Politicians like Barack Obama and Andrew Cuomo wanted to use the shock of Newtown to force strict new gun laws through and onto the books. Obama so far has failed, the law he wants has been stripped of the “assault” weapons ban. The remaining package now faces a filibuster. Cuomo succeeded, only to look like a fool when his shiny new law made criminals out of cops. Parts of that law may be vacated indefinitely. The whole thing should be scrapped. It was passed before most legislators had ever even had the chance to read it. Open government died in New York with the passage of that law.
Now the passions that the politicians cynically wanted to use are passing like a vapor.
Soon after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., announced an assault weapons ban would not be part of a gun control bill, a new CBS News poll shows support for stricter gun control laws overall has dropped since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Currently, support for stricter gun control laws stands at 47 percent today, down from a high of 57 percent just after the shootings. Thirty-nine percent want those laws kept as they are, and another 11 percent want them made less strict.
Thank God for the Second Amendment and the founders who wrote it.
Politicians definitely need a waiting period before passing laws. Many of them are egomaniacs who let their passions get ahead of their heads, and many of them are also psychopaths who use tragedy to stir up fear and then govern by the fear they help create.
