114 million Americans voted yesterday. 68% turnout. It was, as even many on the losing side admit, a good day for democracy.
But what does Eric “Spiders!” Alterman have to say about nearly 59 million of his fellow Americans? Read:
Slightly more than half of the citizens of this country simply do not care about what those of us in the “reality-based community” say or believe about anything.
You know what? He might just have that one right. Because I gave up caring about what Alterman thinks a long time ago.
Funny how it never occurs to Alterman to ask, “Gee, is it because I’m such an insufferable prick?”
I just posted this over at Jarvis’s and I believe it applies to Mr. Alterman perfectly.
I find it hysterically funny to listen to self-described urban sophisticates carp about the ignorance they deem prevalent in the red states.

Or even an overpaid network news reader.
Did it ever cross your minds that red state residents love where they are?
That they love their country likewise?
That many such as myself are grateful not to have to rub elbows with the likes of you on a regular basis?
The “reality-based community” – right, those are the folks that think Bush deliberately lied to the world about WMDs in Iraq, right?
All you need to know about Alterman is his comment about Kerry’s acceptance speech: “A triple with three men on.” The man is absolutely out of touch with anyone who does not live in the village.
They’re the ones who keep doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different outcome.
And they consider themselves realists. Funny.

What is this “reality-based” crap? It sounds, more than anything, like “Socialist Realism” of 70 years ago.
The “reality-based community” over at Washingtonmonthly is talking about Rove rigging the voting machines and Rove conspiring with Republican-appointed justices in Mass. to make gay rights a wedge issue.
Bizarre.
David’s comment above is similar to Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over agin and expecting a different result.
I’ve read in a couple places today where the first instinct of the “reality-based community”, i.e., the losers in an election, is to blame the candidate (the product) and then to blame the consumers (the voters). Yeah, that’ll have the punters knockin down your door Mr. Alterman.
I wonder, is this mentality a natural consequence of never having run a business?

I attend a very liberal private University in central Ohio, and today it was like someone died. The democrats were literally crying, crying, over Kerry’s loss. What’s more is that they just don’t or won’t beleive what the results tell them. Instead the turn their frustration into the most pure, vile hatred I have ever seen in my life. That is no exaggeration. Calls for assassinations, leaving the country and what not are all the norm. And now I have people who I used to call friends frankly telling me they hate me and my kind. It’s disturbing.
Or alternatively, “Yes, Eric, it is all my fault. And I’m getting good at it so get used to be on the wrong side of history.”
It’s always the same elitist nonsense from people like Alterman, who always think they know what’s best for us: The people made the wrong decision, they were duped, somebody cheated or didn’t play fair, bah, blah, blah.
It’s never their crappy candidates or an agenda they’ve been trying to shove down our throats for decades.
Maybe they can do it the EU way: Keep offering the same referenda until the people make the ‘right’ decision.
I thought the turn out was just under 60%.
Was it really 68%?
This is why liberals will continue to lose elections not to mention a fair amount of respect. Whatever the ills of society, it is the fault of others or the result of a society that does not see things as “we” do.
They are capable of zero introspection and I for one, hope they never change. What is reality based about digging a mental hole and crawling into it?
wow…sure didn’t take long for liberals to claim that they lost because middle america are homophobes. Some how “moral values” equates to being a homophobe?? Now anyone and everyone can debate what moral values are since it’s pretty ambigous, but i for one believe that “moral values”, are people that place emphisis on raising a family, working hard for you’re money, being honest, not victimizing people, and believing in something. Can moral-values mean defining marriage b/t a man a woman only…sure to some people (not to me though). But if moral-values were equivanlent to the gay marriage issue (that the left is now implying)..than Bush would’ve won with a 60-70% majority of the vote, as where our country (sadly) stands with the gay marriage issue. Liberals need to look deep down inside themselve’s to find out the reason why they lost. There’s is a party that victnimizes varies groups of people, there’s is a party that claims bigotry, relgious fanatics to anyone that disagrees with them, and so forth. I guess it wasn’t enough for liberals to claim that republicans are racists..but now we are homophobes…and it sadens me greatly to think in this day in age that people of a whole polical party can be labled as such. It’s time to grow up, and debate the issues without this pettiness

I agree with everything Eric said. Shame about that typo, Eric, I think you meant to type “alternate reality-based community”.
Hey, Mr. Alterman, consider this:
If I tell you and your “progressive” friends that Islam is being hijacked by a group of radical extremists out to destroy those who don’t embrace their ideology and that they must, unfortunately, be killed, you and your “reality-based” colleagues will call me a bigot with simplistic and reactionary views who is scaring the people.
But if I call 70 million Americans who opposed gay marriage and other “progessive” measures radical homophobic Christians who wish to destroy America, you and your friends will applaud my insight and enlightened views.
In other words, why do 70+ million Americans oppose you?

Since ’92, the Democrats have turned a superiority in the House and Senate into a smoking crater at an approximate rate of two or three seats a year. This time around, despite digging all the way to the bottom of their bag of dirty tricks and the unabashed and self-admitted whoring of MSM for the cause, they still lost- by over 1.5 million votes, in a high-turnout election (which are normally supposed to favor Democrats).
How many points have to be plotted before they see the trend? News for the “reality-based community”- AMERICA IS LEAVING THEM BEHIND, and has been for a while.
Alex, I know what you’re saying about being in the middle of an intolerant community. For all the blather about academic freedom, college and university campuses are some of the most bigoted, intolerant places in america.
Being on a university faculty almost guarantees possessing a pedestrian, unimaginative, and intolerant mind. A pity, that.
Consider it part of the gauntlet through which our promising young students must pass, as a trial. The good ones make it through, and the mediocre ones either become professors themselves, or become professional activists.
I have read a similar synopsis at the TPM website. It seems that many of the Dems just don’t understand what happened. They claim no mandate has been given to the president, in spite of the record number of votes, and the nearly unprecedented accomplishment of expanding the majorities in BOTH houses in EACH election. Fine, no mandate. But I suggest that they try to get some glasses to correct the myopia that pervades their outlook. Consider this: The Reps control roughly 30 states, and with a reasonably competent execution of strateg(r)y, they will achieve a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, and should easily maintain control of the House. As such, the Dems would be, literally, powerless to affect the course of the national legislature. As someone else noted, doing the same thing and expecting different results is insanity. It’s not the red states that are crazy. If the Dems persist in this “reality-based” view of America and the world, they’re in for a long hard winter of discontent, which they richly deserve.
He’s just mad because he can’t say “selected not elected” any more and have it be correct even by his tinfoil-beanie standards for reality.
It’ll be interesting to see how The King of The Sore Losers deals with this over the next few weeks–I may buy some popcorn and sit down to watch.

Perhaps Mr. Alterman should try “to get” what over half the country is saying. Maybe he should try to understand us, not demand that we understand him (perhaps we do understand him, better than he knows.) That would be the correct thing to do, in the spirit of tolerance and multi-culturalism, wouldn’t it?

It’s not so much a reality-based community as a community-based reality. They’ve made up their minds what to believe and they’ll be damned if they’ll let the real world intrude!
Eric Alterman and reality? That does not compute. He wouldn’t know reality if it came up and bit him on his rump.
Most of us think that WE are in the reality-based world and you aren’t Eric. That is why hearing the same folks who have been frothing at the mouth for the last 4 years suddenly claim to be “reality-based” just pegs the irony meter in the red zone. Not to mention it provides a heck of a laugh.
Taste of Reality for Alterman:

We stand against George Soros, Michael Moore, Tom Daschle, Liberal Media, ACT, MoveOn, Terrorists, Arab leaders, Europeans who don’t get it, and the liberal trash who have been bashing President Bush for four years.
We took a stand. America can do big things and not back down. We stand for the Declaration of Independence and understand that the ideals of freedom expressed within the document are universal to all humans.
We will create a democracy in Iraq. Neighbor nations will follow suit because humans desire freedom. We reject your notion that they would choose freedom for themselves if they wanted it. In this day and age of advanced weapons, the wealthy dictators control the oppressed masses. The Middle East is ripe for freedom because the channels of free expression are open – they know what they don’t have. They are tired of their oppressive leaders. Standing for freedom, we understand that free nations will not be a danger to other free nations. We know the cost will be great – but it is a worthy cause. We don’t understand how you would not embrace such goals, preferring to ignore facts and logic, retorting with clever prose, hoping to convey some intellectual superiority – as though it would somehow secure freedom where it doesn’t exist. Freedom is never free. Lack of freedom is deadly.
We took a stand for America and the world. We voted. We didn’t need Bruce Springsteen to tell us to vote. We didn’t need Puff Daddy telling us to vote or die. We didn’t go scrounging to get the most easily manipulated of our citizens to vote for our party. We weren’t impressed with George Soros’ millions – he is clueless when it comes to American ideals. We were disgusted by Moore’s Fahrenheit 911. We thought Dan Rather was blatantly biased and utterly foolish. We knew the Swift Boat Vets were honorable and spoke the truth. We would not insult our troops by electing a president who voted for the $87 billion before he voted against it during a time of war. We removed the senate minority leader because he was devisive. We were not fooled by the liberal hatred. We knew it was impossible to get UN support when the members were corrupt. We don’t care what the rest of the world thinks about our election. It’s our election, not theirs. Our faith in America is not only restored – it is renewed.
We voted for George W. Bush. Now the world knows where we stand.
