The Palace Guards over at MediaMatters are taking nasty swipes at me this morning — “Right-Wing Media’s Latest Embarrassment: Obama Lied About Birthplace to Get Ahead.“ I suppose that’s to be expected when Rush Limbaugh quotes your article (“The Mystery of the Kenyan Birth“) on his show.
What’s amusing is that the MM crew takes at face value the assertion by Obama’s agents that the “born in Kenya” statement at the top of Barack’s biography was just a 1991 mistake that for some reason went unnoticed until 2007, although numerous other entries in the same pamphlet had been updated. (The literary agency, Acton & Dystel, has explained that the “born in Kenya” line “was nothing more than a fact checking error.”)
Hello? Are you kidding? In my informal poll of several authors of numerous books in the last day or two, not a single one of them had ever heard of such a thing or could have imagined it. It certainly wasn’t remotely my experience, as the author of eleven books. We all remembered our first books and what close (almost obsessive) attention we paid to the publicity, whether from agents or publishers. The idea that we – or Obama of all people — would have missed our country of birth in the opening paragraph of some bio is risible.
Never mind. MM will believe what it wants to believe. But speaking of fact checking, I wouldn’t mind if they referred to us as PJ Media, not PJ Media as they did at the link. The name has been changed for several months. If they do, I promise to refer to them as MediaMatters, not MishMash.

An interesting note on this is that the press is (for once) uniquely qualified on this subject. If a journalist has been in the business even for a little while, they know what process is followed regarding author bios.
That makes it all the more fun to watch the press try to spin this away. Tom Lipscomb was spot on when he wrote “Give Dystel & Goderich the Rose Mary Woods Memorial Award” It is completely absurd to try and explain this as a fact checking error. Their own internal forms now over at Breitbart show it to be an absurd lie.
Maybe they did check with the author: in this case, that would have been Bill Ayers!

How does one make a “fact checking error” on an author’s place of birth?
With all those editors and fact checkers (they may wish to consult the origins of Pajamas Media…then “fact check” the name of the site they cite and its current name), isn’t the point that “fact checking” is the whole selling point of the “big boys”?
Again, how does one make a “fact checking” error on the birthplace of the author? Wouldn’t you be given a biography sheet with name, date of birth, place of birth, schools attended…whatever?
Wouldn’t that sheet contain the AUTHOR’S responses?
Wouldn’t this be on perhaps a hundred documents filled out for a hundred different applications and “histories” taken? Hospital records, school records, job applications, …whenever you fill out a long form of your personal history.
How in the world would that lead to a “fact checking” error? It states what it states.
Now, one might believe that the paternal grandmother’s statement that he was born on a Luo village was due to a “translation error”. And someone might say that he was able to fly to restricted cities on a passport that had him listed as a citizen of Indonesia or that his social security card was issued in a state where he never resided a single day because …well, I don’t know.
But none of those would be “fact checking” errors. They would be facts that were inconsistent with normal procedure and worthy of investigation (without forging documents like CBS or intentionally editing out material evidence like NBC or without fuzzying up pictures like ABC or without reddening anyone’s eyes in a photoshopping act like Newsweek or without holding material information hostage like the LA Times.)
It’s interesting that the Washington Post (WaPoo) wishes to go back to the high school days of Mitt Romney to dredge up an event that may not have ever taken place, but won’t lift a finger to look at the mountain of mysterious events surrounding the guy that the JournOListas conspired to commit a coverup for and to promote through puffery and overt acts of near criminal behavior.
All those editors and fact checkers…and they edit out material evidence with malice aforethought and they don’t seem to have this fact checking thing down at all.
I’m shocked, shocked I tell you. Well slap my wrist and call me a Cherokee, they now want to smear Roger. Just like the Obama economy, this is all so…unexpected.
The only possible innocent explanation that I can think of is that someone screwed up when getting Obama’s bio and “miscribed” (is that a word?) his father’s place of birth with his. I could actually see that happening.
But the fact that it was never fixed until Obama became a national figure and declared himself a candidate … even that’s stretches credulity too far for me. Which was already stretched paper-thin to begin with.
And I’ve known enough authors to support Roger’s contention about the anal-retentive nature of the clan wrt publicity details, etc. Something like this simply wouldn’t pass muster.

Let us try to be the fact checker in this incident for just one minute. You are that checker sitting at your desk one day and the boss comes in and says that Obama did not send in his bio page and that we have to do it for him. I know, I know, ALL of the other writers hand in their bios. So what do you do to find out his bio? Pick up the phone and call him? Write him a letter? Do a Lexus nexus search on him to see if there is one already? Drop by his apartment and see him in person. Remember at that time he was a nobody and would have been very reachable. But are we to believe that this checker working for a very persnickety
owner would just make up this important document that would go to press and then be handed out to thousands of people? Would you have made up such a document? There is no way in hell anyone whose job depends on accuracy would do such a stupid job killing thing. The publisher is lying big time and covering Obama’s ass.
It’s as much a fact checking error as it is to refer to Obama as black rather than bi-racial but Zimmerman as white Hispanic rather than bi-racial or Warren as a plains Indian. It’s purposeful, because this is how the Dem Party doles out morality and a sense of justice. It’s really every bit as disgusting as the old system of color-code apartheid in South Africa. Obama tried to cash in on the caché of not just being bi-racial, not being just black, but an authentic real live here in your home African.

When I was growing up, 1950′s and 1960′s, the white population (read that: Western civilization), was 87% here in the US.

I’ve been thinking about this “Kenya” thing. Let’s entertain the thought that Our President was, in fact, born in Kenya, and not in Hawaii (specifically on Catalina Island). The obvious anwswer is “so what?” What does it matter? I know that the constitution says something about the president having to be born in the US. But, as Justice Ginsburg so astutely observed recently, our constitution is outdated. Justice Ginsburg stated that if she were to draft a modern constitution, she would use the South African constitution as a model. South Africa’s constitution is of REAL modern significance. It guarantees free health care, a job to all, people-sponsored social security, and a free malt liquor to all citizens. And, as I am sure most of you have figured out, South Africa is a lot closer to Kenya than the US is! In fact, the two nations are only separated by Guatemala. So really, what’s all the hub-bub about…bub?

questions: 1. How did she originally determine that Kenya was a possible
birthplace for Obama? She presumably didn’t come up with Kenya
out of thin air. Someone had to point her in that direction.

2. Who did she check with? The proper agencies in Kenya? What did
they tell her? Did the Kenyan authorities verify Obama’s date

Having just spent an hour of so reading the posts at Media Matters regarding this story, I saw multiple repetition of the standard accusations made against Republicans and Conservatives about being racist, stupid, ignorant, etc, etc. I read their guttural criticism of the speculations of those in the media on the Right of why Obama would overlook or allow the publication of the false “Kenya” birth to continue into 2005 or 2007. What I did not see was any attempt to postulate alternative rationally supportable explanations of why Obama allowed it to be published in the first place and why it continued for so many years. The total lack of curiosity expressed by those posting over there at Media Matters regarding how and why it happened seems to me to be willfully ignoring the rather large elephant seated squarely in the middle of their living room. That takes talent.

I think it’s much more likely that obama was telling the truth then and is lying now. I suppose it could be the other way around, but all things considered, it seems unlikely.
You call them the legacy media, others the mainstream media. But it’s the religious media. Right wing conservative media with a Judea-Christian slant is, from my perspective as a convinced atheist, far more secular than the liberal left wing media. So for them the ‘error in fact checking’ is not an argument. It’s an article of faith, not to be doubted.

I would like to check two facts. The week after Sarah Palin was announced as the Vice Presidential candidate, hundreds of reporters rushed to her home town, Wasilla Alaska, to dig for her bio tidbits. All the while, the information on Hussein Obama has been unreported since 1991, extant in open literature. If true, it disqualified him as a candidate for the office for which he campaigned.
Perhaps our razor sharp journalists can explain why neither he, or they, discovered this until a dead man, Mr. Breitbart, reported it. I conjecture that it would have sold newspapers in the last election cycle. It has been charged that the press was in the tank for Obama. Perhaps there is an explanation for this lousy journalism, threatening our way of live. Maybe some anchorman can explain this incompetence. Maybe not.
One could say that Mr. Obama is an entire composite. Obama has admitted his one book has composite persons and we can see that his birth place, childhood, girlfriends and many other aspects of his life are composites. Barrack Obama was Barry Soetoro when he entered college supposedly as a foreign student. Who knows since his records are sealed. And why is that?

Also, let’s not get too excited about the lack of facts and logic at Media Matters. After all, they are a propaganda outlet masquerading as a fact-checking organization. Personal attacks, obfuscation, distortion, and the like are the norm there; facts and logic are irrelevant. To me, the only use for sites like MM is as a case study of propaganda techniques. It’s fun every once in a while to dissect their arguments – which propaganda techniques do they use? In fact, this is a generally useful skill for dealing with lefties. Synopsis of Arizona’s Ballot restrictions, Hawaii’s non-compliance and Tim Adam’s affidavit
The persistent theory, which has been addressed by various entities like urban legend investigative website Snopes.com to prove and/or actually believe, Mr. Obama’s claim to US citizenship is back in the news.
Enter Arizona’s Secretary of State Ken Bennett, who claims he is not a birther but insists he must follow state law, ensuring that candidates on the ballot for president of the United States are indeed citizens.
“I’m not a birther. I believe the president was born in Hawaii — or at least I hope he was,” Bennett told Mike Broomhead in a radio interview on KFYI. “But my responsibility as secretary of state is to make sure that ballots in Arizona are correct and that those people whose names are on the ballot have met all qualifications for the office they are seeking.”
Bennett said he would consider keeping Obama off the state’s ballot if Hawaii does not satisfy his request for verification. He insisted that his was not a political move, even though he has plans to run for governor in 2014, or a cave to the pressures of lunatic fringers but was instead a response to over 1,200 emails questioning President Obama’s citizenship. The Secretary of State noted that it had been eight weeks since he had initiated the request and was surprised by Hawaii’s non-response.
Bennett also said that Hawaii state officials had been none too pleased with yet another request for authentication.
It is a request that seems to have continued non-stop since 2008 and rumors began to spread that the then junior senator from Illinois might have been somewhere other than in the United States. It has continued even after the controversy reached a point where even the president himself petitioned the state of Hawaii to release the long-form of his birth certificate in 2010 to put the matter to rest. He had done so after business mogul Donald Trump, who at the time was speaking in terms of a possible GOP presidential run, made headlines with his doubts as to Obama’s place of birth. Trump even went so far as to claim he had investigators in Hawaii that had uncovered “interesting things” about the president, but those “things” were never disclosed.

Former Hawaii elections clerk Tim Adams has now signed an affidavit swearing he was told by his supervisors in Hawaii that no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Barack Obama Jr. in Hawaii and that neither Queens Medical Center nor Kapi’olani Medical Center in Honolulu had any record of Obama having been born in their medical facilities.
Adams was employed at the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division from May 2008 through September 2008.
His position was senior elections clerk, overseeing a group of 50 to 60 employees responsible for verifying the identity of voters at the Absentee Ballot Office. It was in this capacity that Adams became aware of the search for Obama’s birth-certificate records.
During the course of my employment,” Adams swears in the affidavit (viewable in full as part 1 and part 2), “I became aware that many requests were being made to the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division, the Hawaii Office of Elections, and the Hawaii Department of Health from around the country to obtain a copy of then-Senator Barack Obama’s long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate.”
As he inquired about the birth certificate, he says, his supervisors told him that the records were not on file at the Hawaii Department of Health.
“Senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division told me on multiple occasions that no Hawaii long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Senator Obama in the Hawaii Department of Health,” Adams’ affidavit reads, “and there was no record that any such document had ever been on file in the Hawaii Department of Health or any other branch or Department of the Hawaii government.”
Besides a verifiable:1) Birth Certificate forgery, 2)now a definitive affidavit stating a record of birth in Hawaii for Mr. Obama is non-existent and 3) an Associated Press reporter stating Mr. Obama was Kenyan-born. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck…must be a duck.

The Acton & Dystel brochure biography also calls Obama’s father a “Kenyan finance minister.” But he was not a finance minister. He was merely an economist with the Kenyan Ministry of Transportation. Working for a ministry does not make one its head. Are we to believe that Goderich invented the occupation of Obama’s father or that it was another “fact-checking error?
