Weinergate: What we know (Update: Weiner hires a lawyer)
For MSM types who wish to start covering Weinergate accurately, or for readers just catching up, here’s a quick primer on the undisputed Weinergate facts.
On Friday night, New York Democrat Rep. Anthony Weiner’s twitter feed sent 21-year-old college student Gennette Nicole Cordova, a Seattle resident, a tweet containing a link to a lewd photo of a man in his briefs. Weiner followed Cordova on twitter, and Cordova followed Weiner on twitter. At the time of the lewd tweet, Weiner had about 45,000 twitter followers but he followed just 91 people, and Cordova was among them. This two-way following relationship allows twitter users to send messages directly to one another without such messages going on either user’s public twitter feeds. Weiner deleted the tweet with the link to the photo four minutes after it went out on his public twitter feeds, and claimed he was hacked, blaming the lewd photo on the hacker. The link that appeared in Weiner’s public twitter feed led to the photo on Weiner’s yfrog account. The photo has also been removed.
Here is a rough Weinergate timeline. If you see errors or items that need clarification, hit me up in comments or email and I’ll correct or clarifiy anything that needs it.
1. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) was very active on twitter on Friday, awaiting a financial disclosure from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, a disclosure that Weiner intended to turn into a political attack on Thomas.
2. Weiner’s twitter feed goes silent for about 3 hours, 24 minutes Friday afternoon/evening, a time during which he is allegedly watching a hockey game. (Weiner’s spokesman later claimed that he had been tweeting about the hockey game during that time, a claim that has turned out to be false.)
3. Before Weiner’s public twitter feed went silent, he sent out the following tweet:

Some MSM accounts of the scandal, including the NYT, have omitted this tweet. It’s relevant because the recipient of the lewd photo lives in Seattle Bellingham, WA (same time zone as Seattle, and Seattle is where Cordova identified herself as being from in her original twitter feed). Weiner is a New York Democrat. Why did he tweet out a time hack to Seattle about a television appearance of his? For whom was this tweet intended?
TweetDeck may also be a useful clue, in that TweetDeck allows users to monitor multiple twitter streams, including their own and any mentions of themselves, public messages and private messages, at the same time. According to the tweet above, Weiner was using TweetDeck on Friday; he could have been managing his public tweets and mentions of himself in two columns while managing any number of private message conversations in other columns. He could also have quickly seen any tweets that he intended to send as private messages appear in his public stream, and any mentions of those tweets by others as well.

I bet his wife would find this article interesting. It’s one thing to blame a hacker, but it’s another thing to try to explain away how he was already this woman’s follower and could have made this mistake just by a one-letter mistype. I’m sure she doesn’t know any of this from hearing him or the MSM.

In America there’s a thing called “innocent until proven guilty.” However, there’s also a thing called “probability.” So… what’s the probability that a twitter account was hacked vs. the probability that a politician is having an improper relationship with someone half his age. Hmmm? .5% vs. 80% I mean, really. If I throw a guy out the window, what’s the probability of him levitating and floating away to safety vs. the probability that he went “splat” on the sidewalk?
If he WASN’T having an illicit relationship, that would actually put him in the miniscule minority of those in his disgusting profession.
When are we going to cut open the heads of politicians and figure out why they are so damned greedy and sex-crazed? Why do they think the entire world is their big buffet table of money and human toys?

It’s a little bugaboo of mine: the proper phrase is not “innocent until proven guilty”, it is “PRESUMED innocent until proven guilty.” Note the parallel construction: presumed/proven. The distinction matters: a person’s true guilt or innocence is established the moment a crime is committed; it is only when the state attempts to punish a criminal that the presumption matters.
But it really doesn’t matter here anyway, because we’re not claiming that the posting of Weiner’s wiener is in itself a crime. Or at least, it doesn’t matter with regards to Weiner. If a hacker or prankster did it, that person might be guilty of a crime.

I much prefer your choice of descriptive nouns and adjectives to any I may have chosen. Years ago, a good friend from West Texas shared this comment with me, and I think it is very appropriate as to Congressman Weiner “We are gonna give this horse thief a fair trial – then hang him”!!! Others can give him any benefit of doubt they can scrape up; not me. He is scum.
I suspect there’s no scientific validity to your suggestion about cutting open politicians heads in order to better understand them. This is not to suggest that your idea lacks merit.
Not only is Weiner alleging that his Twitter account was hacked, he’s also alleging–indirectly–that his yfrog account was hacked so the illicit pic could be added.
Or is Weiner admitting that he has a lewd pic of himself or another man in his public yfrog images?
Either way, Occam’s razor is slicing even deeper into this cover-up.
This is what I have been saying all day. When are they (politicians) FINALLY going to wise up? They have a choice when they get elected: Power or crazy sexual behavior. NOT BOTH.
They don’t access to the “crazy sexual behavior” until they get the power, and in fact, getting that access may be a prime (or parallel secondary) reason for trying to get the power in the first place.
Anyway, in this case, its plain as day that Weiner is behaving like someone with something to hide (eg hiring a lawyer and hiding behind him) instead of someone who was a victim of a rather nasty and in fact criminal personal attack.
If *I* were a sitting US Congressman, and someone used MY personal “Twitter” account to send a 20 year old college student a closeup photo of someone’s “junk”, I’d have a pack of FBI agents so far up their @#$ that they wouldn’t need a colonoscopy for 15 years.
We also know that the EXIF data on the hacked photo does not match the EXIF data on other known photos that weiner uploaded himself on his yfrog account:

It seems to me that the lynchin is the tweet about 5:45 in Seattle, which Wiener has not denied.
If Wiener was hacked, that must have been part of the scam, since it sets up the photo part. The same hacker would have sent both the 545 tweet and the photo tweet.
Surely, if Wiener was hacked and had the wherewithal to recognize it within 4 minutes and thereafter to quickly scrub his tweeter and myfrog acounts, then he would also have had the sense to review all activities for several hours back, and to notice and include that tweet in his public complaint that he had been hacked. Moreover, it’s clear that he was monitoring his tweets somehow, so if the 545 tweet was part of the scam, why didn’t he catch that and recognize a problem. It would have seemed awfully strange to Wiener to see a tweet supposedly from himself that mentionned 545 in Seattle on the public side of his account.
But he wasn’t alerted by the 545 tweet, he didn’t mention it as part of his hacking explanation, and he hasn’t taken any action about it. Yet it is the most important evidence tieing him to the young woman. She has explained the “boyfriend” comment (not serious, she said), and they can plausibly explain the follower business (he was flattering a young admirer), but the 545 tweet is more difficult to explain. Without it, Wiener’s explanation of being hacked would be much more believable.
What we know? We also know that the EXIF data in the hacked photo doesn’t match the EXIF data from known photos from Weiner’s Blackberry/yfrog account.
Why not include that in what you know?

in this article, a confusion occurs that particularly vexes me every time i see it. people outside of Washington state call every city in Washington “Seattle,” other than Spokane. the city in which Cordova lives and goes to school is Bellingham. it would take half the time to drive to Canada than it would to Seattle from there.

weird… i was never confused. i knew within moments of this happening that she was a student at a college (that my daughter went to) an hour and a half away from Seattle.
i suspect that when Rep. Weiner is vindicated, most people who are waiting for him to go down will simply pretend that they never believed this nonsense to begin with. if the “see-saw” of political scandal were real instead of figurative, then the mascots of each party would be real as well… eventually conservatives will find something real to pin on a liberal that is truly scandalous, but in the meantime, there will be a thousand more verifiable conservative scandals that put this garbage to shame.

Weiner’s behavior is inconsistent with being hacked. He has the power to engage the FBI faster than %99.999 of Americans if he believes he has been the victim of a crime. My bet is that he would not want the FBI investigating this “slip up” on his part.
It is not surprising to me in the least that Wiener has trouble with fidelity to his new wife. He certainly has difficulty squaring his political behavior with the Constitution…along with most of his Democrat fellow travelers…and, come to think of it, many of his Republican colleagues as well.

But from the timeline and the previous tweets, its fairly evident that there was some inappropriate online conduct going on between the two, and he inadvertently sent out the photo on his public account. If someone was going to go through the trouble of hacking a congressman’s twitter feed, I’m pretty sure that they could come up with a more salacious photo and send it out to multiple people. Her denials are really non-denials: no one alleges that they ever met in person. They were evidently involved in online-only flirting (and probably more…)

Democrats and the White House pay people to comment on blog sites and spam propaganda, like dishonest comments with links to known left-wing propaganda sites claiming that the EXIF data “proves” something, even though at every one of those links they admits that it actually proves nothing.
It someone other than Weiner did this, he’d have already referred this to the FBI and would let them sort it out. But instead, Weiner’s already lawyered up and is desperately hoping that he can avoid anyone finding out what really happened.
I hope the Congressional Republicans demand an FBI investigation into this security breach of a sitting Congressman. That would cut past all this Democrat-sponsored media propaganda and let the law enforcement agencies get to the truth of what happened.

Am I missing something here or is the elephant in the room the fact that no one has contacted Twitter or YFrog to get to the bottom of this. Because as far as I can see, they may have egg on their faces if they’ve indeed been ‘hacked’ from their end. Of course it’s possible someone just guessed the Weiner-password. But it’s also very possible the Weiner is lying about the whole thing and we should then see if YFrog and Twitter are willing to fall on their swords and kill their reputations for the Weiner.

This article was the first time I’ve heard of “Weinergate” – I’m Canadian – so I was amused to see this article – http://www.torontosun.com/2011/05/29/pc-candidates-privates-appear-on-twitter – just moments ago. It describes a comparable incident involving a candidate for office in our recent federal election. There are some interesting parallels with Weinergate as well as some significant differences.
On re-reading the story I cited, I see that the candidate involved was not a candidate for the recent federal election but is actually an active candidate for the upcoming provincial election here in Ontario. My apologies for the mistake.

This was really sad. Another one of our more famous (though swept under the carpet Senatorial sexcapades) was Ted Kennedy’s recounting of how he and Mary Jo Kopechne(sp?) were involved in a car accident, falling off a bridge into some water. He managed to swim to safety, she drowned. They were at a staff “meeting” at some remote location on Chappaquidic(sp?). He was taking her “home?”

If you’ve read or watched any Sherlock Holmes adventure, you should know that.
Here’s the best part of this story: I want everyone to pause and put yourself in Weiner’s brain the moment he realized the mistake he had just made. The immediate super-surge of adrenalin. The denial: “Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. Oh noooo!”.
Sitting in the chair at his computer, his minding reeling in the minutes that followed, utter terror engulfing him as if he’d just stepped out of an airplane without a parachute — he knew what would follow and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
Then, his mind racing to come up with an excuse. It wasn’t me. I was hacked. No, there’s a digital evidence trail a mile long; I was tweeting with her for an hour before this. How can I hide that? I’ll destroy the computer. Where could I dump the hard drive? No, the picture’s on yFrog and my IP address is all over data trail. Is there a digital serial number encrypted within the photo that could link it to my cell phone? I’ve got to coordinate with her, get our stories straight, make sure she doesn’t freak and breakdown in front of the media.
Now fear is just washing over him in relentless waves. It’s been less than 10 minutes since he deleted the photo from yFrog. If this opens a can of worms, will the others talk? He’s been following young women for months and years, who knows what else he’s been up to? He does. And he knows this could be much much worse than a single lewd photo. He thinks of Elliot Spitzer. Hey, Spitzer survived, he’s got a TV show. But he destroyed his political career! Noooo! No no no.
I’ll get out of this. I was watching hockey, not tweeting with her. It wasn’t me. I didn’t do it. I’ll say Breitbart did it … or maybe that kid that did the Acorn sting, what was his name? I’ll say he set me up.

I love the thought that Weiner has to spend his money on an attorney. I hope its a $600 an hour fee and that hours and hours are charged to his billing record. Yet, does anyone really believe Weiner contacted a FEMALE? I can’t be the only person to recognize Weiner’s preference.
Here are some possible reasons for why this Loser Weiner now has a huge headache over a small bulge in grey underpants:
1. He is being warned by certain powers to whom he answers. Warned about what is the really big question. Maybe not to run for Mayor of New York City…….
2. He is being blackmailed–strangely enough publicly. There may be something going on of which the small bulge in the grey underpants is only the tip of the iceberg (wish I could think of a really good pun here).
3. He is now neutralized. He has been “taken out”, whether he hangs on to his Congressional seat or not. He is a laughingstock to whom the media won’t go for talking head talking points anymore. When one looks at him from now on one will always visualize the small bulge in the grey underpants.

I am just wondering which of the involved parties, Wiener or the young woman, broke the story to the media? All of this is pretty easy to understand — I mean have you ever seen the thing that holds up Weiner’s head? Why wouldn’t the guy post his undies out there if he was trying to impress a young gal? If he sent a picture of his head, it would most likely have to include at least part of that thing that hold it up — on most people this would be described as a neck, but on Weiner, it looks more…well, more like a weiner. Most 2 year olds have larger, more impressive necks — which is quite surprising, considering that Weiner probably spent most of his HS years getting his head battered around like a punching bag. You’d think that sort of thing would build some neck muscle..eh? Maybe having that excessively skinny neck helps him with all his nauseating whinning. I doubt there’s any real proof of this, but I put it out there as worthy speculation. Come to think of it, I’m thinking maybe mother nature (or god to those of you who can’t imagine anything else) just figured that hey, this Weiner guy is going to spend most of his life shooting his big mouth off, so let’s fortify that area and forget about the neck.
Wow to the surprise of all Weiner is a liar!!! Now that he finally came clean about his perverted behavior, he should have to resign, and then be prosecuted like anyone else that lies to Congress! Also Weiner send back all those campaign millions because you will not need them to be Mayor of NYC! NYC does not like liars and people who are dishonest! I think this piece of garbage should do the right thing and resign and crawl back under the rock that he came out of.
