Is GQ’s ‘Hottest Women’ List Racist?
via GQ Publishes Offensive “Hottest Women” List | Love + Sex – Yahoo! Shine.
GQ just released their “The 100 Sexiest Women of the Millennium” issue featuring Beyonce on the cover as “Miss Millennium.” Flip through it and you’ll find the obvious nods to Jessica Simpson, Kim Kardashian, and Katie Holmes. But this year, the lad mag has included some ethnic specific categories that have some people raising their eyebrows. Examples:
• “Hottest Indian Chick”: Freida Pinto• “Hottest Pregnant Sri Lankan”: M.I.A
• “Hottest Italian Chick”: Monica Belluci
• “Hottest Chinese Chick”: Zhang Ziyi (sometimes credited as Ziyi Zhang)

While there may not be anything inherently wrong with saying someone is a “Hot Chinese woman” the seemingly arbitrary racial call-outs have people squirming. For example, why did the magazine deem Beyonce “Miss Millennium” but not “Miss African-American Millennium?” Mila Kunis was included in the top three hottie picks but the magazine didn’t mention her Ukranian roots. Meh. Nothing offensive about that. I am Jewish and a “hottest Jewish Chick” category wouldn’t bother me, quite the opposite (Bar Raphaeli. Mila Kunis is also up there).
People who are uncomfortable with something like that have their own issues. Lighten up people…”Hottest pregnant Sri Lankan” Now that is funny
People choose to be Jewish. They have no choice about being born ethnically Chinese or Italian.
This is really a non-issue. Though I will say this much anyway: Are various women labeled by Esquire as, for example, Chinese simply because they have Chinese ancestry? Or is it because they have that ancestry AND are citizens of, say, China?
Mila Kunis is an American citizen, at least as far as I know. Therefore an American magazine wouldn’t need to reference her nationality. It would be silly–and yes, this is all silly–to label her as a “hot Ukranian chick” given her American birth and upbringing (I assume).
“Hot Ukrainian chick” is, from all the Ukrainians I’ve or seen, redundant. And Mila Kunis was actually born in Ukraine. Or the Ukraine. Whatever.
GQ has established its left-wing bona fides so it can get away with doing what it wants.
The same people who give GQ a pass are the ones who went berserk about Brent Musberger calling a woman beautiful.
You know, it’s hard to get excited about this when there’s a category for “Hottest Blue Chicks” including Smurfette.
