The Veterans Scandal: Socialized Medicine on Trial

May 22nd, 2014 - 9:46 pm

Many have wondered about Barack Obama’s prolonged silence concerning the disastrous situation at the Veterans Administration hospitals and then his odd detached demeanor (well, maybe not that odd for him) when he finally did discuss it at a press conference.

The answer is simple.  His lifetime dream of a free public (single payer) healthcare system for all just disintegrated in front of him. Forget the wildly ambitious and pervasive “Affordable Care Act,” the government couldn’t even handle the health of our wounded servicemen, acknowledged for years to be by far the group most deserving of medical attention in our country.  With veterans dying while waiting lists are falsified, it’s hard to see government healthcare as anything but incompetent, disgraceful and quite possibly criminal.

Government has failed utterly.  Does anyone have any doubt that Halliburton or even the dreaded Koch brothers could have better handled the health of our wounded warriors? Probably almost any business would have.  There at least would have been some accountability. (It’s interesting to see the quaint Bernie Sanders, the one self-described socialist in the Congress, as opposed to the closeted ones, being the most outspoken defender of VA malfeasance and urging us not to “rush to judgement” on a three page bill.)

But it’s not just healthcare, although it’s certainly prominent, important and symbolic.  The Obama administration has been the best advertisement for libertarianism across the board in recent memory.  Government can’t handle anything, not even the one thing it should handle, the common defense. (It better get it together on that one with Russia and China making a new alliance that might be stronger and more powerful than ever.)

Although I am retired from a career in the USAF, I have had no experience with VA health care and knew little about it. What I just found out surprised me, and makes the criticisms Roger brings up even worse.

The VA sent me a package to apply, saying that I might be eligible. And it turns out that they employ means testing to determine benefits. Even if you are retired from a military career, you are required to state your income and total financial resources available.

The only exceptions are veterans with service-connected disabilities, those who served in Southeast Asia, and a few other specific situations. Simply having served, even for a full career, is not enough.

So these outrages were committed not "merely" against military veterans but against those who are the least able to have other recourse for health care.

I DO know that blacks are doing horribly under this administration. That women are worse off and the young are being destroyed.

HIS base...EVERY SINGLE KEY ELEMENT...except for government workers and PARTY flunkies....much worse off.

Anyone who loves Israel? Has to have a crushed spirit.

Aggressive atheism and Islam are stronger.

So, essentially...Workers Party, small c communists and the Muslim Brotherhood, border crashers, gang bangers and violent criminals are doing better in Obama's Transformed America.

Everyone else...is being royally screwed.

I don't know, Roger.

Most older generation patriots are the very people Bill Ayers wanted to eliminate, at a number of 25 million.

Didn't the leftists announce that they were going to "let us die"?

What better way to "attrition out" the stubborn bitter clingers? So that they could be replaced by the indoctrinated, imported and indentured.

Woodstock Scumbags weren't just congregating in Benghazi.

Single payer, yes. But dual purpose as well.

Will this kill socialized medicine? Wouldn't bet on it.

The Democratic party successfully convinced the country that it was fighting for women. Just to rub people's faces in it, the convention was headlined by a rapist and molester.

If they could get away with that, they could get away with anything.

PS - I recall a discussion at my (rather conservative) grade school, over forty years ago. The teacher and the class were all talking about how we need socialized medicine, and I recall trying to say, "wait a minute...". Oh, I'm sorry, it must be because Obama is Black.

Saw on FNC a VA doctor who is a whistleblower; she's a psychiatrist.

She said that, completely aside from however long it took one of her patients to get a visit, she was distressed that after their first visit it would sometimes be 3 or 4 weeks or more before their second one. She said that was worse than not seeing them at all, to just have one visit, give them some drugs, and seemingly abandon them.

What she did not explain was why. Was it because she really was booked up solid with appointments? Or was she spending a lot of time time in staff meetings, or writing evaluations of the clerical staff, or planning the organization annual picnic, or the many other things that Federal workers typically have to do?

Or, worst of all, were there empty spots on her schedule that could have been utilized for appointments but the scheduling was just too screwed up?

I hope we hear more details of that kind.

The VA has the best health outcomes of all health plans in the US. Medicare, which is managed by the government, has 90% approval.

Anyone who thinks a health system managed by the Koch ghouls would be better than the VA has their head lodged far up in that region where the sun don't shine.

But we now know that those outcomes were based on false statistics.

So other than the vets dying because they got stuck forever on one of the fraudulent secret waiting lists, the VA is just great. Do you media matters people really think we are going to believe that garbage.

As a vet I go to the VA, its very close and very convenient. I have heard of mistreatment of veterans at other hospitals [form newspapers] but never in the one that I go to, they do it right. It surprises me that so many died at the Phoenix Hospital with John McCain being one of the Senators from that state, McCain must really be clueless if he missed that one. My VA Hospital must be a an anomaly in a sea of malfeasance, hard to believe that I'm pleased with the treatments and Doctors, the whole operation of the hospital has been done well and if it wasn't I know where my elected officials live.

What I have heard is once you get by the waiting lists and get an actual appointment, the treatment is fairly good. Maybe your area did not have a lot of vets in relation to the slots in the hospital, and thus was meeting the demand, without having to fake it with the fraudulent secret waiting lists, like the VA hospitals in the scandal.

Ron - I also picked up on the McCain angle. As a US Senator, a lot of his constituents must've written him for help with the VA. It looks like he ignored the problem until the TV cameras were present. As a vet, I thank you for you service to the country, congratulate you for not having a VA problem and remind you of the old saw: A conservative is a liberal who's been mugged. That is, just because you don't have a problem doesn't mean others aren't.

WHY ADMIT FAILURE WHEN YOU CAN HIDE IT?
Isn't that what every bureaucracy does? Hide its ineptitude, incompetence and mistakes.

It's almost as if those VA bureaucrats keeping ill vets off the waiting lists for doctors were acting as a death panel, huh?

Oh Puhleeeze! Just because they see the socialist dream corroding and falling to ashes around them THIS year, you want us to believe that it matters at all to the true believers. Stalin, Mao, Khmer Rouge, Ho, Hollande.... how many times? Once again, it has just been a failure of intellect to detect all the problems up front. NEXT time they'll do better!!!

The process is the problem and conservatives better wake up to that. When a worker, someone who spends their time dedicated to another's vision, gets their income reported by a W2 (wage slaves) or a 1099-MISC for contractors, there is no equivalent for the worker (of dole lines) when they get their welfare, Medicaid, section 8 housing support, free AC in summer/heat in winter, free bus far, children's free breakfast, lunch, and dinner at school...it goes on and one.....

Where is the 1099-GOV? Where's the fair there?

Good point. Socialists never concede defeat or error, no matter how obvious. They always blame the failure of their utopian scheme on hoarders and wreckers. Show trials for the saboteurs follow and then they are shot. We can expect an attenuated version of the same from Obama, where the blame is passed to individual bureaucrats, who are blamed, rather than blame the dysfunctional system which prompted them to cheat to make it work.

the VA is not the problem the management is. the individual workers at the VA are dedicated caring and serve the needs of the veterans. the Management on orders from on high are the reason for the delays the list of those that will not be served are done for the political reasons that Obama has intending to ruin the nations the VA and Military
are just a part of his agenda.

It's the system, not the managers. In a socialist system, cheating is the only way for managers to show progress.
