NC Gov. Bev Perdue, Democrat, said Tuesday that congressional elections should be suspended so the nation can deal with the economy.
“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover,” Perdue said at a rotary club event in Cary, N.C., according to the Raleigh News & Observer. “I really hope that someone can agree with me on that.”
Facing the inevitable uproar that ensued, Perdue’s staff scrambled and called the line a “joke” and “hyperbole.” Very few bought that spin, and now newly released audio of Perdue’s comments proves that she was not joking at all. Her tone is straight, flat and serious. No one in the audience laughs.

Makes me wonder if she plans to build a gulag in her state for those (as Stalin would call them) “Article 51s’ (Republicans) – stick it at the top of the highest peaks in the Smoky Mtns and send them there in winter.
She’ll find out who those enemies are AFTER the 2012 elections really ARE suspended. Those who protest will be rounded up.
But… Isn’t it the Right which has all the tendencies towards totalitarianism and puritanical religious fanaticism!? Of course Obama was joking when he said he’d like to do an end run around the Congress… Tom Friedman was joking when he said we should emulate China… And Purdue was joking when she said we should suspend democracy to “do what’s right”. I’m confused.
Sometimes I think the entire Democratic Party is secretly working for Jonah Goldberg to promote sales of Liberal Fascism.
the “still” of the video has purdue looking much like sebelius; a crude comparison to the way the “darkside of the force” corrupts from the inside out and it’s effects on the tainted and the physical similarities of statist hags the world always strikes a chord with me
Thanks for the laugh this morning. I needed that. Too damn funny.
I like “Statist Hags.” An appropriate description for those working for The Calamitous Clown.
Very keen observation on the similarities of the visuals among female pols and bureaucrats who lean heavily leftward: they tend to sport that “Nurse Ratchet” look.
Curses, the proles are on to her, now she’ll have to burn the Reichstag.
No, context and tone do not suggest that she was joking.
Good to know.
Now the subversives want to throw away the Constitution instead of simply misinterpreting it.
And the hag does have a Republican opponent for next year’s election (if there is one) in Pat McCrory, former mayor of Charlotte.

Doesn’t he support high speed rail? Too bad there is not a primary challenger he will be an improvement but NC can and should do better. McCory is the establishment candidate, after all, it’s his turn…typical GOP. Will he have the courage to stand up to the Federal government as Scott Walker, Rick Scott, Jan Brewer would?
I don’t live in NC and I don’t know a thing about him, either positive or negative. All I know is that this hag MUST be defeated. She has very dangerous ideas and is also so stupid that she actually says them out loud. The others may think it, but she doesn’t even have a filter.
I’m trying to translate this stupid remark into normal human speech. Here’s my breakdown:
1. The country’s problems are too big for ANYONE to solve in just one term.
2. Since we know this, we shouldn’t penalize our Congresspeople when they inevitably fail to do so.
3. Rather than kicking them out for their failure and electing a bunch of rookies, we should just let the experienced ones continue working until they come up with some solutions.
That doesn’t sound unreasonable to me. Let’s just give the poor bums another chance. Maybe they’ll get it right eventually.
The obvious, legal, and right way to do that would be to reelect the current crop of politicians. How she ended up with “let’s suspend elections” is totally beyond me. At best, it was another “macaca moment.” Engage brain before running mouth. At worst, as many here seem to think, it was a Freudian slip exposing the anti-democratic feelings in the heart of a statist progressive Democrat. I’m afraid I tend toward the latter interpretation.
It’s amazing that a hundred years ago many politicians could speak for hours without notes, keep people interested in what they were saying, and not say anything blatantly stupid. Today’s pols can’t even manage a ten-second sound bite without screwing it up.
Ah yes, A “Martial Law-and-Order” Democrat
Way to Uphold and Defend the Constitution!
Unbelievable! Should be removed from Office with speed and Prejudice.
The Last Refuge of a Scoundrel: Dictatorship.
Spectacularly Bad Judgement and Unfit For Office.
Let’s see we need to cancel the elections because of the economic crisis. How does this compare to other times of crisis.
1812 — Presidential and congressional elections held.
1814 — Congressional elections held.
1862 — Congressional Elections held
1864 — Presidential and Congressional elections
1918 — Congressional elections
1932/36 — Presidential and congressional elections
1934/38 — Congressional election
1942 — Congressional elections
1944 — Presidential and congressional elections
The joke here, is the thought that if we leave Democrats in congress, they will turn the economy around.
Bob Beckel just said that he’s a friend of the good Governor and then said she wasn’t necessarily a Rhodes scholar. Was a friend, I think.
I have to admit that the woman sounded like a moron to me when I saw her on TV during hurricane Irene.
This latest thing pretty much seals the deal.
Great joke on her part. It’s bound to generate just as many chuckles as when Pres. O announces he’s decided to put both houses of Congress under “protective custody” in order to put the partisan bickering behind us and get on with the urgent matter of fixing the economy.
