Who gets to be a candidate?

July 14, 2007 - 8:12 am - by Roger L Simon

Perpetual candidate Dennis Kucinich is in a snit. The Ohio Congressman has lashed out at John Edwards for suggesting the number of presidential candidates in debates should be limited. According to the AP, “Kucinich’s comments came after Edwards and Hillary Rodham Clinton were overheard Thursday discussing the possibility of limiting the number of participants in future presidential forums.”

At first glance, Kucinich would seem to be in the right. Democracy dictates openness.

But wait. Who gets to be a candidate anyway? Why Dennis who barely registers on the polls but seems to spend his entire life running for office? Why this unbelievably tedious narcissist? Why not you or me or anybody else? Who determines who appears on those nationally televised debates? What if your neighbor were to declare for the presidency? Is it fair that he or she would be denied equal time? Chances are they would be just as bright Dennis, who often seems to have a cognitive disorder, probably brighter.

The system clearly has some inherent corruption. While my sympathies are with Clinton and Edwards – let’s get Kucinich off the air already – something is obviously askew here.

UPDATE: Perhaps the Pajamas Media formula – or something like it – should be applied. If a candidate fails to register on national polls after a certain number of weeks or months, they should be removed. Call it the Ron Paul Formula. (Tonight Mr. Paul will once more be dumped from the PJM poll for failing to reach one percent on the latest Gallup.)

The Democrats, as currently constituted, is a coalition between a malignant narcissist wing and an infantile narcissist wing. Kucinich, for all his limitations, is the sole representative of the committed infantiles, who otherwise wouldn’t have a voice.

Oh…and he does provide pure comic relief for the rest of us.

  2. I am in complete agreement. Dennis Kucinich is not a legitimate candidate. He is simply wasting everyone’s time. Kucinich therefore richly deserves to be marginalized out of the process. The Republicans should do likewise with Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo.

Who gave Hildabeast and Haircut the job of determining who is a Democratic Presidential candidate?

They need to establish a height requirement. “You must be taller than this bar to run for President as a Democrat.” That will get rid of the garden gnome, Kucinich.

    ‘All those bases on balls’.

True beisbol fans know that a base on balls is not meant as a reward to the hitter. The ‘free pass’ is meant as a punishment to the pitcher. It is critical that the bat hit the ball at some point during the game.

Kucinich is the guy that can’t hit his way on, and everybody knows will never hit his way on. And when he constantly walks his way on; well let’s just say that’s not the way the game is meant to be played. The Kucinich of baseball belong where they are allways found – in the minors.

Someone may ask – what about the Mendosa line? – players below par are allowed in the mayors all the time.

Mendosa was a master of defense, he contributed.

Que cosa trae Kusi ay juego? – Ni una ‘chata’.

A ‘chata’ is a flat (fake) bottle of whisky.

    Notin – in other words.

    By George.

We need a candidate Mendosa line.

I love the silly season. Beats reruns of Seinfeld.

Did anyone see the photo of Hillary confering with Edwards? Gad she’s a grim looking customer.

I think Dennis (my very own congressthing, btw) might be riding the public campaign finance gravy train. Much of campaign funds is spent on travel, lodging, meals for the candidate and his retinue. It’s like a big pay raise for attending events. End public finance of campaigns and see how many futile and peripheral candidates remain.
