Will Venezuela Follow Ukraine?

February 22nd, 2014 - 10:05 am

Cuban troops

As the world focuses on the demonstrations and “Day of Liberation” in Kiev, as the oppressive regime in Ukraine has fled to areas in which they have support, events closer to the United States are also flaring up.

While the demonstrations against the leftist dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro continue in Venezuela, news has arrived that a new group of Cuban troops has arrived in Caracas to help the regime defeat the protestors.  As PJ Media contributor Alberto de la Cruz reports at Babalu, the anti-Castro website, these troops are in fact “simply joining the thousands of other Cuban soldiers already stationed in the Cuban pseudo-colony.”  Recently, Raul Castro threatened to unleash these troops to help the Maduro regime stay in power.

The situation in Venezuela is producing a serious opposition, which now includes both students and regular middle-class Venezuelans, as this report from Al Jazeera reveals. In the city of San Cristobal, where the protests began, Caracas Chronicles reports that many sections have fallen out of control of the regime.

The response of Maduro and his cronies, Reuters reports, is of the usual leftist variety: “Small fascist groups” are working in league with the United States to overthrow the government. Maduro is the same leader who recently told Venezuelans, Michael P. Moynihan writes, that he has seen Hugo Chavez appear to him in the form of a bird, as well as having spotted his ghost lingering in the Caracas subway. We know, of course, that this could not be true, since Maduro would no longer be caught dead in the subway — preferring to ride through his occupied capital in a bullet-proof car protected by his troops.

Last week, Maduro had the popular opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez arrested and thrown in jail, where he is awaiting trial on the charge that he has incited the crowds to riot, is guilty of homicide, and, finally, that he is a terrorist. We all know what the outcome of that trial will be. “The fascist right-wing,” Maduro told a crowd of organized supporters, is finally “in the hands of justice.” Maduro continued to tell his small rally that “we have been informed that the ultra-right wing of Venezuela, in tandem with the ultra-right wing of Miami, apropos the bench warrant, activated foreign groups to find and kill [Lopez] so as to fuel a political crisis and lead us to civil war.”

To translate: Maduro, whose regime has done everything to stifle a democratic opposition from being heard, including the recent murders of demonstrators by the regime’s police, is now claiming that they are in fact, by arresting Lopez, protecting him from the wrath of other of his fascist followers! Just like when Stalin had one of his agents assassinate Leon Trotsky, in exile in Mexico, by wielding an ice-ax to his skull, he was protecting the people from Trotsky’s supposed coming alliance with Hitler to overthrow Stalin’s workers’ paradise.

So far, the ranks of the American leftwing have been relatively silent, except for one voice, as you’ll see on the next page.

I found nothing on the website of The Nation, whose writers are seemingly too busy trying to find rationales for Putin’s attack on Ukraine. But fortunately, one voice was brave enough to defend Nicolas Maduro — the former member of Congress, Joseph Kennedy II.

Writing in the Wall Street Journal,  Sohrab  Ahmari notes that Kennedy is busy airing TV ads heralding Maduro for providing cheap subsidized fuel to the poor in the Bay Area, provided to Kennedy’s  corporation, Citizens Energy. “The cold can overwhelm even the toughest among us,” the ad states, “and the heating bills keep piling on.” Then Mr. Kennedy himself appears on screen, and says: “The people of Venzuela and President Maduro are once again…the only country to answer our call to provide heating assistance to the poor.” Given that Kennedy makes this statement precisely at the moment when demonstrators are being shot and the opposition leader jailed, Mr. Ahmari writes that Kennedy now has the distinction of being the most prominent “useful idiot” singing the praises of Maduro’s crumbling regime. I would modify that statement. The regime’s failings are so transparent that to praise it, as does Joseph Kennedy II, proves that he is actually simply an idiot, and hardly useful to anyone.

I await with bated breath the Obama administration’s unqualified vocal support to the brave Venezuelans who are calling for an end to the regime of  the would-be Castro of Venezuela.

"I await with bated breath the Obama administration’s unqualified vocal support to the brave Venezuelans..."

Komrad Obama is undoubtedly taking notes and learning from Maduro so he can use some of Maduro's tactics when the time comes. For example, stationing police at the hospitals so that when the injured are brought there they can be immediately arrested. I'm sure that when our Dear Leader heard this he exclaimed "Great Idea!"

Chavez cared not for the pobrecitos of New England. His only goal was to make his perceived American enemies look bad. He treated Venezuelan Oil like it was his own personal bank account to increase his own power. If I was a poor Venezuelan I would ask him why he was giving our precious resources to the richest nation earth? With the left, the issue is never the issue. The issue is always power. As such Patrick Kennedy was only too happy to have his country look bad. I suspect he preferred a partnership with the Venezuelan Socialists over the Texas Capitalists. It made narrative look better to say the capitalists turned him down. I have also learned the left will inevitably lie in order to romance up their story a little bit.

Maybe we could have an American Spring.

Nah. We have imbeciles here railing about the "Big Business right", how can we fight totalitarian leftism when we are surrounded by morons who fight the "free" in free market?

We are suffering the loss of freedom and liberty more and more each day and have to not only battle plan against tyranny of radical leftism, terrorism from radical Islamists...we have to battle the Buchanan/Ron Paul Jew-hating isolationist and idiot blamefest against successful military and business might and global influence.

We are in a triangulate pincer and if some people aren't influenced by the leftist tyrants...they are influenced by the Jew-hating froth of Buchanan/Ron Paul.

We are fighting a three flanked war. It's an existential threat. They are ALL the enemy, just different flavored.

Nothing makes Obama and his cabal happier than splitting us apart with the other two sides of the Sinister Triangle.

goodness gracious, who would have thought? one minor dictator dies, his successor flails about as a puppet on a string.
another dictator flees for his very life. while yet another mulls whether or not to seize the moment w/ his truculent armor/tanks, infuriating and perhaps awakening the world as to once quashed and long held intentions. still another powerful pawn prepares to attempt to take by force (and probably destroy) what can never be his. yet another lies in wait and prepares w/ armies beyond number.

is it just me or does it appear that the board is full of pieces and nearly set, with the deadly game about primed to begin? so the question is, who will move first into the fray?

the game? politics gone horribly wrong. the players? lesser men promoted far beyond reason or rhyme. the prize? a world burned beyond recognition, 500,000,000 left to carry on? isn't that the number written in stone?

are you scared yet? you should be.

PS - You won't find my previous comment. It was deleted by Radosh. He likes to toss out insults but proves thin-skinned when he's challenged.

I misspoke in my previous comment. Joe Kennedy's Citizens Energy does not only help the poor in the Boston area. It is a worldwide operation. Check it out:

Yep, as Radosh says, Kennedy is "an idiot, and hardly useful to anyone."

Secretary of State Kerry should immediately and publicly offer Nicolas Maduro and his immediate family political asylum in the US, PROVIDED, that Maduro transfer all his billions of dollars of personal assets to US jurisdiction.

While hoping that Venezuela will be next, I am looking to Turkey after new authoritarian laws introduced by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s government. How much more will the Turks take

Did the Kennedys not form a "non-profit" with the ostensible purpose of providing fuel to the poor by buying oil, refining it, and using the profits from their efforts to help the poor? How does the venture actually work, and how much do the Kennedys pay themselves to operate it? I don't think Joseph II is trying to badmouth the U.S. so much as he is protecting a meal ticket.

Now when Mr Lopez is gunned down, Maduro can claim that it was by Right Wing Infiltrators getting through the ring of protection that he supplied.

This is already true of the famous (in Venezuela) model who was killed by gunfire in a recent rally.

I have to admit to some confusion about this paragraph, especially the last sentence. Stalin's thug killed Trotsky in 1940. This was during the exact period that Hitler and Stalin already HAD an alliance - the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact or sometimes the Stalin-Hitler Pact - which began a week before Hitler launched his attack on Poland, an attack which was joined by the Soviet Union a few short weeks later. The Pact only ended with the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941.

Why would Stalin have rationalized killing Trotsky as necessary to forming a pact between Trotsky's followers and Germany when Stalin already had just such an agreement already in place?

I'm not saying this is incorrect, just that I don't understand it. I've read quite a few books on the Soviet Union and its history and, frankly, have never heard how Stalin rationalized this at the time. I'd be a little surprised if he even admitted to being behind it at the time, let alone trumpeted it from the rooftops. As far as I know, the actual assassin served his 20 year sentence without ever revealing who had ordered the hit. While there is now little doubt that Stalin ordered the killing, it's never been clear to me how obvious that was at the time. I'm sure Trotsky's followers accused Stalin of it since Stalin had persecuted Trotsky for years and even been implicated in the death of Trotsky's son a few years earlier. But how much did Trotsky's death get and who had ordered it get discussed in the West in 1940? I have to imagine it was overshadowed by other events, particularly WW II....

You know, when a lack of toilet paper incites unrest - something is seriously wrong. And that is both pitiful and tragic. God bless and keep the people of Venezuela safe tonight. B.O. is furiously trying to find it (aka: Venezuela) on Google Earth tonight between House of Cards episodes.
