But that’s no reason to spend any press/reporting time on a minor instance of possible minor cocaine usage that goes on throughout the world a skillion times a day. [Aren't you doing just that?-ed. Yes, but hear me out.] Everyone knows we are living in a celebrity culture that overwhelms us even as we are fascinated by it. It’s time to make a conscious effort on all our parts to diminish it. I’m not talking about Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton (etc.) obsession. Curing that is in the realm of the hopeless. Besides, people like Spears and Hilton encourage the endless and tedious publicity they receive. But the obscure peccadilloes of private citizens should remain just that – obscure. And make no mistake about it, Joseph Biden’s daughter (name deliberately omitted) is a private citizen. She has never, to my knowledge, invited any significant attention to herself. Indeed, we don’t know if she ever wanted her father to do the same. Let’s leave her alone – and her father as well, on that score.

I was thinking along the lines of Pops but silly me, only considered Bush in the “what if.” Had it been Bristol Palin, the bidding war for the video would be in frenzy mode, a special event at Sotheby’s. The image of Andrew Sullivan waving the bid paddle is a bit scary, though.
And don’t forget “Mary Cheney is fair game” from 2004. Republican leaders deserve much of the blame for their recent demise. However, they also have had to face the uphill battle of trying at least sometimes to have a sense of shame in what has become a shameless and coarse society.
Perhaps if we make as big a stink about Biden’s daughter as we’ve seen Democrats make of Republican children (not hypothetical but actual cases like the Bush daughters, Mary Cheney, and Palin’s kids), they’d be less likely to trash our kids. I doubt it, though. There’s no level too low to go to when a Democrat is trying to make a political point.

Ashley Biden is 27 years old, an adult in her own right – far from dependent minor. She’s had run-ins with the law before, a case where she was charged with obstructing a police officer. She has actively campaigned for her father, and apparently is regarded as a political player. So if she screwed up with cocaine, it is news, and she should be treated as the adult she is.
That being said, there’s zero evidence that the tape is legitimate. Just rumors, that’s all. For that reason, if no other, this story is garbage and deserves to be ignored.

It seems that this video does not hurt Joe Biden politically, he has long been working above his competence level, and I marvel at how far he has come. However, as someone mentioned earlier, it gives him a different perspective on the war on drugs. It also takes the fear of someone bringing it out in the open. If this situation is true, then perhaps his family will need to deal with this and not look the other way.
Politicians and the press have been playing dirty for a long time. I read the book on John Adams by David McCullough a while back, and felt reassured that our political system is the same as it always was.

This is one of those things that’s tough to call. On the one hand, I agree with Roger: this is stupid to report on. On the other, Bristol Palin’s boyfriend’s mom got busted for drugs, and *that* made the news. Essentially, we’re fighting the VietNam War now, with the VC using Cambodia as a sanctuary we’re not supposed to enter. Surrogates do everything from leak the divorce records of Obama’s opponents in his Senate race to hacking Sarah Palin’s emails, and while Democrats deplore what’s happening, they gleefully benefit from the results that are leaked. If anyone does it to a Democrat, he’s automatically connected to whichever Republican candidate needs to be defeated right now. It’s a sort of mine-is-mine, but yours-is-negotiable scheme, and frankly the negotiations aren’t going very well for us, either. We either need to find a way to fight back, and keep them from breaking the rules with our candidates, or we need to find a way to hit back at them in kind. Either that, or we’re the party of permanent minority.

But, Joe Biden *doesn’t* agree. See, he thinks that it’s okay, even good, for police to knock down the doors of drug users and throw them in jail.
So now his position is one of two possibilities. He can stand by his beliefs and subject his daughter (if she’s actually doing what the video suggest, if the video exists) to the full fury of the criminal justice machine that he helped create. Or, he can go the McCain route and be a complete hypocrite, claim that it’s a “private” matter and make it obvious to the folks who haven’t caught on yet that drug laws are really only for poor people, mainly those who aren’t white.

Here we have the daughter of a man who has spent much of his congressional career creating laws which have ruined the lives of countless people just like her, have contributed to the wild expansion of our prison population and perpetuated the destruction of civil liberties and property rights (you should read some of Biden’s proposals). This is a man who has no problem ruining the life of your daughter or your son, over what this woman did.
She should be arrested, prosecuted under the worst drug laws and sentenced to a 20-30 year sentence like tens of thousands of people, especially black men, get every year under laws that Biden helped to create or actually wrote. It is only fitting that she fall on the sword that her father has used to damage so many lives and undermine American civil liberties. It is only fitting that he should have to watch as his daughter is subjected to the same sort of penalties that this callous, self-righteous son of a bitch has no problem inflicting on others.

I see your point but.. it’s also the kind of small-scale cocaine use that gets a lot of people entangled with the justice system in such a way that they ultimately spend years in prison. There’s a serious double standard here, and I think it’s worth pointing out. I have some qualms about it- I’m not crazy about Biden, but I have nothing against his daughter, and it can’t be much fun to have this aired so publically. But it is probably also a lot less unpleasant than spending a few years behind bars.
Let me be clear: the media treatment of Palin and her family was reprehensible and living proof, if we needed more, that modern liberalism has become completely reactionary. As for Andrew Sullivan, whatever respect I had for him – intellectually and morally – disappeared long ago.
But that does not mean Biden’s daughter needs to be vilified. There are many more useful things to talk about.

The rules I learned were no different from mafia Rules (I learned from the Queens and Tammany Democratic Party Machines) — the Old rule was to leave the families alaone. Tip O’neill never went after Nancy Reagan and Rostonkowski opposed but respected the office.
The last 8 years, the rules changed. I switched in 1992, and I am appaled. Olbermann goes after a charity because O’reilly is speaking? Has he no shame?

Here’s the thing about this whole debate: Pres. Obama openly admitted to using illegal drugs (including cocaine.) Doesn’t that make him a criminal, too? What about Michael Phelps?
I used to work in a state prison here in Kentucky. I can attest from personal experience with many of the inmates there that the draconian drug laws in this country need to be relaxed because they cause more harm than the drugs themselves (in most cases.)
Have a look at the civil war raging in Mexico right now. If marijuana were decriminalized, the drug cartels would likely collapse because it is their main export to the US. Believe me, we could grow our own weed here.

When the media stops their feeding frenzy on the Palin family is when they should also stop reporting about Biden’s daughter. Will that be the 12th of Never?
Obama could have and should have taken the high road and reminded the press that families were off limits but if he did, then perhaps people would have been able to actually review Palin’s record, her common sense governing of Alaska, heard her messages of drill for energy independence, no earmarks if we can’t afford them, less government, oh, well, Then, we would have realized Obama had never run anything – which is obvious by his actions today. Bet Michelle paid the bills in the family since he doesn’t have a clue how American families need to budget. Perhaps he believes going really socialist will solve the problems. We are in such a mess that worrying about Biden’s daughter – or Micheal Phelps – is the least of our worries.

Ummm… I assume this ‘line’ of being ‘set up’ is an excuse floated by her parents? Yep, that ol’ ‘de debble made me do it”, favoured throughout the schoolyards of the nation.

Fearless prediction: At most, one person will end up being prosecuted when the dust settles. It won’t be Ashley Biden.
Remember, Ashley got away clean after her 1999 marijuana arrest in New Orleans, too.

However, the Left got away with attacking the palin family. Turning the other cheek only allows the Left to burn the ground we are on.
I await the day that any Liberal or Leftist stands up and says that either Sullivan, Olbermann, or Hartmann are beyond the pale.
Until they do, we have to respond. I believe in kind, until they learn not to get to that level ever again. I used to be a Democrat and I learned earlty that families are sacrosant.
Until I see someone from the left standing up for the palin’s, I belive they must reap the whirlwind.
Regardless of media obsession, and propriety, the real question is, did she ingest cocaine or not?
Imagine this had been a Bush twin, or a child of any other conservative.
So here we are nearly 3 months away from this incident,and amazingly the story only took 3-4 days to completely disappear.Yet MSNBC is still reporting every fart and burp it can dredge up Palin’s daughter & ex-boyfriend.
I agree and could care less about Ashley Biden’s habits…but the media double standard sickens me daily.
