Iran is rocking back and forth, tipping toward democracy with demonstrations and then back away from democracy with retaliation by the regime. The decisive tipping point in all of these movements comes when the regime’s soldiers refuse to fire on the demonstrators.
As in Lebanon, they need a major event to bring a million into the streets, and then the army may switch sides.
ìThe regime meanwhile is becoming visibly senile. It’s not reproducing itself, palpably senile. So even the revolutionary guards are getting a bit long in the tooth.î
Desperate people often perform desperate acts. The Iranian religious Fascists may be fearful of the future. This could provoke them to do something normally considered absurd. I can easily imagine them discretely funding terrorists to do us great harm.
When will Israel bomb the nuclear facilities? I see this as inevitable. Letís hope it occurs sooner than later.
Kenneth R. Timmerman has written ìCountdown to Crisis : The Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran.î I have not yet had a chance to read this book, but I highly respect the author. Is anyone familiar with it?
JohnH, somebody, a couple months ago I believe, published a book with a title something like “What if the Generals Won’t Shoot?”
I tried to google it, to post a link, but I can’t seem to find it. But your post summarizes the thesis, I think.
It could be said that we here in America also had a bit of a baby “boomerang”. As a matter of fact, it’s still ringing in our ears and rattling our brains. Hope theirs works out better.
David, does Israel have the technical capablilities required to take out those underground facilities?
Partly on topic (re Hitchen’s eyewitness accounts), here’s something else for the kids to be cheering about in Iraq:
New York Times says that Zarqawi’s #1 man in Iraq, Muhammad Khalaf Shakar, was captured alive.
The best part: Apparently he “always wore a suicide vest and vowed that he would never be taken alive….But not only was he captured without incident, he was “fully cooperating” with military officials”
That’s a big catch. Hat’s off to our military.
The article also has some other good news about other bad guys caught recently.
“Hat’s off to our military.”
Amen…a-friggin’-men.
“New York Times says that Zarqawi’s #1 man in Iraq, Muhammad Khalaf Shakar, was captured alive”
Sure hope he has sensitive hearing and HATES Christina Aguilera
The decisive tipping point in all of these movements comes when the regime’s soldiers refuse to fire on the demonstrators.
That one goes back at least to 1789, doesn’t it? Good observation. One of those things that’s perfectly obvious in retrospect, but far less than obvious until somebody like you points it out.
