Uncle Thomas?” That’s where we are in the 21st century?

A Democratic lawmaker from Minnesota criticized Tuesday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act by calling Justice Clarence Thomas “Uncle Thomas,” then saying he didn’t know “Uncle Tom” was a racist epithet.

On his Twitter account Tuesday, state Rep. Ryan Winkler called the justices’ 5-4 ruling striking down a part of the law racist, and the work of “four accomplices to race discrimination and one Uncle Thomas.” Justice Thomas, who is black, was one of the five justices in the majority.

That tweet was quickly deleted, and Mr. Winkler, who is white and represents some upper middle class suburbs west-southwest of Minneapolis, offered a conditional-tense quasi-apology in subsequent tweets.

If Paula Deen should lose her livelihood over racial slurs, then racist Rep. Ryan Winkler should resign and his Democrat party should denounce him immediately.

Update: Rep. Winkler is claiming that he didn’t know “Uncle Thomas” is a racist term. Even though it’s derived from the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and he has a degree from Harvard.

If it’s really true that Winkler doesn’t know the history of “Uncle Tom,” then why did he deploy it against the only black justice who voted to strike down part of the Voting Rights Act, and among other things, what does it say about the quality of a Harvard education?

It's not racist if a lily white Democrat uses a derogatory term against a conservative, especially a conservative whose parents were both black, a conservative who didn't like to stay in the Affirmative Action plantation in which a 100% white woman with high cheek bones was more valued than a not-so-white minority. The lily white Democrat would be more respectful if said black person had a white parent, and is "clean", "articulate" and "don't speak negro".

Oh, give me a break. This idiot man knows damned well that Uncle Tom is a racial epithet. But, because he is a man of the Left and blacks give passes to Lefties that offend conservative blacks, he'll get to live another day.

Except, if you're a southerner then you get no such exemption, even if you happen to be a major bundler for Barack Obama in the 2008 campaign.

I thought the term "Uncle Tom" was only offensive if uttered by one black person to another; it effectively labels the person a sellout to his race. The sting in the remark comes about because the person being labelled is labelled by someone from the same group.

What white person would call a black person a sellout if the black person co-operated with the wishes of the white person?

This hypersensitivity of offense isn't just annoying, it's irrational.

Don't be stupid, a racist, black or white, always labels a black person who refuses to take advantage of Affirmative Actions Uncle Tom. You know, acting white, the uppity black person acts as if he's as good as the white people that he doesn't need extra handouts.

I wouldn't consider a black person who thinks there as good as or doesn't need "extra handouts" an Uncle Tom. I honestly don't think that's the meaning of the slur.
