Extremely sad and disappointing news from Cambridge University.

JERUSALEM: Stephen Hawking has pulled out of a high-profile conference to be held in Jerusalem in June to support an academic boycott of Israel, conference organisers and the university said on Wednesday.

The academic and cultural boycott, organised by international activists to protest against Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians, is a heated and contentious issue; having the renowned physicist and cosmologist join it is likely to help the anti-Israel campaigners significantly.

“Never has a scientist of this stature boycotted Israel,” said Yigal Palmor, the spokesman for Israel’s Foreign Ministry.

Organisers of the fifth annual Israeli Presidential Conference, held under the auspices of President Shimon Peres, said they had received a letter over the weekend from Professor Hawking announcing his decision.

Cambridge University issued a statement indicating that Professor Hawking had told the Israelis he would not be attending “based on advice from Palestinian academics that he should respect the boycott”, Associated Press reported.

Looks like Hawking can’t sort good advice from bad. The boycott is aimed, ultimately, at killing academic freedom.

If ever it happens that someone comes up with a cure for Hawking's physical malady, it is about a thousnd times more likely to be a Jew than a an Arab.

Steven Hawkins was never "great!" His "Black-Hole" mantra was so full of holes swiss cheese looked whole. He was debunked as a gadfly...BY HIS PEERS! Lately, he's been working on a better mouse-trap.
As for standing with Palestinians, merely attests to advanced stages of his illness. Once again, predatory Hezbollah pressuring an ill, seriously impaired American scientist to subscribe and represent their claim to territory in Middle Eastern continents, unfounded and undocumented...just folly, a la Arafat. Gee, who wouldda thunk, an American scientist an ally of Arafat's PLO and Hezbollah??? New dawning of America. Must be the water! Pray. Amen.

Hawking is British. Your points still make sense.

It's sad, but on many issues even Einstein wasn't much of an "Einstein." Hawking has advanced our understanding of physics more than Einstein did, but is just as clueless about humanity.

Hawkins is no different than any other run of the mill celebrity using their fame to promote a misguided leftist worldview. Would Hawkins' mind and crippled body have find the same level of appreciation in any Islamic country that he apparently holds for the country that developed the very technology that allows him to spew his "brillance"?

Further proof that an amazing degree of achievement in a specialized field of study does NOT translate into broader knowledge about the world... or basic decency.

He made his decision known via his speaking machine, which is based on Intel technology developed in Israel.

An oddball thing to do. If there were a conference in Cairo, would Hawking attend because the Egyptians had forced out Jews longs ago and so it was no longer an "issue?" No matter how one stands on Israel, doesn't Hawking understand he's talking about people who've been fighting for their very lives from Europe to the British Mandate for no greater crime than being Jewish?

Who created that situation? Jews? Have any Europeans been fighting for their very existence? Have the "Palestinians," Syrians, Jordanians, Egyptians? This guy should get a grip. Successfully avoiding genocide is not an international crime. Ignoring the fact Israel's neighbors tried to put Mandate Jews in bondage even though it was not their territory is a crime. Where's all this energy now that Syrians are in trouble? Nada. No Jews to blame.

Prof Hawking has informed us that the Universe doesn't need God. I think he has it backwards.
