‘You Lie!’ — Joe Wilson Was Right

On Sept. 9, 2009, President Barack Obama delivered a major address on the subject of his health care reform bill, which at that time had not passed Congress. The president declared in that speech, delivered before a joint session of Congress and entire nation on television, that ObamaCare would not apply to illegal aliens. Specifically, he said:

There are also those who claim that our reform efforts would insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false. The reforms — the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.

AUDIENCE MEMBER: You lie! (Boos.)

The audience member was Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina. Here’s video of the moment.

Wilson’s outburst stirred condemnation from the Democratmedialeft but didn’t hurt him: He raised a load of campaign cash while the left denigrated him, and he became an instant national figure and hero here on the Right. And he was re-elected.

And it turns out that Wilson was right all along. The president was lying.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on Tuesday that it has awarded $28.8 million to 67 community health centers with funds from the Obamacare health reform law.

Of that $28.8 million, “approximately $8.5 million will be used by 25 New Access Point awardees to target services to migrant and seasonal farm workers,” Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Spokeswoman Judy Andrews told CNSNews.com. HRSA is a part of HHS.

Andrews said that grant recipients will not check the immigration status of people seeking services.

“Health centers do not, as a matter of routine practice, ask about or collect data on citizenship or other matters not related to the treatment needs of the patients seeking health services at the center,” Andrews said.

Further, the grant recipients are required to serve “all residents“ who walk through their doors.

Points of emphasis added. There are between 12 and 20 million illegal aliens in the United States. The fact that immigration status will not be checked at these health centers means illegal aliens will be treated, at American taxpayer expense, and in contradiction to what President Obama said. He lied in the service of passing a bill that a majority opposed and which is helping sink the US economy.

If his lips are moving… HE’S LYING!

    • If $8.5M is all that is used for undocumented immigrants, I’m okay with that. Furthermore, if it is USED to the good of people, I’m okay with that. How anyone could focus on $8.5M worth of actually used funds that fund HEALTH CARE!… when TRILLIONS are being poured down the drain in every other direction… Has anyone ever said “Gee, I’m glad the TSA exist. That’s a great program, let’s spend $100 BILLION on it!”… has anyone ever thought to themselves that the $30 BILLION that the US spends on the IRS so they can have “agents” is a great investment? In my opinion; maybe God will be thanked for his mercy and the opportunity a person will have after been treated for an illness with some of my tax dollars. They just may say it in a different language. I’m okay with that. Just stop WASTING it! TSA, FBI could shrink, Federal Air Marshalls? do we really need them? Put any militant sargeant on a plane and tell him to prevent take over. SO MUCH WASTE… and people focus on $$ being used for GOOD!

Everything Obama has done to date was easily foretold by the information widely available long before the ’08 election and yet, 40% of Americans are still too racist, stupid, treasonous and/or stone ignorant to have a clue what’s going on. That’s just pathetic.

    • if there is the freedom to be anti-racist, there should be freedom to be racist

    • anyway i am not racist, i was just meaning opinion’s freedom

  3. While all eyes are turned to the current financial crisis, the administration continues to govern against the will of the people. Expect more announcements of policy moves that would, in normal times, garner outrage.

  4. 4. John

Did anyone really think anything dfferent? Did we really expect Obamacare to exempt illegal aliens? Did we really expect America to stop throwing away our tax dollars while liberals control the White house and Senate? Wake up America. This kind of liberalism is draining our coffers.

  5. 5. Wigglesworth

It’s one thing for illegal aliens to get treatment in the emergency room, but for Obamacare/HHS to purposely “target services to migrant and seasonal farm workers” tells us that Joe Wilson was absolutely correct. Our tax dollars are being allocated for illegal alien health and wellness.

  6. Obama lying is turning into a ‘dog bites man’ story, unfortunately. A real news story would be when he tells the truth. I’m not sure that he ever has, except to his peeps and accidentally to Joe the Plumber.

The man is a pathological liar, as are most of the Democrat caucus.

Did anyone really believe that this illegal alien loving redistributionist president wouldn’t cover these people under Obamacare?

The saddest part of the whole Joe Wilson saga was that Boehner and the Republican leadership made him apologize for his outburst. Honesty and outrage causing a spontaneous outburst? That can’t be tolerated in American politics anymore.

We are reaching a breaking point.

I disliked Obama’s socialist policies and called him a liar before it was cool!

“Health centers do not, as a matter of routine practice, ask about or collect data on citizenship or other matters not related to the treatment needs of the patients”

But as the situation in Florida has shown, progressives take no issue with “collecting data” on gun possession from patients when it suits their anti-second ammendment agenda. And no, that has nothing to do with treatment needs. Less guns does not mean less violence. Ask the British.

  10. “…The saddest part of the whole Joe Wilson saga was that Boehner and the Republican leadership made him apologize for his outburst. ..”

That I DON’T agree with. We always berate the Left for their complete hypocrisy on repeated demands FOR, with their perpetual loss OF civility the second something doesn’t go the way they envision. It certainly doesn’t excuse us from behaving as we know and expect we should.

That having been said, there’s absolutely NOTHING standing in Joe Wilson’s (or anyone’s) way from calling Obama a bald faced liar ~ complete with the facts to back it up ~ in any press conference or interview thereafter, and THAT’S what I find so hugely frustrating. Let. It. Fly.

When you get the immediate and inevitable, “How DARE you?!”, let the facts fly as well and dare them to dispute them. All you get is sputter and, at long, LONG last, the fact that it IS merely ‘sputter’ is being remarked upon and pointed out by the few journalists with any integrity in the MSM. (I’m thinking Jake Tapper specifically. He will NOT be getting any WH Christmas cards or invitations.)

We have to survive these next 15 months.

    • Earl

I’m with you on this one. It was the right thing to say, but it was not the appropriate place or time to say it, and an apology was appropriate.

We need to stop imitating the ill manners of liberals who think everything is acceptable short of violence, and show the appropriate respect. I’ll always refer to him as President Obama, even as I document the lies he tells and the damage he’s doing to our country — not because I respect the man, but because I respect his office.

As to this particular lie from our President, I’m willing to bet that this drop in the bucket will be followed by more blatant examples of lies about the health care plan. We already know it will cost more than they said — expect those numbers to rise dramatically in the coming years. We’ll soon see more examples of illegal aliens being covered, costs rising, and of course the “death panels” deciding whose treatment is too expensive.

  11. 11. RKae

As I recall it, Wilson’s outburst was deemed racist by Maureen Dowd, who claimed that there was an unspoken “boy” at the end of it. She heard (in her head) “You lie, boy!”

So I think in an effort to be accurate with leftist fantasy world reality, you should have to put a bracketed “boy” at the end of that.

  12. 12. Walt C

To be fair, Obama was actually planning on giving all the illegals amnesty before obamacare became effective, thus making no money available for illegals. /sarc

If we are serious about turning back the tide of illegal immigration, we have to understand why they come here. In a word, work. If there weren’t employers here who target illegal immigrants for hire due to cheap wages, no insurance (i.e. dump them onto public clinics and let the tax payers foot the bill), etc., most illegal immigration would stop. Until we crack down on employers who hire them, don’t expect too much progress. If employers are faced with prison time, that would go a long way towards stemming the flow. But don’t count on it. Between bribed politicians and Americans unwilling to do such work at the wages the illegals receive.
The only solution I see is higher wages & benefits to entice Americans to take those jobs. That means we will pay more for our food, etc. Nobody wants to go there.
But is it really more if we can cut the costs that are required to deal with this human tide of underclass in this country illegally and the erosion of law and society it’s causing?
But nobody seems to be talking about that.

    • Phos

Or perhaps the problem is onerous laws and regulations that raise the cost of hiring an employee. You seem to be blaming employers for problems mostly created by the government.

If low wages are the problem perhaps the tax code should be changed to provide more of an incentive to pay higher wages. Perhaps a 150% deduction for all wages, taxes, benefits for all employees paid 2-4 times the poverty line ($40,000-$80,000). Perhaps tax healthcare and insurance the same whither purchased by the employee or employer.

Going to an emergency room for routine healthcare is not efficient. But that is due partially to government mandate. Perhaps a flat-fee medical clinic could be next to the emergency room. True emergency charity cases could be triaged to the emergency room.

      • Tim P

        Phos,
        Good points.
However, having been an employer, I don’t think that the laws to hire low wage workers are so onerous that they drive employers to hire illegals. I think employers make the quite rational decision to hire them because they a)work for less, b)don’t require insurance, etc.,c)eliminate much paperwork and record keeping. They want to increase their profits AND as I said, many Americans won’t do the work, presently.
Yes, lessening governmental intrusion is beneficial. But even if we did so tomorrow, it wouldn’t slow the flow of illegals. Many large employers arrange to have them bussed to work locations in large numbers, i.e. major meat packing plants.
I don’t pretend to have the answer, but I do know we won’t solve this problem by only attacking one aspect of it. It needs to be attacked on all fronts and I don’t see that happening.

  15. 15. Jerome

My Mama taught me never to call anyone a lying sack of sh_t so I shall not refer to the President in that fashion.

  16. He lied because he is a statist. Lying is neither good nor bad to them, per se, it’s what is done with the lie. If it is a tool employed in the service of the state and its further empowerment, then it’s good. If not, then it’s something to denigrate. Obama has no moral foundation, no moorings, no paradigm or framework for righteousness or evil, except that he is a statist. That controls everything. The state is god, and everything is to be subservient to it.

Now you understand everything you need to know about Obama.

A few mornings ago, I was listening to Bill Hemmer talk with Rich Lowry and Mary Anne Marsh, the dem political strategist. She flatly stated that Wilson stood up during the 2011 State of the Union and yelled out his comment. I don’t doubt that she knew better, but she was using this instance of incivility to justify dems calling tea party members terrorists, suicide bombers and jihadis. I expect more of the same lying and obfuscation up to and beyond the election from every dem and every MSM outlet.

@Tim:If there weren’t employers here who target illegal immigrants for hire due to cheap wages, no insurance (i.e. dump them onto public clinics and let the tax payers foot the bill), etc., most illegal immigration would stop. Until we crack down on employers who hire them, don’t expect too much progress.

I used to think the same thing, until I discovered that it is illegal to refuse to hire an illegal immigrant. Refusing to hire an illegal immigrant is ground for a lawsuit under the Civil Rights Act. Hiring an illegal immigrant grants immunity from such a lawsuit.

That can’t be right, you say, how does that work?

An immigrant applies for a job with obviously fake documents. If you reject those documents, and he files a complaint with EEOC and they sue, you will be required to prove that you subject all documents to the same level of scrutiny without regard to race, national origin, etc.

Not being an idiot, you hire him and send his paperwork to SSA. They write back saying there is no such SSN, or that it belongs to a different name. So what do you do now? If you fire him, and he files a complaint with EEOC and they sure, you will be required to prove that you treat all workers whose SSN doesn check out to the same level of scrutiny without regard to race, national origin, etc.

All you can do without running afoul of the EEOC, is ask him to clear up the SSN discrepancy.

So it’s easy to blame employers, but their hands are tied by the laws on discrimination.

It seems odd that the focus is on 12 million illegal aliens, rather than 160+ million US citizens that pay no income taxes.

Of the two groups, who do you think is more likely to result in the bankruptcy of country?

    • Boyd

Excellent point. The “fair share” of taxes for half the Country is zero. Actually less than zero because of the earned income credit. Is it outrageous to claim the poor should pay taxes? Let’s put it this way. I stood yesterday watching a resident of a welfare apartment complex I was working on haul in his new 50″ plasma TV. It was a struggle for him since the onlookers were too busy sitting around drinking their beer and smoking their cigs to lend a hand. I’m talking about the lowest 20% of that 50% here.

Poor? I have worked in Mexican slums building houses (400 sq. ft. sheds really) for tears in their eyes grateful people whose idea of a bathroom was a 5 gallon bucket screened by a couple pallets and a blanket. I have worked on 45 of these apartment projects all over my State for the last 20 years. No American is poor in any sense that the rest of the world (or even I) can relate too so why are they givin a pass on supporting this Country?

      • Don Rodrigo

Is it outrageous to claim the poor should pay taxes?

(Pssst . . . Boyd), those people aren’t poor, they’re simply not affluent or “middle-middle class.” The majority of them are significantly above the poverty line. There should be no “outrage” about them not paying taxes.

OTOH: if those who do currently pay taxes did so for a substantially smaller federal budget that was also balanced, then I personally wouldn’t begrudge the rest not paying taxes, except for one thing: they don’t get a refund, they just don’t pay.

    • SongDog

      Santi,

True as that may be at the moment, if free health care for illegals becomes well established, we will be deluged with illegals, and not all of them will be Hispanics. Access to the American health care system is so valued that foreign dignitaries and the well-to-do come here regularly for treatment, even though they have access to the best care available in their home country. There isn’t enough gold in Fort Knox to pay for health care for everyone who can sneak into the country.

    Gabe,

There is a simple answer: put up a “WE USE E-VERIFY FOR ALL EMPLOYMENT APPLICATIONS” poster AND THEN DO IT! Check them all, fire the ones that come back phony. Then call the ICE on them.

I’m in favor of making all employers check every employee they now have and any future applicants. After that, we should be instituting a $10,000 fine for the employer per illegal hire per day. Bankrupt a few of the scumbags who are dumping their externalities on us taxpayers and we’d get some changes in a big hurry.

Of course, to do that we would have to have a government that actually LIKED the American people, instead of one that dislikes them so badly they want to import a replacement citizenry. Anyone who thinks Obama and the Dems don’t hate this country needs a guide dog since they certainly can’t see what is right in front of them. Good for Joe Wilson! 2012 can’t come soon enough!

  24. 24. RebeccaH

I remember that video clip (and had to watch it again for the sheer pleasure), and the most delicious thing about it was Nancy Pelosi’s look of absolute shock, that someone would actually accuse The One of lying. Which, of course, all of us who opposed Obamacare knew he was doing. The thing is, she knew Obama was lying too, so right there you have the ultimate picture of Leftist Hypocrisy.

Illegal aliens cannot legally vote in our National elections, but their offspring born here can–when they reach the age of maturity. This program specifically targets those future voters, and provides a reason to vote Democrat. That the taxpayers are forced to pay for such political gamesmanship is nothing short of criminal.

    • Francesca

No, the illegals cannot LEGALLY vote. How about voting ILLEGALLY? That is what is going to happen in 2010. How are we going to prevent the election from being stolen by these people, not to mention by dead people voting?

This is a perfect example of what the Left describes as “institutionalized racism”, which is another way of saying “I can smell racism even if I can’t see it or hear it, it’s sitting right below the surface”. Of course this never applies to “anti-Zionists” who spew rhetoric that sounds like it came right out of the pages of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. No, they’re not antisemites, they’re just critical of the policies of the Israeli government, at least according to the very same Leftists who see racism against “oppressed” minorities hiding under every rock.

  32. 32. Scott Hoffman

Did Obama lie? (Well, given the scenario, probably.) But one of the differences between our side and the other side is that to us, the meanings of words still matter. And I’m afraid Mr. Preston hasn’t proved his case with this blog post.

Obama said his reforms wouldn’t insure illegal immigrants.

This blog post is about health centers TREATING illegal immigrants. There’s no insurance involved.

This distinction is one that’s particularly important in the debate. Does it matter if Bill Gates doesn’t have health insurance? No, not one bit. He can still afford the world’s best health care.

We need to refocus this debate on health CARE, not health insurance. The difference is important.

    • caraboska

Praise the Lord. And then there is the matter that doctors are in principle bound by the Hippocratic oath. In the end, they can’t refuse to treat, unless they want to join the ranks of the morally deficient… liars (even perjurers, in this case, since they are under oath).

  33. This article is not saying that all “migrant and seasonal farm workers” are undocumented immigrants. It’s the implementation, of the Obamacare health reform law,the public policy as implemented by The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) stating,”grant recipients will not check the immigration status of people seeking services.” as a matter of practice.

  34. 34. jorja

So how much was set aside for translators for us Americans who don’t speaka da Inglis so well?

  35. 35. tioedong

actually, it’s cheaper in the long run to treat.

Give mom prenatal care, so she doesn’t go into premature labor and you end up with 100 thousand dollars for a PICU of a 2 pound kid.

Give shots to the kids, so your yuppies who read hysterical articles on the danger of MMR and leave their kids unvaccinated won’t catch measles from Mexico.

Check their cough, so that you don’t end up with 200 people exposed to open TB (as happened in the US Congress a score of years ago).

The dirty little secret is in the ‘olden days” before HMO’s, lots of us treated these folks in our office for “cash” or even for free without asking questions, but with HMO’s being the gatekeeper, if you don’t have these socialist style clinics, they won’t get treatment.

    • caraboska

Praise the Lord. This is the most sensible comment I have seen on this thread yet. I would take exception to only one little detail. I would not view the secret tioedong mentions as ‘dirty’. The doctor is merely keeping his/her Hippocratic oath. Because of that oath, this question to treat or not to treat becomes a truth issue for people in the medical profession. Surely we don’t want to pressure doctors to become liars, do we?
