This is Epic CNN Fail

August 28, 2010 - 4:46 pm - by Ed Driscoll

Layers and layers of editors, fact checkers and producers, and the Chyron guys still manage to get this on the air:

As Inside Cable News notes:

One would think the network with the “Best Political Team on Television” could tell the difference between Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin….not to mention spell Palin’s name right…

Update: Or knew that she ran for VICE-President. How’d I miss that one? This may be the most Hazard riddled screen grab in ICN history. I think three Hazards for one still is a record…

A few months ago, CNN’s Roland Martin was busy insulting his potential audience, when perhaps he might have wanted to point a middle finger or two at his own network:

“We got some pretty dumb people,” says the Chicago-based CNN contributor, relaxing in the network’s offices at Tribune Tower between appearances discussing “broken government.” “I mean, I know we’re not supposed to call Americans dumb…but sometimes you gotta go ahead and say it.”

Huh. You would think a network that has called half of the country alternately dumb, racist, Nazi-like and Islamophobic in recent years would hold itself to a much higher standard. On the plus side, at least CNN got the location correct on the lower third.

  1. Not to mention that it’s not spelled “Sara.”

  2. And these people wonder why they’re hemorrhaging viewers?

Huh. You would think an article making fun of a network for typos would check for typos. “…a network that has called half of the county…” Maybe you deserve to be called dumb.

    • Thanks for pointing out the typo — fixed. And thanks for pointing out how the Blogosphere has tilted the playing field, by tacitly comparing a one-man blog to a 30 year old billion-dollar television institution.

      • Myron Falwell

Hey, at this point, CNN’s viewing audience probably is about half of an average county. So I don’t see the big deal here. ;)

    • Integer

Really? He left the “r” out of country? Egad! This shocking development is completely unprecedented! One man forgot one letter! How can we be expected to listen to anyone on Pajamas Media if one of its writers makes a single-letter spelling error that even a spellchecker would miss!

…That the reaction you were hoping for? You really think this is equivalent? CNN called a man a woman. They called a former vice-presidential candidate a presidential candidate. They can’t even get her name right, despite the fact that she has constantly been in the public eye for about two years. And unlike Mr Driscoll, CNN has an army of staff who’re supposed to check this stuff.

Look, sir, if you wanna point out right-wing idiocy, be our guest. Stupidity can be found on both sides of the political spectrum. But please don’t try to argue that a single misspelling is equal to a complete identity swap.

    • And notice how quickly Ed not only corrected the mistake, but admitted it in the same forum that the mistake was made in.

Has CNN yet apologized for that error?

I just searched Dogpile (my search engine of choice), and I couldn’t find any apology or admission of error by CNN.

Apparently CNN follows the old media practice of leaving the third-string team to run the ‘shop’ on the weekend.

CNN is video Muzak. Mistakes don’t matter.
Besides, the (R) is probably right.

You know that with no Tea Party-8/28-conservative crazies in general going out to terrorize the population of Washington, D.C. on Saturday, CNN hated covering this story. They hated having to send cameras to the event, they hated having to man t he production facilities to show the rally and they hated having to watch the monitors while the live event was on, to the point that some summer intern stuck working his last weekend of the pay period probably typed the wrong information into the graphics chiron and — because nobody at CNN wanted to focus on this very hard — nobody was paying close enough attention to catch the mistake before it went out on the air.

  7. 7. Mary

beck asked that no signs be brought to the rally. That really caused CNN to lose all focus.
Who could they designate the rally bigot?
AWWWW- Glad to see this partisan, disgusting network fall from view…who needs it?

    I disagree.

I think this was deliberate, pre-conceived and approved by this intellectually bankrupt “most trusted name in news” network.

These on-screen labels and monikers were prepared well before Saturday. All designed to denigrate, demonize and desensitize the impact of the Beck event.

The interesting question is why the Reverend Sharpton group could only amass a few thousand supporters on this historic day for black people and civil rights accomplishment.

Who is asking that question? Nobody.

Obama has clearly set Black Constituencies progress back a few years maybe decades. He is the biggest divider, inciter and race baiter this country has ever seen.

I like that NASA called in support to the 33 trapped Chilean miners.

NASA dudes…from SPACE: “Yeah, sorry. That Gene Kranz guy, his crew, those PhD astronauts, & all those fellas from Grumman & North American & what have you…you know, the ones who put men on the Moon? They could totally get you out. But they’re all really old & mostly dead now. Plus, that was a long time ago, and, in all honesty, we at NASA just don’t give a damn anymore. It’s too hard. But we’re waiving at you from high up & stuff. Really, we swear! Orbit is kewl!! There’s space junk, Russian cabbage farts (cut it out Vitali), and a now functioning Comcast satellite. Anyway, I have to go check the shuttle’s heat shield tiles for foam bustage & call a buncha Muslims with self esteem issues. Good luck in your really deep hole.”

If somebody can tell me Rick Sanchez was involved in this, I could die a very happy man…

Remember when Wolf Blitzer was on Celebrity Jeopardy! last year, and flunked right out of it?

Because it was for charity, Wolf was allowed to play Final Jeopardy! despite the $4,600 debt he incurred (which went to benefit the American Cancer Society). In every other circumstance, you’re outta there.

And considering his competition that nightyeah.
