t allow them to have bullets in their guns. Basically disarming the protectors, and not advising them of the imminent threat. Who is running the asylum? The seemingly obvious conclusion is that the administration wanted this to happen. A campaign distraction?
They didn’t have bullets in 1979 either.
Arabs will always back the strong horse against the weak horse. Unfortunately, we don’t even have a weak horse in the White House. We have a jackass.
According to a late breaking report in the Daily Rash, Joe Biden spoke at a Michigan mosque this morning dressed in a burqa. http://www.thedailyrash.com/joe-biden-speaks-at-michigan-mosque-wearing-a-burqa
If the Anointed One bends any further, he’ll be able to give himself a prostate exam, although, I’m not sure that under Obamacare that will be covered. John Kerry, Jimmeh Carter, Hillary, the vanguard of American foreign policy; that should scare the shit out of you. Well, at least we can rest easy with Joe Biden, the intellectual godshead of the democrat party. Empty chair, empty suit, empty gas tank, empty is the catchword of the democrat party.
Time for Obama go go off on another butt kissing tour!
mm mm MMM Barack Hussein Obama!
If JimmuhC had made the rubble in Tehran bounce for 40 days and 40 nights I ‘spect that there’d be a somewhat more peaceful environment in the east.
Western nations’ pursuit of ever more confined, targeted violence, more surgical precision, I think loses the point of war. The ultimate goal is to affect the will to act of your opponent. Incessant infliction of pinpricks taking out a money guy here, a bomb maker there has a tactical impact, of course, but it doesn’t shake the will of your opponent. In this shapeless sort of conflict your strategic target has to be the minds of the sea in which the fish swim. The general population must be sickened to the point that they turn on the fish attacking us from their midst.
The humanitarian efforts of the last century seem to have had the effect of removing the general population from having to suffer the consequences of the violence they support. They outsource the pain and suffering to their soldiers. Seems reminiscent of the Italian peninsula during the age of the mercenaries. The city states had no incentive to stop because the only harm came to hired guns and peasants, and who cares about either of those?
Sherman’s march to the sea was aimed directly at the civilian population’s support for their military. He stated explicitly that his goal was to cause the south to become so sick of the suffering and privation that they would demand a halt to the war.
We have the ability to expunge countries from the face of the earth. We are awarded no credit for not doing so and instead are insulted, taunted and villified by those we choose to try to treat ‘humanely’.
More and more I believe Mr Fernandez’ Three Conjectures may wind up being a best case scenario.
Never have the words of Major General Charles Napier of the British Army in India been so heedful:
“Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs.”
Our response should be, unequivocally: Be it so. This continual outrage is your custom. Burn our embassies, murder our ambassadors and citizens. But our nation also has a custom. When savages attack us, burn our sovereign property, and murder our citizens, we convert their countries to rubble. Our armies and fleets, air and sea, are ready. Our heretofore generous wallets are closed. Let us all act according to national customs.
The servile weakness of the Obama administration is repulsive and a disgrace to ALL American citizens.
May God have mercy on your souls if he gets 4 more years…
“Maybe We Should Have Bowed More”
And, maybe we should kick Muslim ass more.
“Could we have been any more unprepared? Could we have been any more willfully blind?”
You can be sure that as we write there is a White House Working Group assiduously looking into this. And by the Beard of the Prophet, if they figure out a way we could be more unprepared and blind, they will implement it.

To think or TRY to portray these MANY acts of violence in the M E ‘not being coordinated’ prior to this idiotic YouTube video is an insult to the lowest form of deductive reasoning.
Heck there’s information from ~ 1 week PRIOR to the Benghazi incident of possible terrorism action via intel!
Here’s some facts: The MANY MANY Crusades taking place the last ~1300 years has brought then-stalwart enemies of France, Germany and England to form a temporary alliance to combat fundamentalist Muslims inundating Europe. Wow.. the very same thing the ENTIRE Western civilization seems to be engaged in present-day. I sense a theme here of Islam but I digress.
Muslims DON’T build their religious monuments besides or elsewhere of Christian monuments. They’re built ON TOP of said Christian monuments.
Or Christian art is defaced, faces scratched off from murals, paintings, oil paintings etc.,
Check out the MANY Christian monuments, arts defaced following the Moors raping, pillaging.
From Malta to England this is EVIDENT in infinite-like sites.
The more fundamentalist Muslim’s embrace Islam the MORE they devolve.
The Middle East (M E) has the LEAST per capita #’s – colleges & universities WORLDWIDE. In essence, breeding stupid.
Name ONE, 1 contribution from the Muslim world the world has benefitted from the last 100 years. How about 500 years?
Sure you can say petroleum/ oil. However the M E supplies ~1/5th of the world’s oil as another commenter posted so that’s moot.
The Gaza Strip has received more aid than ANY nation the last 12-15 years. What’s been that area’s ‘progress’ in terms of building a society? NONE. Everything and anything in Gaza the troglodytes use there has ‘UN/ UNESCO’ stamped on it.. STILL!
TBH the M E has been a thorn in the world’s side for ~700 years and Europe for twice that amount of time.
The TRILLIONS of dollars spent for security worldwide to protect citizen’s and the propaganda to ‘pretend this isn’t in response to radical Islamists’ is again.. insulting.
Egypt’s recently elected new government passed 2 Bills whereas necrophilia is permitted for Muslim men within 12 hours of their wife passing away.
The 2nd Bill LOWERED the marrying age of Muslim females to 9 years of age! ‘Oddly’ the same age as 1 of Mohammed’s wives, ‘A’isha’.
Are these REALLY the best allies for the West’s seeking to continually improve interests?
It’s sickening to think the M E looong ago was thee place for philosophy, religious discussion and tolerance, engineering marvels, medical advancements etc.,
Today much of that part of the world is cave-man like. Troglodytes blissfully ignorant and believing we ALL should live as they do in ignorance, squalor and devolving.
A real shame though these cowardly acts should be exacted with swift and brutal force. NOT appeasing and groveling to these nomads the SoS Clinton, GWB and others have done recently, through the years.
In all analysis, estimates these ‘enemies’ can in most circumstances be dealt justice rather easily.
Yet politics, P C-like actions has proven to be our politician’s and kumbaya types modus operandi. Resulting not only the U.S. but the West’s death kneel.
“So the Drone War might now be even more important than ever. But so is the demonstration of American resolve and seriousness. And those are two things we won’t see without a change of leadership at the State Department, and without a change of address for the current occupant of the White House.”
Beyond “a change of leadership at the State Department”, a thorough cleaning out of the Mid-East Desk is also required.
