On Wednesday, the Tatler broke the story of the National Park Service’s closing of the Claude Moore Colonial Farm. The farm, which re-creates American life circa 1771, has been self-sufficient since the federal government slashed its funds in 1980. It receives no federal funds.

But, for the first time ever, the National Park Service ordered the park closed and placed barricades at its facilities. It has also threatened anyone who enters the park with arrest.

In an update on the farm’s plight, Managing Director Anna Eberly says that the farm has been “critical of the National Park Service because we think they have closed us down illegally according to the terms of the agreement we signed with them in 1981.” Eberly says that the farm’s agreement with the NPS states that the park service is only asked to provide police protection when necessary, and has no authority to close the park down. Eberly notes that the farm has elected to call in local law enforcement from Fairfax County, not the NPS, when police are needed. She also notes that because the farm is located very near the CIA, everyone feels quite safe on its grounds.

Eberly says, “The staff has been here [at the farm] all week in spite of being threatened with arrest because we feel our cause is just and the farm is worth protecting.” She says that many of the farm’s volunteers are federal employees who could be using their idle time now to help out, but the NPS is standing in the way and keeping them out.

The Claude Moore Colonial Farm has already had to cancel all of its events at a loss of roughly $15,000. As the farm depends entirely on itself for survival, there is a growing likelihood that it may not survive the National Park Service’s decision to close it. The farm remained open during every single previous government spending standoff.

Eberly says that so far, the National Park Service is not even responding to her queries about the barricades. The silence does not seem to be an effect of a lack of personnel due to the shutdown, because the NPS has been very busy deploying barricades and shutting down self-sufficient parks all over the country.

Restaurant in San Francisco, accessible by public streets but sitting on a bluff with a great view, was forced to close because they pay rent and sit on federal land.

So a very successful restaurant is being forced to close by B.O. and his ilk that want to punish the workers in this restaurant who have been told to go home.

But no problem to Harry Reid, what does he care about those people.

Privately run parks are being punished because they are the enemy. Obama doesn't want any private enterprise that is not beholden to the government. Private enterprise is also not run and staffed by government employee unions. Another reason why they are the enemy and need to be punished.

We are planning a gathering this weekend in Lexington and Concord at the national park that the administration has shut to score political points. Please help us to get the word out.

Where: Minute Man National Historic Park

When: Sunday October 6th at noon

Why: they have closed this heritage site to the public because of the government shutdown.....we will see about that!

Please get the word out!

Sincerely,

Paul Revere

Why stop with a farm or a restaurant? Let's shut down access to the OCEAN!

What is beginning to really freaking bother me is that no one is protesting, no one is resigning. The entire apparatus of Federal government is bowing and saying 'hai' when Chocolate Nixon tells them to go out and punish his enemies by assaulting the helpless.

We have a many-tentacled monster in our midst.

What next, national forests? We are right in the middle of hunting season. Imagine the forest service trying to tell a quarter of a million armed big game hunters that they can't hunt on public property. Right about then is when the shooting will start.

Perhaps we need a bit more civil disobedience...it seems like President Asterisk's picture should be all over the BarryCades. Let's give credit where credit is due. :-)

They justify these outrages in the interest of saving money during the shutdown, but far more money is being spent renting and erecting barricades, and sending hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

The whining of the privileged has been a real preview into how difficult is will be to get ANYBODY to give up ANY benefits. I don't recall a "right to unfettered access to public parks" in the Bill of Rights.

Parks are commons. By definition, the people have the right to access.

Chris Christie took over a bankrupt New Jersey from the criminal Corzine, who told him just keep things the way they are.

Christie cut all sorts of boards where members how up a few times a year and collect 5 & 6 figure salaries for their civic mindedness. He cut those boards which did not add any benefit to the citizens except to those given the patronage.

Now if Christie would have gone full Democrat he would have cut police, fire or similar items first.

I take it, you are old school and would much rather continue patronage than anything else.

As I predicted, Obama is out to bring the most possible pain, not to manage the shutdown with reason and compassion as was done under Reagan and Clinton. Shutdowns in the past were rightly viewed as failures of the political system that no one was happy about. The differences were argued ardently on both sides, but they didn't try to abuse citizens for political gain like Obama is.

As long as Obama and Reid believe their positions are helping them politically, they have no incentive to budge. It's not about being right, the American people were stupid enough to elect this clown twice, don't expect too much of them.

"It's not about being right, the American people were stupid enough to elect this clown twice, don't expect too much of them."

Amen! I dunno who's doing the polling for the respective sides, but let us pray that the Republican pollsters are not as far off base as they were in the election last year. I can report from here that the local press can scarcely tear itself away from the multitude of "pitiful" stories about gov't workers in unemployment lines and angry park visitors. It's exactly what happened last time. It's like the media and the public didn't learn a darn thing from the lamentably bad performance of the media in 1995-6.

Both George Snuffaluffagus and Dick Morris have said publicly that Slick Willie was on the verge of folding to pressure from Congressional Democrats when the Republicans inexplicably threw in their cards. Is that the lesson you refer to?

THE WHITE HOUSE IS ORCHESTRATING A CAREFULLY PLANNED ATTACK ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
People are being prevented from visiting the open-air Lincoln Memorial, WWII Memorial, etc. Americans, who made reservations months ago at privately run campgrounds in national parks, are having their hard-earned vacations destroyed. This was planned way in advance because the WH was looking for a fight in can blame on the 'Stupid Party'. Our Nobel Peace Prize President is all about Class Warfare, political warfare and vilifying anyone and everyone who doesn't agree with him. His 'leadership' style is to create a crises in order to get whatever he wants.

Go to www.1771.org to make a donation to this farm. I just did. Even if it's .50, $1, whatever, it will add up!

Well, if it didn't get federal money before, obviously money is not the issue and private donations won't reopen the park as long as the NPS is doing what it is told by the administration. Bret Baier's show reported that the NPS had roped off the Mall, which isn't gated to begin with - it's like they suddenly decided to close Constitution Ave to make the point. Why? It's open to public and traffic. All they are doing is making things as visible as possible when 99.5% of the time, we don't notice the activities of either the government workers or government agencies. My only conclusion is the administration was suddenly faced with a repeat of the sequester phenomenon: i.e., without a big demonstration from unions and media to point out what is not getting done, nobody would notice, just like the sky failed to fall when the sequester hit. The only agency really suffering from sequestration is DoD.

Ever wonder what it would be like if there was such a thing as reincarnation and Adolf Hitler was reincarnated as an American and grew up to be America’s President? Well now you know.
