Jokeera Morgan called authorities and told them that she murdered her 8-month old and 18 month-0ld daughters. Paramedics took the young girls to Memorial University Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. Her other two children were not at home at the time.

Savannah-Chatham police spokesperson Eunicia Baker told the media that the police and the Division of Family and Children Services are looking into the deaths. Baker could not comment on whether Morgan had an attorney.

Neighbors reacted to the girls’ deaths with a mixture of shock and sorrow. A group of local residents held a vigil near the home on Tuesday night. One of them was Shawntray Grant, who led the mourners in a song.

“Ever since (earlier today) my heart has been filled with tears,” Grant said. “We definitely had to make an approach to come out here today. Because it wasn’t a shooting, we didn’t come out with signs or anything. The reason we do and a lot of different organizations come together is because I feel like it’s going to take unity to change this community. If we all fight together, it’ll come together more quickly.”
