This video (strong content warning), showing yet another beating in a McDonald’s, has been up on Drudge all day. It’s cell phone video of a beating — two women beat a third, while the manager of the restaurant makes a show of trying to help but ends up standing around uselessly. The beating goes on for several minutes, and toward the end, the women administering it attempt to drag their victim out into the parking lot. Meanwhile, the victim is bleeding and begins to have a seizure. Not knowing anything about any of the people involved, it’s impossible to say from the video if the beating triggered the seizure or if the victim has a history of having such episodes. Either way, the fact that the assailants repeatedly kick the victim, drag her around and then attempted to drag her out into the parking lot leads to reasonable speculation that they intended to murder her. What sparked the incident is at this point unknown.
That this video exists at all says quite a bit about where we are as a culture. The videographer does nothing at all to help the victim in any way. He just records the beating on his cell phone. The videographer not only passively records the scene, but later uploads it to the internet. What is his motivation for doing that? When the police are en route (who called them?), he warns the attackers to leave. He never tells them to stop the beating, but does warn them to get out before the police arrive. Oh, he does tell the assailants that their victim is bleeding and having a seizure. The manager reveals himself to be a useless lump. A fourth woman’s intervention is the only thing that slows the attackers down. The men in this video are, simply, not men.
In Ed Driscoll’s post about England yesterday, actor John Cleese laments the slide of his country from a middle class culture to a “yob culture.” What are we to make of this culture, in which assaults occur in public spaces in our cities (this video is said to have been captured in Baltimore, otherwise known as Charm City) and bystanders merely record and upload them to the internet? Appearances can be deceiving, but this particular incident appears to have a strong racial component (we don’t know what started the attack in the first place; the video begins with the assault in progress). We, or some of us, seem to have moved beyond any thought of defending others, or of the criminal justice implications of our own actions. There seems to be a vibrant yob culture and a parasitic voyeur culture taking hold in our cities.
We can debate the debt ceiling and other macro issues all day; meanwhile, we’re rotting away from within.
Update: More here and here. The Mickey D’s is in Baltimore County. The man who shot the video says the victim is a man who was cross dressing and tried to enter the women’s bathroom, and that’s what started the fight.
Update: Just to clarify the previous update, the videographer (for lack of a better word for him at the moment) is claiming the victim is a cross dressing man. That’s what the previous update says. His claim hasn’t been verified by anyone else.

How many people, when considering helping, think twice out of a fear that they will be hassled by the law for “attacking” the attackers?
To me, that is the true tragedy here. If I had been there (6’4″, 310 lbs, white), and forcibly stopped the attackers, I can’t help but believe that I would but put on trial in the media at least, and probably in a court of law.
If I had been armed with a lawfully concealed handgun, and brandished it to encourage the attackers to cease, I expect my punishment would be even more severe.

My thoughts exactly. I occasionally think of getting my concealed carry license, but I don’t want my name and address published (don’t want to be robbed or targeted politically). Actually, no. Had you been present, with a legal CCW, then your use of it — INCLUDING SHOOTING THE ATTACKERS — would likely have been legal.
As I understand it, the criteria are:
1) You (or the victim, if you’re defending a third party) did nothing to instigate or escalate the situation.
2) You (or the victim, if you’re defending a third party) attempted to get away from the situation, but was either incapable or not allowed to do so.
3) You had good reason to believe you (or the victim) were in imminent danger of serious bodily harm.
Now, I’m sure some of the crazier states (IL, NY, CA, WI) have different laws, but in most of the country, you’d be OK.
In California as I was told by my CCW Instructor, if your armed at the time of the attack your actually duty bound to act. Not doing so could open you up to both criminal and civil action.
Well, like California, Maryland is a “may issue” state, but instead of being done at the county level where sometimes sanity or corruption prevails and citizen can get a license it’s done at the state level and very few permits are given out. So if it indeed happened in Baltimore we should assume none of the witnesses were or could be legally armed.

To me thoes laws are designed to disarm the public not criminals. especially in the more waco states like the one i live in CA. its next to impossible to get one, yet its accurate to say that cali is overrrun with criminals. A few years ago in the upper West Coast, a young man tried to break up a fight and was piled on and killed by the onlooking mob. The racial makeup I will not divulge, except to say that the best the local newspaper could say was that the victim had been “trounced.”

That said, I wonder why this keeps happening. It’s hard to tell what sparked the incident, but the fact people stood around recording, but not helping,is becoming a trend. Then, instead of calling 911, it looked like McD’s employees where helping people get away before calling 911. I don’t even know where to begin… animals, dirtbags, and lowlifes all apply, but there is something else going on. It’s as if a segment of our population is devolving. I’ll be interested to see what others think is going on.

Just to note. A careful examination of the video lends evidence to the idea that the victim here is a man and the beating was prompted by his use of the ladies room.
At :28 seconds the black girls are screaming about how “That’s some f*cked up shit”.
At around 1:00 there is an exchange where the white victim asks “Where am I supposed to f*cking go then?” and they call he/r a sick b*tch, repetedly.
At 1:07 they return to beat he/r and that is when the white victim loses the long brown wig and has shorter blond hair.
At 1:25 some guy clearly says “That’s a man.”
Through the rest of the video there is hair across the restaurant towards the door and that is from the black girl’s weave.
The white victim is also much taller than not only both the black girls but also the black male manager.
None of that excuses anyone’s actions.

As of 10am, pacific, there’s almost no coverage on this story, online or on the news. I’d like to know how the victim is doing.
Everyone seems to think that the person taking the video is as much at fault as the perpetrators, which I can agree with at the point where he warns them to flee because the police are coming. For this he should be charged with obstruction. Aside from this, I think he provided an invaluable piece of evidence, that we wouldn’t have otherwise, that can hopefully be used to put these animals behind bars.
The videographer is not an innocent bystander. Most obviously, he aids and abeds by helping the attackers to flee the scene of the crime. Secondly, he’s encouraging them the whole way through by filming and by exclaiming.
Not to mention the fact that he very well could have been part of a premeditated plan to film this attack in a bid to make the attackers “internet famous”.
Let me be clear; I am in no way defending any of these animals, videographer included. My only point is that because he DID film it, we now have video of the attackers faces. I guarantee you that if it hadn’t been filmed, we’d be saying, “you mean with all these cameras we have on our phones nowadays, no one filmed the attackers?”
I’m glad that the police has faces to go after, and not just the standard, “a group of black girls” description.
Whatever the filmer’s motives, I hope his efforts are used against him and the attacker’s to the fullest.

Although I am not a big fan of the idea of hate crimes it’s clear there is a lot of criminal actions here and not just on the part of the two black girls. Another odd thing to note is in the description of the video on Liveleak. Everyone is identified by their sex except for the victim. Black females, blcak male manger, older white female. The victim is a “patron” and “victim” and the only indication that s/he may be female is the phrase “she has a seizure”.

If this had been a bar fight between men, the two who did all the beating would have spent at least a night in jail while the cops sorted out how the fight got started and the DA decided how severe the charges would be.

I recall watching a professional video of a man trying desperately to avoid being shot in front of an office building a few years ago; he was dodging back and forth behind a small tree while the camera kept rolling and the gunman kept shooting. Behind the gunman were other cameramen with great huge cameras that could have caved in his despicable head for him, if only someone had cared more about a human being than “doing his job” and “getting a scoop”.
Fortunately, something – I don’t recall what, police perhaps – stopped the attack before the gang of professional newsmen had a chance to get in a fantastic murder shot. Oh, what mighty heroes they were, daring to stay within thirty feet of a gun pointing the other way!

There actually is no affirmative duty to intervene where a crime is in progress. That’s the common law rule across the nation. So no, everyone in the video is not an accessory to a crime, unless they were encouraging the beating or in some way facilitating it. Failing to help the woman, while it may surprise some, is not a crime at all.

The video is an example of why I do not travel to any of the 12 states that do not permit me to carry a concealed weapon (HI, CA, OR, NV, WI, IL, SC, NY, NJ, MD, MA, RI).
For those wondering about whether brandishing a firearm to deter the attackers would be legal, the beating was apparently severe enough that the threat, and probably the use, of deadly force would be justified. However, Maryland is perhaps the most gun-phobic state in the nation, and I suspect that a bystander who used a firearm to save the victim would soon wish he hadn’t.
I’m surprised this is finally getting some news. My friend didn’t ask to me assaulted and the local police aren’t doing much except saying “it’s under investigation”. As far as I know no media has contacted her or visited the McDonalds to ask why everyone stood around and watched.

From what I saw in the video, the woman was just sitting at the door, then you see one of the women kick her again (you even hear a loud *BANG*), then she’s unconscious and gets a seizure.

I, as well as many other people have been wondering the same thing, but it just occurred to me, who cares? We want to know because we’re curious and there’s nothing wrong with that, but I don’t think it’d change how pissed off I am. At this point, who cares if they’re trangendered, those black girls acted like animals.

It is absolutely disgusting that several human beings are bystanders to a brutal assault on another human being. Our Concern Regarding the Baltimore Incident
We are shocked by the video from a Baltimore franchised restaurant showing an assault. This incident is unacceptable, disturbing and troubling. McDonald’s strives to be a safe, welcoming environment for everyone who visits. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of customers and employees in our restaurants. We are working with the franchisee and the local authorities to investigate this matter.
While McDonald’s is ‘working and investigating,’ avoid McDonald’s like the plague, nationwide. Their hiring practices enabled these African American racists only too willing to abet the racist cruelty displayed on the video.
Anyone know the Baltimore McDonald’s where this crime took place? I intend to notify all MD elected officials as well as local media outlets and ask why prosecution has yet to occur…

I don’t know where you’ve been or where you live or what you’ve seen in your life but these comments reflect a reality that one can no longer brush off as racism and it should never have been allowed in the first place given the behavior of black Americans in this country.
There is a monumental double standard within the U.S. with black folks; had this been white on black it would be all over every black website in America and mainstream talk shows too. Law enforcement would be all over it and so would Jesse Jackson, Tavis Smiley, Cornell West, Al Sharpton and every single black high profile advocate out there and the Congressional Black Caucus too.
You can find this type of behavior in the U.S. wherever there are concentrations of black folks. By contrast, in my 7 years in 17 Third World countries including places there is no law or infrastructure to speak of I have never seen even one time, not one time, behavior that I have seen from black people in public many, many times here – too many to count – and that is not counting crime statistics.

Don’t be so sure. I am certain he told police he was a woman but as the investigation continues it will probably be revealed that this is a man. The employess in the store can be heard refering to him as a man.

I agree that these animals should do some hard time, but I don’t agree that they should be charged with a hate crime. If anything this shows the absurdity of “hate crimes”. People should be judged by their actions not their beliefs. A crime shouldn’t have more importance or worse consequences because of the person’s beliefs, only their intent (when it can be proven) and actions actions should matter. “Hate crimes” are absurd and in a way it’d be nice to see the rules apply to EVERYONE, including blacks, for a change, but in reality they’re very unfair and should be done away with.

It has been confirmed. The victim in this attack is a man and it was over his use of the bathroom while the 2 girls were attempting to use it. There doesn’t seem to be any overt racial motives on behalf of the 2 attackers. The Smoking Gun has the details.
I have yet to see the video, but after reading multiple articles, I can only come to one conclusion. Other than the victim and 2 suspects, everyone else there were cowards or thugs. How would you feel if it was your child, mother, father, or you, and now you end up dead or disabled and you had a family, children, that you would either no longer see or be able to play with. I know I would want someone to help. In the Army and as a civilian, I would much rather be tried by 12 jurors, than carried by 6 to my grave. If you stand up for what it morally or ethically right, you will never go wrong. It might hurt a little, but in the end, you could save a life. For the 2 female attackers, they should have called the police if there was a problem. Now they will probably spend 2-10 years in jail if they are convicted unless the person that was beaten dies. Thats 2nd degree murder, now you’re looking at 20 years. Just my 2 cents.
