When I read the following email, I clicked posthaste on the link to sign the petition. (I don’t think I’ve ever been number 4 on a petition before, but the outrage was immediate. I think when you read it, you will want to sign too. But if by some remote chance you dither, remember this video of the man our Navy has seen fit to celebrate. But read the email first. That should suffice.)

Congressman John Murtha was recently awarded the Department of the Navy’s highest public service award for non-employees by the Secretary of the Navy. This is an outrage. As you probably know, John Murtha has been the worst of a bad lot in Congress who exploited those serving in combat for political purposes. He was the most outspoken member of Congress in aggressively attacking Marines as “cold blooded killers” who “murdered women and children” after the Haditha incident in November, 2005, BEFORE AN INVESTIGATION WAS EVEN CONDUCTED. In fact, he slandered the Marines to such an extent, and with such disregard for the truth, that one of them sued him for libel (rumor says there’s another libel suit to come soon). It is inconceivable that the Secretary of the Navy would give such an award to such a man, yet it happened not two weeks ago with muted response. I have created an online petition to express our outrage and disgust and I’m asking you to join me in signing it. Please use the link below to visit the petition and sign it; it will take less than two minutes. Additionally, please send it on to everyone you know who cares about the reputation of our active duty military and combat veterans, we can’t allow this to pass by unnoticed. I was also shocked by this. I manage a distribution list for the Navy Patrol Squadron I served in more than 50 years ago, and for the first time I used that list to promote a “political” position by sending a link to this petition to the group. Knowing the attitudes of my former shipmates, I don’t think I’ll get much negative feedback from them!
As a retired career Naval Officer, I am so sorry to see the U.S. Navy’s good name linked to this travesty. Over 700 signatures by the time I signed. I’m guessing the politically appointed SecNav was told to do this by his left-wing masters.
John Murtha’s loyal constituents should be deeply ashamed of themselves. They repeatedly cast their votes for him regardless of his misbehavior. And Murtha’s political survival is a quintessential example of many voters’ hypocritical attitudes toward earmarks. The Pennsylvania congressman remains in office because he so superbly brings home the bacon. The majority of his supporters could care less about anything else.

These things don’t happen by themselves–someone, somewhere started the process. It would be nice if some “journalist” somewhere did a little investigating. Thanks for the petition. I signed as soon as I read about it. I am # 5077. two brothers served in the Navy ahnd one in the Army. his remains are still in Korea. Doing my best toget thisresoved but no luck so far. Murtha is a disgrace.
Signed, looks like it’s closing in on 6000 soon. Looking at some of the signature pages shows a lot of vets are signing, as well as some active duty and family members.
The Navy lost my respect by wasting such an ‘honor’ on such a poor excuse for a veteran.

I signed too. My dad served in the Navy in World War II. Now he is a man worthy of honor. I am very lucky.
Murtha should have been jailed after Abscam. A lifetime of corruption.
The problem I see is that Murtha is just the worst example of why Congress is so bad. Neither party seems willing to go after the various abusers like Murtha. His career shows no evidence of any real ability other than moving budget dollars to his district and winning elections. The system reinforces his bad behavior. (And don’t even get me started on Charlie Rangel, Bawney Fwank, and John Conyers.)

Thank you, Roger. During Vietnam, I served in various intelligence operations. I saw first hand the difference between real warriors and politicians in uniform. The latter, like Murtha and Kerry, were always a disgrace to the uniforms they wore. Murtha has no honor and he probably initiated the award for himself, a la Kerry. Disgusting. Just disgusting.
The treatment of the veterans has been poor. As a Vietnam era Navy vet, I saw it then and see it now. This man is part of the political process that sends our soldiers to war and then treats them as if they were criminals or trash. He lacks honor.

Funny how Murtha became a lightening rod for people outraged at those trials. Congress does not run military court martials. I guess it’s easier to hold an anti-war Democrat Congressman responsible for an Executive Branch action instead of directing your anger to the cons in the Pentagon and Whitehouse who really were responsible.Be a good contard, find a liberal to blame, don’t think, just get outraged and pout.

Washington DC is filled with representatives and senators who are or want to be a disgrace to this country. Why we have to be annoyed by people of this ilk I don’t know.
