The Obama administration’s public line on the shutdown fight has been that it deplores the politics, it wants to put federal employees back to work, that it’s all the fault of the Republicans and their rigid ideologues like Ted Cruz.

But behind the scenes, they’re singing a different tune.

Said a senior administration official: “We are winning…It doesn’t really matter to us” how long the shutdown lasts “because what matters is the end result.”

That quote backs up another from a National Park Service ranger, who has been tasked with keeping war veterans off the open-air, normally unmanned World War II Memorial in Washington:

The Park Service appears to be closing streets on mere whim and caprice. The rangers even closed the parking lot at Mount Vernon, where the plantation home of George Washington is a favorite tourist destination. That was after they barred the new World War II Memorial on the Mall to veterans of World War II. But the government does not own Mount Vernon; it is privately owned by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. The ladies bought it years ago to preserve it as a national memorial. The feds closed access to the parking lots this week, even though the lots are jointly owned with the Mount Vernon ladies. The rangers are from the government, and they’re only here to help.

“It’s a cheap way to deal with the situation,” an angry Park Service ranger in Washington says of the harassment. “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”

You can see the strategic thinking in the first quote, and the real-world effects in the second. This administration wants to maximize the pain, and doesn’t care — literally — if kids with cancer have to go without treatments. They’re in Obamacare uber alles mode, with the president even trying to tank the stock market to get his way. Breitbart reports that there are shenanigans going on with the Border Patrol, too.

Barack Obama is famously unenamoured of the Constitution because it limits government’s power. He has repeatedly joked/warned that he can’t really do all that he wants to do because the system restrains him. Obama has flexed his lawlessness before and gotten away with it. The closures of privately-run and funded parks on federal lands is probably illegal, so he may be breaking the law right now. It’s a legitimate question to ask what won’t Obama do to get his way?

We may be about to find out. The debt ceiling fight hasn’t even begun yet. Speaker Boehner signaled today that he will not allow a default, but Obama in his stock market comments signaled that he might allow one, blame it on the Republicans, and hope for an economic crash to ensue.

I've seen this movie before!

Arrogant, conceited and narcissistic tyrant turns on his own people. Things get very bad as the civil service and the police/army make life living hell for everyone. National services are shuttered, pension checks withheld, emergency rooms refuse to treat patients, grocery store shelves empty...

For most of the middle of the movie we see vignettes of the suffering. A man turned away from his city park by a snarling cop. A young mother denied formula for her baby by a sneering social worker. An elderly couple turned away from the social security office penniless by an arrogant government drone. Young kids diving dumpsters for food as government garbage collectors look on snickering.

Within days/weeks it looks like the country is locked down as secure as a cell block and the citizenry taught their lesson. No one will ever complain about dear leader ever again or deny his slightest whim.

Then one day, when what remaining vestige of liberty seems all but totally lost, in a small skirmish line in the middle of Main Street, Anytown, the impossible happens. Confronted by a young mother and her infant staring back in silent pathos, an equally young cop/soldier turns his back to the crowd of fellow citizens and points his rifle at the presidential palace instead. He is immediately grabbed by the military/secret police and hustled to the closest stockade to be shot on the spot. In full Quentin Tarantino technicolor detail.

The next day a dozen more young cops/soldiers turn their backs to their fellow citizens and march forward with them. The next day the entire police force and army join the crowd of disarmed citizens to encircle the presidential palace. Everyone is yelling and screaming for retribution.

Eventually, dear leader/tyrant appears on the balcony to jeers, taunts and shouts of ...

Well... you know how this sort of movie usually ends. Not good for dear leader/tyrant and all his sycophants.

The Obama creed: Never let a crisis go to waste. And if you haven't got a crisis, create one.

Suppose Obama and his minions, while initially thinking the Republicans would fold as they always do, have now come to accept that they are actually serious and may stick it out to the end in the belief Obama will eventually compromise.

But what if Obama has made the calculation he'd rather ride it out to the end and crash the system in order to have a free hand in rebuilding it as a socialist state?

In other words, he'll never compromise as he sees a chance to leap frog the incremental approach if he can force things to degenerate until he thinks there will be a popular outcry to give him more authority and free reign to act as he pleases to address the "emergency".

I support the shutdown as a reckoning had to happen sooner or later - but there HAS to be a strategy in place in case this hypothetical is accurate.

What is the Republicans counter in case Obama DOES want to crash the system?

Crises are the mother of intervention.

Obama loves this stuff - this is how you manipulate and leverage public opinion to operate with Executive powers outside those provided for in the Constitution. He does have audacity. And few Republicans do.

over 5 years later I repeat myself, the little halfwit kenyan has, since day one, done and will continue to do everything he can to destroy everything America stands for, while trying to act (poorly) like he is just doing what the people want. (also predicted) towards the end of his illegal reign he will do things that will eventually give him an excuse to declare martial law. don't forget, he has signed many e.o.'s that give him dictatorial powers once he does. he cannot, he will not step down, release his hold on that power, and thus be unable to fulfill his appointed mission (our destruction). he took an oath of office and intended all along to do the opposite of what the oath required. not really surprising considering his lack of proper credentials. if he ever gets our guns, you will see then what these monsters can do to a lackadaisical people.

we are now entering that latter stage of our complete change/takeover (as promised), and thus now get to see his real persona, and that of his followers, revealed. 'its disgusting' is a good description for this whole cowardly cabal of childish clowns.

Ah, yes, the ends justify the means. A familiar "liberal" refrain.
