I’m not sure how it applies, but in Joss Whedon’s Serenity, Captain Mal Reynolds, who has been described as “imagine Han Solo before he met up with Luke and Obi-Wan”, shoots first when he meets up with the bad guy.
Of COURSE Mal shoots first. We WANT him to shoot first. We KNOW that the bad guy is bad, we KNOW that trying to reason with him is a waste of time. I’m not saying “shoot first, ask questions later”, I’m saying “If you have the answers, go ahead and shoot first the next time you see the bad guy”. If a thug broke into your house, would you try to reason with him, or just shoot him? After all, he broke into your house, you already have the question answered of whether or not he means you harm, what more do you need to know?
