Stipulation: I have no dog in the fight between Mittens and the Gummy Bear. As a conservative who wants to support a solid conservative who has shown evidence that they can stick to principles and win a national contest…well, I don’t really have anywhere to go, do I? None of the final four are convincing on both fronts.
Especially when the “anti-establishment” candidate who has been in Washington DC since Lincoln was splitting logs complains about his opponent’s dishonest attacks from the left, and then follows up with a dishonest attack from the left of his own.
At his first rally of the morning, Newt Gingrich rolled out a new attack line: Mitt Romney took kosher food away from elderly Jewish people.
“He eliminated serving kosher food for elderly Jewish residents under [Medicaid],” Gingrich said. “I did not know this; it just came out yesterday. The more we dig in, I understand why George Soros in Europe yesterday said it makes no difference if it’s Romney or Obama, we can live with either one.”
Didn’t happen. The cut wouldn’t have forced anyone to eat non-kosher food. It would have outsourced preparing the kosher food and saved the state a lot of money. Very very dumb of Team Newt to bring this up, since it ends up making Romney look frugal and religiously sensitive. Then again, we know that negative noise works no matter what the underlying facts are.
What we see here is Gingrich using the tactics of the left (oops) to amp up the fear and defend every penny of government spending. That’s objectively what he is doing.
What’s a conservative supposed to do with this? It’s making me think about Sam Houston quite a bit; either the first or the third of his “Texas” quotes will do.

Man, when robobryan preston’s knee jerks, it really jerks.
If you want a guy to run into a fire, get him on your team, cause he’s a runing full steam ahead.
You would think he would get embarrassed about shilling after a while.
But no, nothing embarrasses little chuckie.
I wonder if he will ever have a positive word to say about Romney.
Yesterday or today, one of the gang had something good to say. it was along the lines of “he tacks into the wind well”.
I endorsed Romney in 2008, but not this time around because he has run a disappointingly blech campaign and we’ve had other choices available.
You’ve been asking everyone to say something good about their candidates, ProNewt… what do you have to say that’s good about this? Hmmm?
You’ve also been beating up on people who point out negatives about other candidates, yet here you are, being negative again.
I’m no fan of the guy with one sparkly glove (used to change the channel on XM every single time one of his songs came on), but perhaps you need to start the change you’re requesting with the Man in the Mirror.
Not sure what you are talking about CW, but that’s not unusual.
I can’t find anything good to say about taking Kosher food away from old Jewish people, so I don’t know where to go on this one. Maybe you want me to praise McRomeny for saving a couple of bucks to offset an infinitesmal fraction of the massive deficits caused by Romneycare, but I’m having a hard time bellying up to that one. Seems to me it would have been better to let the old folks keep their food and not slap billions of dollars in new taxes on the people of Massachusetts.
But that’s just me. I don’t care for the liar so I’m not as swooning about this kind of stuff as you are.
I’m still waiting for somebody to say something good about Mitt, other than the guy who likes hime because he is good at “tacking into the wind”
And I’m always flattered that you read all my posts. It’s good to have an audience.
No, I’m saying you should find something positive to say about your Secular Savior Newt, rather than always knocking people down.
You’ve been challenging people to say something nice about Mittens, so why don’t you show us how it’s done and say something nice about Newtonium in the context of this post and the attack ad Newtonium’s launched?
Or is it all about hatred of Mittens for you? I think it is.
Newt’s tactics are Romney’s tactics too. What does Romney do when he gets behind in the polls? He attacks his opponents either directly or through a PAC. Does he have a positive message? I haven’t heard it yet.
Ok, you got Romney’s defense in, and you credit it, as if it were factual. That’s ok, I’m willing to accept at least the intent of the rule, even if it had perverse results.
And here I thought this was the real story in Florida.

“Very very dumb of Team Newt to bring this up, since it ends up making Romney look frugal and religiously sensitive.”
And it makes Newt look like the sort of money-no-object spendthrift that we can ill afford anywhere near DC right now. A Romney campaign official recently said that Gingrich has been “running around with scissors” for quite some time and that all Mitt needs to do is stay out of the way. That observation seems to be quite spot-on right about now.
As far as true conservatives being unsatisfied with the current choices I think the focus should be on ensuring that the House stays red and the Senate gets there too. That can serve as a proper check on the coming left-of-right-of-center administration.

Romney has forfeited his right to complain about unfair tactics.
Nobody gives a hoot if other candidates hurts Romney’s feelings, or lie or whatever.
This is the kind of distinctions that bad journalists can’t make. It MATTERS who draws first blood. The candidate who starts the dirty tactics has absolutely no right to complain about anything.
Gingrich started his campaigning completely positive and substantive. Romney chose to start the war. He made his own bed.
Going nuclear negative against a guy who has ten times the ability to punch back at you…is about as stupid a strategy as one could imagine.
And…it backfired. Dumb as dirt.
Getting caught lying through your teeth about a negative…is TWICE as bad. Romney wanted Kosher food made off premises and brought in…NOT to deprive elderly Jews of kosher meals.
Voters are going to respond to “he started it….whiiiiiiine”? Get real.
Especially when your candidate is ALREADY painted as erratic, out of control, petty and vindictive. Go ahead, play right into that caricature…brilliant…just brilliant.
He basically just handed Romney the nomination.
Here’s to hoping Santorum can pick up the pieces and keep going until the convention.

Please remember Sam Houston was a Tennessean, one of those for whom the ‘Volunteer State’ was named. The sentiments are the same in east tennessee, I assure you. Just don’t assume Texas as the genisis of those thoughts. Google ‘State of Franklin”.
