McConnell health care repeal strategy is beginning to emerge

Senator Mitch McConnell is a low key Senator who continues to surprise the Obama White House. Don’t let the low key demeanor fool you. He has kept his diverse caucus united, he is one of the most astute parliamentarians in the Senate, and a superb strategist.

Today after his caucus lunch, he launched a surprise attack on Obamacare, seeking to attach an amendment for the outright repeal of Obamacare on a reauthorization bill to the Federal Aviation Administration.  It puts  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on notice that Obamacare repeal probably will stalk Senate Democrats throughout the year.

In his comments today on his action, McConnell said his commitment to repeal the unpopular law was high on his agenda: “Shortly I will lay down an amendment to repeal Obamacare. We pledged to the American people that we would seek to repeal this 2,700-page bill that seeks to restructure all of American health care and put the decisions in Washington.

“I’m pleased to announce that all 47 of my members will be voting to repeal Obamacare.”

This is direct frontal challenge to Reid.  And in counting the votes, McConnell knows there will be wavering Democratic Senators from red states who will seriously consider voting for repeal.

This is not the last time you can expect repeal amendments to come up.  It is only the first.
