When J Street Cries ‘McCarthyism!’
When J Street cries “McCarthyism,” you can be certain of one thing. They don’t have any good argument for the case they are presenting.
The person whom they charge with “McCarthyism,”– the familiar refrain of the Left used against anyone who makes an argument they disagree with — is Wall Street Journal columnist Bret Stephens. Last week he penned one of his most incisive and cutting weekly columns, a sharp critical take on President Obama’s claim that he can be depended upon to have Israel’s back.
He describes the president’s “disingenuousness when it comes to Israel.” He did it particularly well, more so than others. But what got J Street’s goat — on the eve of its national conference next week — was that he took information from the president’s major supporter, journalist Peter Beinart, who — as Stephens writes — was a liberal hawk “who has reinvented himself as a liberal scourge of present-day Israel and mainstream Zionism.”
He uses the figures Beinart brings up in his book — a group of “far left Chicago Jews” — as a group that was important to Obama as he developed views about the state of Israel. In his recent New Yorker editorial, David Remnick used the same group to make much the same point. Calling Obama a “philo-Semite,” he bases his judgement on what he says on the fact that his “earliest political supporters were Chicago Jews,” who Netanyahu thinks are “the wrong kind of Jew.”
Identifying them, he calls the late Rabbi Arnold Wolf a man “most closely associated with the civil-rights movement and other social-justice causes.” A good man, indeed. What irks Remnick and J Street is that in Stephens’ column, the WSJ writer calls Wolf something akin to the opposite. Rather than just a supporter of Martin Luther King, Jr., which is what Remnick calls Wolf, Stephens reports that he was a supporter of the extremist Black Panther Party in the 60s, a man whose group met with the PLO when it backed terrorism, and an opponent of building the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. Stephens went on to reveal that the other Jews on the list were all left-wing activists. In other words, the “kind of Jew” that American leftists all like.
So, what we see is that it is fine to single out these people when the list of their names can be used as a mechanism to praise Obama and to get American Jews to back him. It is not alright to use these same people’s names when their political views are more clearly brought to light, and are used to show the disingenuousness of Obama’s claim of having a pro-Israel point of view.

Oh, they drag out poor old McCarthy again. What were not xenophobic, homophobic, colonialist not available? Its typical Saul Alinsky tactics. Sling the mud at your opponents. Better yet, accuse them what you are actually doing. They do it all the time.
The resale value of your party is going to be nil.
There may be a modicum of ‘Great Truth’ to what you say….or maybe not….well then again, likely, keeping in mind your track record as far as truth and facts go, it could be the obverse to some half-baked scheme to get it all back in one roll, as we say at the ole Casino Royale. With some of your fellow travelers, the experience of truth as it relates to existence is not unlike the rapier-like shaft of sunlight sneaking under the shade, stabbing into the fish-eyed squint of one’s consciousness, bringing up with it some sour mash acidity and conservative mendacity from last night’s frivolities, along with the Southern Comfort and Crème’ de Menthe highballs, and you know how high yer balls can get with them things. Was that you showing the hostess how a blind man counts his change? It’s all gooper intellectual turgidity and terminal hangovers, hanging over dangling participles, hanging ten on the edge of a Niagara-like precipice of pedantic verbiage and Vedic arbitrage. I submit this for the award of “most useless post…ever” on any blog, ever.
Carl or Karl:
There may be a chance, albeit a slim one, that you know what you are obliquely referring to, without any reference to any facts, but I assure you, no one else does. I had to re-read your post twice just to make sure which side you were arguing against, and even now I am not sure, and I don’t know why you hold the unintelligible position you do, partly because I don’t know what it is. Not very persuasive, when you leave your readers in that position. Look up the word “cogent” in the dictionary. That might help next time.
Based on that I wholeheartedly second the motion of P Jay Medilla, 100% and more. Kudos to you P Jay, and well said.
Hey Karl, old buddy, another flashback, huh? Toldja years ago that LSD wasn’t gonna make ya happy in the future. Bummer.
And while McCarthy was crude, there really were (and still are) communists in the State Department.
Actually, the last guys we caught working for Mother Russia were employed by the CIA, FBI, and US Navy. If you have evidence or information otherwise, let’s see your sources. Oh, and let’s not forget Pollard, who was with the Navy before he was with Israel….or was that the other way around???
You don’t have to work for Russia to be a communist.
We started doing this to our selves long time ago.
You are correct about the Communists, but I don’t believe you’re correct about him being crude. I knew a friend of his who died a couple of years ago. Joe was born and raised in a small city a few miles from here. She told me that he had the biggest funeral ever seen in that city and almost every Senator attended it. Crude men seldom have that many friends but yet all those men attended not because he was a Senator but because he was a friend of theirs. That is what she told me and I have no reason to disbelieve her.
Obama’s promises to Netanyahu put me in mind of an amusing joke I came across yesterday. It was listed under Jewish humor, and the site’s author was Jewish so I’ll take his word for it.
“How do you say ‘F— You’ in Modern Hebrew?”
“Trust Me.”
So is McCarthyism the new racist. I need to stay current on my invectives.
Another TSA Video that should make your blood boil — It appears the TSA hates mothers who breast feed their babies. All of this TSA garbage are test cases. Once they get away with this, they will escalate their tyranny. All of US are being conditioned. My God, I don’t see a soul forming massive protests over this unconstitutional garbage. Until we the people stand up against this tyranny, it will only get worse!.

A few years ago I was telling my in-laws who live on the North Shore of Chicago about my recent trip to Israel.
They wondered why I wanted to go there and spend time with people they were familiar with as Jews…ie the
Chicago pedigree the Prime Minister was talking about. I assured them most of the Jews we came across on our trip actually practiced their faith and loved the land God set apart for them.
the group has another concern…what they say is the campaign to “delegitimize President Obama.”
Obama delegitimized himself as president long ago.
“… the disingenuousness of Obama’s claim of having a pro-Israel point of view.”
Absolutely right! Did you know that he even refused to put the US military under Israeli command. And according to PJM, his attorney general, “Eric Holder Supports the Al-Qaeda Vote.” Impeach!
>>“Eric Holder Supports the Al-Qaeda Vote.”<<
Orwell coined the phrase, "Objectivly pro-facist." Get it now?
I always enjoy reading Bret Stephens’ columns. So now on top of incisive erudite analysis he has actually annoyed the Obama-sycophants of JStreet. This definitely adds to my enjoyment.
J Street; the lost tribe of Isreal, deservedly. There are the ignorant, who just don’t know, and then there are the willfully ignorant, who look reality in the eye, and pretend not to see it. J Street represents the ultra-liberal left wing assimilated Jew, accustomed to a cushioned life, safely ensconced with the Washington bubble, generations removed from the ugly reality of the Holocaust, who believe that we are, i.e. us Jews, are safely beyond that. Noble idealists. great visionaries, the vanguard of a brave new world. It never fails to amaze me, in my professional life, how some people actually mamnaged to survived to adulthood.
Obama is a true friend of Israel. Obama has Israel’s best interest at heart. Obama is committed to the survival of Israel. You have the Reverend Wrights, Louis Farrakhan and Bill Ayers word on that. What more could you ask????
Only mistake here is assuming that J Street is Jewish. LAst I heard, no-one really knew who they were; there were even Iranians involved.
J-Street is destroying Israel from without, and the New Israel Fund from within.
More partisan outrage from the left. And as usual, other than expressing the outrage and making personal attacks, they do not address the substance of the issue.
Actually, the most egregious examples of modern-day McCarthyism I’ve seen in recent years are the tactics of the left, most particularly those abetted by the Obama Administration. It’s become such a ubiquitous practice, I think we need to replace “McCarthyism” with a new name. I nominate “Obamalinskyism”. Any other suggestions?
How about “Chamberlainism,” Rebecca? McCarthy was quickly emasculated by Eisenhower and the Senate and never killed or jailed anyone, and his exposure of communists led nowhere compared to Nixon in the Senate and HUAC in the House. Neville Chamberlain’s stupidity at Munich, which he trumpeted as “Peace in our Time” which gave Churchill the guffaws, killed 50 million or more and enabled Hitler to pursue the worst pogrom in history, which can be laid directly at Neville’s yellow feet. As usual the left is misled by the wrong and mostly meaningless historical precedent. I am not wishing it, but we will see how Obama’s hand is played out in real time, unless we get the adults back in office before anything irreversible happens. Certainly Hitler laughed at Chamberlain and all the others he lied to. Plenty have laughed at Obama since he went from do nothing Law Review Editor to do nothing community organizer to do nothing pretend author, to do nothing senator to do nothing mouthpiece for the American Republic. It may be the fact that Historically, Neville Chamberlain will be regarded as a gimlet eyed genius compared to our present President.
Ever hear of “Wag the Dog”? Obama’s version is “Wag The Jews”. This
basically means when hardcore leftists who hate Israel, vehemently profess
to have Israel’s back, only because a U.S. Presidential Election is
approaching. Once the election is over, win or lose, Obama will go back
to his Pro-Palestinian position.
How does this man have a 41% approval rating?
If you are referring to the Washington Post/CBS poll, or any MSM poll then note that they are traditionally left biased. It’s anyone’s guess what the real numbers are.
Rabbi Wolf for all of his faults was outed by Yale after his tenure for his exposé of the entrenched antisemitism there. I sent many hours in the very same libraries and study rooms at UC and HUC. Pre-google old school stuff.
J Street is blowing away like last leaves after the snowmelt. Where are they when southern Israel was drenched by over 200 rockets this week? Even Israeli left is on top of this. Tzipi gets to lecture Netanyahu for not hitting hard enough. J Street is not even on the map anymore.
I do not hate lefties nor the Rabbi z”l. I just wish they would fight as hard when the katyushas are falling. There is reponsibilty to protect and defend am yisroel.
If you’d check the J Street website you would know where they were — and when.
J Street Responds to Recent Violence Between Israel, Gaza
March 11, 2012 at 11:41 am
WASHINGTON—J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami today issued the following
statement in response to the most recent outbreak of violence between the
Israel Defense Forces and militants in Gaza, which began on Friday.
“J Street is deeply concerned about the most recent spate of violence
between the Israel Defense Forces and militants in Gaza.
We condemn the rocket fire on Israel and unequivocally support Israel’s
right to protect its citizens from attack. Our thoughts are with the
civilians on both sides whose lives are once again besieged by the
consequences of the unresolved conflict.
We urge all involved to exercise maximal restraint and we call on Israeli,
Palestinian, American and international leaders to take bold steps to
diplomatically resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The way to address
outstanding grievances is by achieving a two-state solution, not by
escalating violence. The majority of Israelis and Palestinians recognize
that a two-state solution is the only means to achieve true peace and
security.
Particularly in the absence of a meaningful diplomatic process between
Israelis and Palestinians, such an escalation has the demonstrated capacity
to engage other actors and enflame already heightened tensions in the
region as a whole. We urge the United States and all members of the Quartet
to make brokering a ceasefire an immediate priority, in word and in deed.”–
“Obamalinskyism- the modern political practice of old school leftist radicalism”, “tatics used to embarrass and humilate political opponents by lining up endless parades of straw men”, “Updated rules for Radicals as perfected by the Obamunist party”, “to claim the opposite of an intended political goal in order to fool the bitter clingers”, ie, “We must pass the bill to find out what is in it”, “never letting a crisis go to waste”, “always accusing a political opponent of the very stategery being implemented by Obamunistas”, “faux indignation and self righteous claims to smaller entitlements for a few at the expense of larger liberties for all”.
Intended reply to RebeccaH post#12, nicley coined!
The guilt by association argument is being used by liberals in an ignorant way, as for example the Derrick Bell-President Obama dust up. It’s clear they share the same philosophy on race in America and so that is a willful and conspicuous association, not the dumb argument on the Left that Obama hugged Bell.
When turned around the Left loves the argument they hate, considering anyone in the Tea Party or GOP to be de facto racists because white supremacists, a clear marginalized minority in America, are not liberals generally speaking.
Just saying “blah” or “food stamp President” is code for I’m a card carrying member of the KKK. But the YWCA co-sponsors billboards that say “It’s hard to see racism when you’re white,” an argument where the Left has deftly figured out a way via the clever argument of “white privilege” that association isn’t everything, skin is, except when it’s other than white skin, and then it’s not.
If you’re having trouble following this line of thought welcome to the party that comprises the centerpiece of the racialist Dem Party, where a thing is whatever they point to and say it is at that moment and goose/gander is some weird, useless and incomprehensible philosophy only to be found in nature and professional sports.
It was the usual scene at UCLA, Apartheid Week. I wall was put up. Students were stopped at “Check Points”. Groups of Students were acting out getting shot by Israeli soldiers.
My son joined the counter demonstration with flag, finger, and all. A J Street Jew came over to talk to him, “Don’t you believe in a two State solution?” My son pointed out to him,”You better go0 back and talk to the people over there not us.” The demonstrators were chanting, “From the river to the sea, all of Palestine will be free!”
Enough said.

‘…“McCarthyism,”– the familiar refrain of the Left used against anyone who makes an argument they disagree with….’
Pssst! Obama hugged a radical when he was in grad school — pass it on!
Anyone who does not vote to re-elect President Obama is biased. A vote against President Obama, this November, is an act to delegitimize the president.
Think about it.
I expect to hear a lot more along these lines in the coming months. I am reminded of the politician who gained election by accusing his opponent (apparently accurately) of being a “thespian.”
Obama has Israels back….I pray to Almighty G-d that Mr Bibi Netanyahu is sharp enough to see thur this ….I fear That Israel has been promised a plum pudding if they will hold off action until this evil man of perdition gets reelected…Surely Mr. Bibi can see thur this “Jive Ass Chicago street hustle”, by the Master of deceit,I cannot properly write his name…Forgive me for losing my cool on this site, My Bible tells us to “be angry and sin not”…
J Street is just a front created by Soros funded lefties. They are failing and this McCarthy stuff is nonsense conspiracy crap.
They do not represent American Jews and never defend Israel.
The door is still open for two state negotiated solution. That dream has been rejected by Palestinians since Oslo. Israel is not the problem here. Anyone with two neurons and a synapse can see that.
So given lack of long term solution next best thing is deal with short term problems.
Really what do these people want? Defending Iran seems to be the focus now for the J Street crowd.
That will fail as well.

REVISED: J Street Responds to Recent Violence Between Israel, Gaza
[Please note the original statement misstated the number of civilian casualties. We regret the error and issued the following revision.]
WASHINGTON—J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami today issued the following statement in response to the most recent outbreak of violence between the Israel Defense Forces and militants in Gaza, which began on Friday.
“J Street is deeply concerned about the most recent spate of violence between the Israel Defense Forces and militants in Gaza.
We condemn the rocket fire on Israel and unequivocally support Israel’s right to protect its citizens from attack. Our thoughts are with the civilians on both sides whose lives are once again besieged by the consequences of the unresolved conflict.
J Street Responds to Ongoing Rocket Fire on Southern Israel
March 12, 2012 at 3:12 pm
WASHINGTON—J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami issued the following statement in response to ongoing rocket fire on southern Israel from Palestinian militants in Gaza:
“With southern Israel under a fourth day of intensive rocket fire from Palestinian militants in Gaza, J Street reiterates its condemnation of those firing rockets from Gaza at civilian population centers in Israel. We further express our deep concern for the citizens of southern Israel.
The renewed rocket fire from Gaza is simply intolerable, and we call on the broader world community to make clear to these extreme Palestinian militants that they must cease fire immediately.
J Street staunchly supports Israel’s right to defend and protect its citizens, and this includes acting to thwart terrorists planning or executing attacks.
At the end of the day, the level of violence will only subside when the underlying conflict between the Israeli and Palestinian peoples is resolved.
We urge the parties, the United States and the Quartet to put resolving this conflict back at the forefront of the international agenda. Inaction only increases the chance that flare-ups of violence could explode into a broader conflict that serves no one’s interests at a time of heightened regional tensions and instability. “
Of course, we all are thankful for the reported success of Israel’s Iron Dome anti-rocket defense system. It seems that dozens of lives, if not more, were saved by the Iron Dome batteries.
Of course, we are all thankful to President Obama for pushing for an additional aid package of $205 Million (in this time of budget fights, no less) specifically to purchase 4 additional Iron Dome batteries.
I have one very quick question for Mr. Radosh and all on this site:
I assume that we all believe in maintaining Israel as the democratic homeland of the Jewish people. Is that correct?
It worked before again again and again. That McCarthy hearings uncovered evidence for what McCarthy suspected of no importance when the word trained into world’s populations by the “liberal” media is used. As with that other liberal knee-jerk boo -hiss word Watergate.
Chappaquiddick only kept E. Kennedy from THE highest office, NOT from becoming the most powerful Senator throughout his life to enable his destructive aims on the USA, but that word is rarely seen anymore. And would probably be meaningless to many in the world today.
Is it just accident that the “liberal” media,as kingmaker in addition to Messiah dubbed Obama the New Kennedy? Just signalling the triumph of the aims initiated in Chicago 1960?
No universal opprobrium for the “pillar” of “the blue dress”. Just snickering admiration at the witty defense of his law breaking – Not his sexual peccadilloes -
by this highest law officer in the land.
Prototye for left/democrat/liberal officers of the nation? Obama/New Kennedy/Messiah and his ?Tsars?
Try and convince a major institutional investor to sell off all shares in: Apple, Microsoft, Motorola, Cisco, Intel, Northrop Grumman, GE, Boeing, Raytheon, Caterpillar, Teva Pharmeceuticals, AOL Time Warner, Home Depot, Disney, Coca-Cola, Nokia, McDonalds, Danone, The Limited, and Johnson & Johnson. All companies with major ties to Israel.
The cultural boycott is also a total fail. This year Israel will host concerts by Madonna, Lady GaGa, Bruce Springstein, The Scorpions, Guns n Roses, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I think they can do without Elvis Costello. Wouldn’t it be a gas if Lady GaGa performed in Ramallah or Madonna in Gaza?
In agriculture the movement only hurts Palestinian farmers who often export under Israeli brands. That is a worthy area where greater cooperation with Israeli agricultural and water management technology would result in increased yields and profit. But these folks are not interested in helping the Palestinian economy.
Even the hateful Norman Finkelstien has denounced the BDS movement as a cult. It keeps the useless idiots busy helping nobody. If they wanted to help Palestinians they would encourage the Palestinian economy which certainly needs investment. How about putting money into a Palestinian software startup or in better energy and agricultural water systems? Nobody could object to that.
They do not want to help Palestinians. They feel better if they do not wear Victorias Secret underwear (The Limited) or drink Yarden or Barkan wine. The wine, by the way, is getting very good and competes well with many other brands in my local grocery.
There are many more people who want to support Israel than there are BDS idiots. It is not a sacrifice to buy Israeli products or invest in Israeli or Israel related companies.
