Los Angeles school officials say a substitute teacher has lost her job after making anti-Semitic comments during an interview.
In a statement Tuesday, schools Superintendent John Deasy condemned remarks made by Patricia McAllister during a protest rally last week.
In an Oct. 12 interview with Reason.com at a Los Angeles rally, McAllister said “Zionist Jews and the Federal Reserve” need to be run out of this country.
Deasy says that although freedom of speech is a protected right of public employees, the LAUSD can’t set a good example for students while tolerating disrespectful, intolerant or discriminatory behavior.

The giveaway quote that shows he is being ironic is that he says it amuses him the FIRST SENTENCE in the Iranian web site is correct: namely, the headline, “OWS protesters condemn zionists for crisis”, which is precisely what they do.

1.) Israel does not receive 1 dime in “welfare” or “30 Billion in war relief” from the USA or any other nation.
2.) What Israel DOES receive are LOANS, which by the way, have ALWAYS been paid back, in full, and on time. Israel is one of the few nations that has paid back her notes to the US. This FACT is public, and a matter of government record.
3.) Of those loans, Israel is required to spend 80% of that money on AMERICAN made military material, and other USA made products, which she does, and this also helps to keep Americans employed.
4.) The money Israel has borrowed over the years has not only been been back, but it has been used to build a nation that is self sufficient with the highest standard of living in the entire region. She has used this money to build the only democratic nation in the region- free and open to all religions.
5.) And, Israel excels in all areas of medical research, computer technology, and the sciences. Israel light years ahead of all others. The USA benefits from her medical, compute, scientific, and military technological advancements as well.

You seem to have left out one little detail about the $30 Billion- it came about in 2007 to offset the US advanced weaponry sales to Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations who have attacked Israel in the past, is over a 10 year period, and was conceived as an emergency measure in light of Iran’s growing threats and influence in the region, which is also against US interests and security, as the present situation concerning Iran readily proves. You see, it is very difficult to discuss your question with someone who has no idea of history. Of course the question itself, shows an antisemitic bias. Where did you get exactly 110 countries? But yes, many did. Here are a few reasons; 1. Christian hatred because the Jews did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah. This was the seminal reason which embedded antisemitism in the consciousness of Europe. There were other reasons, but this is not the place to talk about them. 2. There was a nice game going on in the Middle ages. Kings and princes would invite the Jews to their countries because that is how the countries of Europe developed their economies. Then, when the king’s extravagance emptied the country’s coffers, he just told the Jews to pack their bags, leaving their money and real estate. Then after some time had passed, the king “permitted” the Jews to return, and the whole thing started anew.

Zombie, I wasn’t sure where the correct place for this would be, but I have something of a topic suggestion. With the Occupy movement so widespread, I’m sure other people would like to participate in the type of citizen photojournalism at which you are so good. I personally am in Philly (where I hear we are about to get an Occupy National Assembly), and I’ve been hoping since the beginning to take some photos, since I work only 1.5 blocks from the encampment. But, I have some logistics-type questions (should I change out of my suit and into jeans? Do I ask permission before taking someone’s picture, or try to do it surreptitiously? Do I need a cover story? etc.) that have made me a little hesitant. If you would be willing to write an article on how to be responsible and safe while photographing protests, it would be very helpful. Thank you, I appreciate any advice you have for us amateurs.
I can’t write an entire essay about it, but here are some basic tips:
- It’s best not necessarily to have a “cover story” when photographing an event but at least decide on a “persona.” Your outfit and behavior will depend on your chosen persona. And also, what you can “get away with” will also depend on your persona.
- There is not “right” or “wrong” or “best” or “worst” type of persona to choose. Sometimes blending in as one of the protesters is the best way to go; sometime posing as a specific kind of outsider; and so on.
- I personally have a wide array of personas to choose from. Some of the ones I have adopted include:
A standard protester
A radical anarchist crazy protester
A middle-class liberal “slumming” at a protest for a day
A mystified tourist who doesn’t speak English
A sympathetic leftie tourist
A miffed or outraged “square” tourist
A jaded local resident
…etc.
Other people adopt more confrontational personas (or simply stay true to themselves, with the same result):
A conservative counter-protester
A blustery argument-starter
A purposely suspicious-looking undercover agent, hoping to be outed and get surrounded by aggressive punks
A mainstream media member
An artistic professional photographer
…etc.
And then there is my most common “persona,” which is that of a random passerby who is not even taking pictures. This only works if you have to capacity to have a hidden camera, or take pictures so surreptitiously that no one notices.
Also, I sometimes shift personas during one day, to match the situation.
Whether or not you feel the need to ask for permission is entirely dependent on the persona you adopt. But 95% of the time, you don’t need to ask permission because people at a public protest are there to get media coverage, so it is expected. You might only need to ask permission under rare circumstances if a person is off by themselves and/or not necessarily participating in the protest at that moment.
Other tips: Don’t skimp on the photographs. If you see something interesting, don’t just take A picture of it. Take two, three, four or more pictures of it. Later, you can prune through your pictures and discard the blurry/off-center/lame pictures and keep the best one. Nothing is more frustrating than having your picture of the most interesting thing not come out properly.
Also: Gather courage and wade into the action. Don’t just stand off at a distance taking pictures from afar. They never look as good. Get right up in front of the people/things you want to immortalize, and take pictures at close range. But don’t linger. Zip in, get the shot, and move on.
When posting your photos, don’t make the mistake of “more is better.” Actually, less is better. You may take 100 photos, but choose just the very best ones and post those. The also-ran photos, of random crowd shots or whatever, just muddy the message.
If you are wearing a business suit and think that you will attract negative attention, then use that as the basis for your decision:
Do you WANT to attract negative attention? If so (like, for example, Andrew Breitbart, who riles them up just to observe them acting badly), then stay in your suit and expect a wild ride. If you don’t have the nerve for that, and DON’T want negative attention, but instead want to mingle unnoticed in the crowd, then yes, change clothes.
It all depends on your personality, and what you are looking for.

To add to this: the mistake I think many liberal “anti-zionist” Jews are making is in thinking that being against Israel would somehow make the antisemites not hate them. In reality, if Israel is destroyed tomorrow and all the Jews expelled, it would take the “anti-zionists” who now say the Jews should go back to Europe where they came from about 17 nanoseconds to start claiming the exact opposite, and start insisting that the Jews must go back to Palestine where they came from. I just wonder: if anyone had made similar comments about Blacks, would they have been summarily fired? (I think so!) Most workplaces (even unionized) have rules of conduct to which individuals must adhere, and violation of which can lead to termination of employment. If she was willing to unburden herself of such nonesense on video tape than what might she do in the classroom?
