How again is this a political win for the Democrats?
June 28, 2012 - 9:21 am
Now that the shock has worn off, let’s think about this.
President Obama is now the owner of the biggest tax hike in history, he wields the most powerful IRS in history, has effectively been called a liar by the Supreme Court, and the Commerce Clause finally hit a wall future congresses will find it difficult to scale.

Well, Roberts did give them a roadmap any time they need to get around that wall.
Agreed that Roberts did just slap a major roadblock on future “Commerce Clause” justifications for unlimited Congressional actions. Wickford, Raich et al have just been put on notice that they are as far as this train goes!
Yeah and that map leads one to a political cliff. Commerce clause issues excite a few law bloggers. Tax increases tick off millions of voters.
What I’d like to hear from the Left is how they feel about it being ruled constitutional to compel the purchase of a product from a corporation in light of the Citizens United decision, which is alleged to allow corporations to effectively purchase election results and therefore purchase legislators (not my personal view on CU).
You’ll never get that answer. Seeking principles or logical consistency on the Left is a fool’s errand.
Thanks for the pick me up Steve but do you have any vodka to throw my way because I am still thoroughly depressed.
“How is this a win for the Dems?”
I’ll accept the mission: First, you say the mandate is the biggest tax increase in history. But remember that very few of Obozo’s supporters pay any tax now, and won’t pay any tax after the mandate kicks in, either. So the Dems don’t get any negative PR from this group.
Second: Dems from red states who voted for this abomination would have faced a bigger backlash had it been found unconstitutional. As things stand now, though, they look pretty good, and they’ve got a great bandwagon issue with their constituents.
Finally, the decision proves that even when the court is faced with the most obvious, egregious case of violation of the Constitution, it prefers to pass on making the hard decisions that would support and defend the Constitution. Don’t think the next Dem pres hasn’t already gotten that message.
Thank you Vodkapundit. As Slate.com stated, Obama may have won the battle. But Roberts won the war, and this coming from a nutty progressive website.
How is this a win for the Dems?
Because they FINALLY overthrew that pesky Constitution thing. The Government can now compel you to do ANYTHING – at all! – Simply by taxing you into oblivion for non-compliance. As Instapundit put it “The Constitution ends where the tax code begins.” And now, we’ve determine that the tax code can apply to anything.
Congrats Dems, you got rid of elections through wide-spread voter fraud, you destroyed any chance of an educated electorate through the destruction of the school system, and your nearly complete control of the media outlets coupled with the elimination of any Constitutional checks on government power – You’ve got what you want!
I look forward to learning what my new career will be from the Supreme Soviet, er, I mean DNC when they determine how I can best provide ‘from my abilities’…

As usual, Stephen, you’re right on the money! It merely means that the battle lines are getting clearer, which is all to our advantage.
My wife and I were discussing it all over breakfast, and we couldn’t see, despite all the blather, that any single thing would change whichever way the ruling went.
If that @$&^%#er gets elected again, move to Antarctica, if you must.
But I don’t think it likely, without massive fraud. If there is massive fraud, even suspected strongly, the weather calls for raining lead, and it won’t be pretty.
Then, we’ll see.
And we can tax abortion now! Let’s put all abortion clinics out of business by imposing an excise tax on abortion of, say, $100,000.
You’re right, Steve. But let’s hope more beyond the “choir” care.
It seems to me that about half the country just doesn’t care what The O does or what becomes of our nation.
