Yesterday, I appeared on Fox News’ The Strategy Room to discuss a recent stoning in Afghanistan and the issue of stoning in general. Kimberly Guilfoyle interviewed me both skillfully and graciously. The subject is a very distressing and somewhat mysterious one for most westerners.
What does it mean when a mob of men, numbering anywhere from 50 to 200, stone a female child to death — as happened in October of 2008 in Somalia? That poor soul was not only a 13-year-old child, she had also just been raped. Indeed, that was her sole “crime” and the reason for her torture-execution. She was forced into a hole and buried nearly up to her neck. She took a long time to die and kept crying out for her life. In addition to the 50 active stoners, 1000 more men cheered them on.
What does this tell us?
First, that barbarians are mainly cowards who do not view themselves as responsible for their actions. Everyone is the murderer and therefore, no one is the murderer. The group both absorbs and atones for any possible guilt or hesitation that even one individual might have felt. However, as we shall see, there is also another way of looking at this.
For a culture presumably so concerned with “honor,” so consumed with concepts of responsibility towards the family, clan, or “ummah” (Muslim people), those who stone a living being to death utterly shrink from any individual responsibility for carrying out their bloody deeds. Entire families become conspirators in an honor killing; village and religious councils collaborate to issue a death sentence; Muslim men sexually harass women in the streets (of Egypt) — and in large mosque-inflamed mobs (in Algeria).
In terms of stoning, which is primarily a contemporary Muslim-only custom, not only do cowardly men hide behind each other, clearly they lack the ability to act as individuals. That power is reserved for one man, one leader, one ruling cabal only. In Afghanistan, the Taliban hooligans threw the first stones.

I know there are good Muslims. I’ve met and befriended several. That does not, unfortunately, eliminate the fact that there seem to be more bad ones – and every bad one not denounced by the good ones adds to Judy’s attitude. America is not the only one that should be “winning hearts and minds.” In fact, America has (or had?) won plenty of hearts and minds through a century of good deeds. Time for others to man up a bit.

I am personally sickened by the brutal murder ot that little girl carried out by Moslems.
However the Moslem Sharia not only condones this inhuman behavior, it actually orders it, and even behavior more disgusting and bestial. The problem with meteing out punishment that is similar in its brutality to the crime committed is not that it unjustly harms the criminal, but that it brutalizes the character of the one administering the punishment. If you have never tortured a person slowly to death, you are a different person after you have done it the first time, and you cannot retrieve your lost innocence. This is why after long and brutal wars, there are decades of vendettas, bushwacking, banditry and general cruelty and violence before people learn through generational change to live again in peace. Therefore, if a crime is deemed to deserve capital punishment, it should be done quickly and cleanly and no one should revel in it.

You make a lot of assertions which bear little fruit in historical reality. First the speed..or niceness of execution does not matter as to reducing crime. If it did, then we would have less now that we cuddle scum with a nice series of injections instead of a rope or more appropriate measures such as tar and feathering.

Environmentalists should be appalled at the sky high birth rates and desertification of their land. Sociologists should be condemning the family cycle of violence, pederasty and misogyny. Pastors and even the Pope should rail against the sin. Geneticists and doctors need to condemn the consequences of inbreeding. Our military should recognize it as the source of cannon fodder. Our courts need to gin up enforcement. Western politicians should realize the coming wave of impoverished, starving people overwhelming the borders. The constitutions in Iraq and Afghanistan should have abolished it, like Attaturk did. We don’t need to utter the name of the Satanic religion, just condemn the practice of polygamy with social and scientific facts.

To condemn the practice of stoning itself, I would have to condemn the Old Testament, and that I cannot do. Still, I can condemn the injustice in the arbitrary nature by which this sentence is implemented. If every adulteress duly convicted by eyewitness testimony were stoned alongside her paramour, I could not raise an objection, but only rarely is this an accurate description.

Issue powerful handguns and plenty of ammo to every woman living in a Muslim-majority country, and pass some international resolutions stating that any woman in these countries who feels that her life is being threatened is licensed to shoot to kill any man she believes is doing the threatening. Mythbuster : confused? The Old Testament punishments are prefaced in Leviticus by the good neighbour principle or golden rule. Jesus said in everything apply the golden rule as this sums up the Law and the Prophets. This gives primacy to restoration and rehabilitation over punishment. Jesus taught and demonstrated this in his transformational encounters with tax collectors, prostitutes and adulterers. Even more Jesus spoke as the ultimate authority in interpreting and applying Old Testament law, as seen for example in chapter 5 of Matthew’s gospel where his teachings are supreme. He didn’t abolish the moral law but punishments were “set aright” by him so that capital punishment was no longer required or allowed. That much is clear from the example of the woman caught in adultery in chapter 8 of John’s gospel.

Where capital punishment is still practiced in the West it is done only for particularly heinous crimes such as first degress murder, after a trial with due process of law and a finding of fact by a jury that the accused in guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Even then there are endless appeals available, so that murderers languish for 25 years before being executed.
It always seems to me that most of those who oppose capital punishment as a matter of principle do not have much respect for life, for they are unwilling to respect the life of the murder victim. Respect would require doing to the murderer, by what are considered more humane means of killing than the perp used, what he did to his victim. It is not lex talionis because such proportionate punishment is used only for especially heinous crimes, not even for every murder, let alone for lesser crimes. So there is no danger, if we limit it to particularly heinous crimes, of executing the Widow Brown for stealing breadcrumbs. But under Islamic law she, or her daughter, might well be stoned if she was raped. And what other punishment is really appropriate for vicious murder anyway? A twenty year prison sentence reduced to eight years so the prisons can be cleared of overcrowding, or because a leftist judge does not want to “ruin this fine young man’s life” by sending him to prison for murder?

For those who are interested in digging deeper to understand how Muslims view the world around them I strongly recommend reading “The Closing of the Muslim Mind” by Robert Reilly. (Available through Amazon). The author has serious academic credentials.
Before about 900 CE the Muslim world was indeed a bastion of free-thinking in the way Pres. Obama describes them. The Muslim culture experienced a certain degree of the “enlightenment” which was to dominate the development of Western civilization and thought from around 1600 CE to the present. I.e free-thinking, always searching for answers, rationalization, etc. It is what ultimately led to free, democratic societies as we enjoy today. The Muslims were likewise deep into science, medicine, literature, political philosophy, etc. They just did it 1,000 years earlier! The source of this free-thinking was Hellenic in nature. The Muslim world butted right up against the Byzantine culture and it’s long traditions going back to ancient Greece.
But then at about 900 CE a very large conflict insued within the Muslim world It’s importance cannot be understated since it affected (some might say “infected”) Islam from that time to the present. Islam was split into factions known as the Mu’tazlites (followers of free and rational thought) and the Ash’arites (believers in total submission). The conflict was 200 years long and resulted in a complete takeover by the Mu’tazlites. Free-thinking ended in Islam at that time. The basis for their thinking is that free-will and free-thought do not exist. Everthing….literally everything is under the complete control of Allah. Not even a single molecule of blood moves through your body without Allah making it happen and directly and at the instant it moves. A major corollary to this though is that all….literally all daily events are also controlled by Allah. If a Muslim man has an urge to rape a woman he does so knowing deep in his heart that Allah is making it happen. He has no free choice in the matter therefore he is not responsible….Allah is responsible. It takes no imagination to see where this mindset leads and we see it every day in the Muslim world and the West. When a Muslim says, “I’ll see you tomorrow, Allah willing” we think of it as just a cultural saying like, “Have a good day.” Not true. He really means exactly what he’s saying.
So…..Muslims are not responsible for their actions. ONLY Allah is responsible. The blame is conveniently shifted away from the individual. This way of thinking explains alsmost everything we see daily.

You got it backwards. The Mut’azilites were defeated, and the Ash’arites became the dominant theological school. Reilly ascribes this conflict to the Ash’arite insistance on the unlimited omnipotence of Allah as a fundamental assumption of theology. The world is recreated at every instant by the will of allah. Allah is not constrained by, for example, gravitation. If He wants stones to fall upward then they will. Any view of the world, natural or human, operating according to natural laws is anathema, since it would put constraints on Allah, which is forbidden by assumption. Reilly notes that Ash’arism became known as a middle way or compromise since it stood between the Mut’azilites’ belief in the viability of reason and the popular view of reading the Qur’an literally.
In Islam the enemies of reason won. Avicenna, who advocated the reconciliation of reason and revelation, saw his books burned. In Judaism the same views were put forward by Maimonides, and in Christianity by Thomas Aquinas. The reaction of those faiths was different than that of Islam. Maimonides became one of the great, revered thinkers of Judaism; Jews say that from Moses to Moses there was no one like Moses (Maimonides). The Catholic Church declared Aquinas a saint, and his thought has been central to Christian thinking ever since.

The Old Testament also talks about stoning as a punishment for certain acts. Acts that violated God’s standard. But after seeing the “Stoning of Soria” I doubt it had any similarities with what is done under Sharia. It was the most brutal way I could ever imagine to murder a human being aside from crucifiction. But I’m also certain that there were rules that God gave for stoning. Whenever those that rebelled against God, judgement was swift. As awful as it is, but there is a difference between throwing a hail of stones and death coming quickly versus having first the accuser and then the individual family members and then every one else commiting this bastardly deed. Especially burying the victim up to their waist so that they can’t move.
I expect stoning by Jews was just as horrible as stoning by Muslims is today. I see no reason to whitewash my ancestors in this respect. But post-exilic Judaism moved towards a more humane view and dropped that sort of punishment, a process of religious evolution that still goes on. In the Qur’an Jews are criticized by Muslims for no longer meting out stoning as a punishment, in contravention of what the Hebrew Bible tells them to do. Early Muslims evidently could not stand the idea of people changing their practices to be more humane.
They sound,to me, like a blood thirsty lot. If on a certain day when passion runs high and they have no christians to harrass and kill. Well, one of the weaker of their sect will do, that is, as long as its bloody and they can participate.

Allah’s Apostle [Muhammad] did carry out the punishment of stoning and so did we after him. I am afraid that after a long time has passed, somebody will say, ‘By Allah, we do not find the Verse of the Rajam in Allah’s Book,’ and thus they will go astray by leaving an obligation which Allah has revealed. And the punishment of the Rajam is to be inflicted to any married person (male & female), who commits illegal sexual intercourse, if the required evidence is available or there is conception or confession…

In the Qur’an “Allah” says at least 25 times that Muhammad is to be obeyed. That is one reason why the vast majority of Muslim scholars accept the Bukhari hadiths and a few other hadith collections as authoritative for Muslims: canonical hadiths show what Muhammad did and said, permitted and forbade.
Where are the voices in the U.S., who raised a rukus which led to an investigation and punishment of the U.S. soldiers for putting underwear on the heads of Muslim prisoners in Abu Ghraib and doing other inane things, which may have been unpleasant, but were essentially harmless, because the prisoners complained they were shamed? I enjoyed the article. The comments, however, have me worried. I find it truly surprising how many people are ready and willing to condemn an entire religion, an entire chunk of the worlds population, based on the actions of a few. The practices of the radical muslims within the middle east are disgusting and inhuman, but they do not represent the views of the entire group. It’s like claiming that all Christians are terrible, bigoted racists and homophobes based solely on the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church. You’re taking the worst of the worst and applying it to everyone.

I love how Islam is now the new guilt free group to generalize and hate. Recently, In Nigeria, Christian Evangelical pastors have been rounding up kids, calling them witches, and in complete accordance with the Holy Bible, killing them in extremely brutal ways. Yet I see no denouncement from the right at all, while Islam is specifically targeted. And by the way, I am equally opposed to BOTH these events, because the religion itself is only second most important, it only matters that they are doing terrible things to people, and any super hardcore believer in something untrue (religion) has the capacity to be made a slave. We should be working to spread enlightenment and education, and to be supporting people of ALL faiths to stand against the crazies, rather than lumping them all together, making them dislike the west even further. I see finally most Americans starting speaking up about their true feelings about Islam. It is pretty negative….I don’t blame them…. I was born Muslim and never paid much attention to the religion because I was not forced to practice it and there was no stoning…or barbaric laws in Iran then. After my country, was taken over by radical Muslims, with the help of the knucklehead Jimmy Carter, I began paying attention to Islam. Gradually I read the Quran to see if the stuff is in there. I paid close attention to the Iranian leaders’ language and found out their references in Quran. Then, I became very alarmed about Islamic governments.
Unfortunately Obuma refused to back up, I mean morally, the Iranian uprising. You are asking for solution. right? help the democratic movements in middle east. Don’t leave them hanging.
The religion needs reform very urgently. Stoning is as horrifying to me as lynching black people, which happened not too long ago. That also was a group ritual.

Creeping Sharia in the United States
In some ways, it speaks of the goodness of America that we have had such difficulty coming to grips with the challenge of radical Islamists. It is our very commitment to religious liberty that makes us uncomfortable with defining our enemies in a way that appears linked with religious belief.
However, America’s commitment to religious liberty has given radical Islamists a potent rhetorical weapon in their pursuit of sharia supremacy. In a deliberately dishonest campaign exploiting our belief in religious liberty, radical Islamists are actively engaged in a public relations campaign to try and browbeat and guilt Americans (and other Western countries) to accept the imposition of sharia in certain communities, no matter how deeply sharia law is in conflict with the protections afforded by the civil law and the democratic values undergirding our constitutional system.
The problem of creeping sharia is most visibly on display in France and in the United Kingdom, where there are Muslim enclaves in which the police have surrendered authority and sharia reigns. However, worrisome cases are starting to emerge in the United States that show sharia is coming here. Andy McCarthy’s writings, including his new book The Grand Jihad, have been invaluable in tracking instances in which the American government and major public institutions have been unwilling to assert the protections of American law and American values over sharia’s religious code. Some examples include:
In June 2009, a New Jersey state judge rejected an allegation that a Muslim man who punished his wife with pain for hours and then raped her repeatedly was guilty of criminal sexual assault, citing his religious beliefs as proof that he did not believe he was acting in a criminal matter. “This court believes that he was operating under his belief that it is, as the husband, his desire to have sex when and whether he wanted to, was something that was consistent with his practices and it was something that was not prohibited.” Thankfully, this ruling was reversed in an appellate court.
In May 2008, a disabled student at a public college being assisted by a dog was threatened by Muslim members of the student body, who were reluctant to touch the animal by the prescription of sharia. The school, St. Cloud State, chose not to engage the Muslim community, but simply gave the student credit without actually fulfilling the class hours so as to avoid conflict.
In a similar instance in November 2009, a high school senior in Owatonna, Minn., was suspended in order to protect him from the threat of violence by radical Islamists when he wrote an essay about the special privileges afforded his Somali Muslim counterparts in the school environment.
In order to accommodate sharia’s prohibition of interest payments in financial transactions, the state of Minnesota buys homes from realtors and re-sells them to Muslims at an up-front price. It is simply not the function of government to use tax money to create financial transactions that correspond to a religious code. Moreover, it is a strategy to create a precedent for legal recognition of sharia within U.S. law.
Amazingly, there are strong allegations that the United States now owns the largest provider of sharia financing in the world: AIG.
Last month, police in Dearborn, Mich., which has a large Muslim population, arrested Christian missionaries for handing out copies of the Gospel of St. John on charges of “disturbing the peace.” They were doing so on a public street outside an Arab festival in a way that is completely permissible by law, but, of course, forbidden by sharia’s rules on proselytizing. This is a clear case of freedom of speech and the exercise of religious freedom being sacrificed in deference to sharia’s intolerance against the preaching of religions other than Islam.
Shockingly, sharia honor killings-in which Muslim women are murdered by their husbands, brothers or other male family members for dishonoring their family-are also on the rise in America but do not receive national attention because they are considered “domestic disturbances.” (A recent article in Marie Claire Magazine highlights recent cases and the efforts to bring national attention to this horrifying trend.)
Cases like this will become all the more common as radical Islamists grow more and more aggressive in the United States
Halleh, you’re still not doing anyone any good by going after women. Go after the men for forcing it, but leave the women alone. The fact that so many of you people are condemning the Islamic religion, and rightly so, shows that a very vast majority of the American people do know and understand what is going on in the Islamic world. Why? because of so many other sources of news, reports, articles and videos that are out there on the internet and otherwise, reporting what is happening in the world. What ever is not reported in the liberal media, will someway, somehow get reported, eventually. And this is why the likes of CNN and National Public Radio and The New York Times do not have creditability any longer.
