Jay Manifold does the math, and figures that a twenty-year occupation/restructuring of Iraq will cost a small fraction of our similar effort in West Germany.
Of course, there’s only one real way to check Jay’s figures…

And don’t forget we can use their oil proceeds to pay for it.
Hmmm… for that matter, we can use the rest of that money to pay for re-occupying Germany and France, who appear to need it again.

Maybe *that’s* their secret plan–pissing us off enough to invade them, occupy them, and rebuild their economies.
Very clever on their parts (if not terribly original), if that’s it, and completely safe, since unlike the heroes of “The Mouse That Roared”, there’s no chance in hell the Germans or French could win. . .:-)

They’d have to attack someone we cared about.
Restarting France/Germany squabbles isn’t going to work this time.
The Iraqi occupation cost estimates should factor in the costs of NOT occupying it – i.e. the terrorism, etc. that would continue to occur if Saddam is left alone.
