Innovations in gaming move at a steady clip, with huge leaps forward occurring every once in a while. Three dimensional graphics and the advent of online networks stand out as game changers (pun intended) which enabled a whole new kind of experience.
Such a paradigm shift is upon us again with the dawn of consumer-grade virtual reality. Current and former cast members from the Star Trek franchise come together in the video below to demonstrate a new title in development for VR platforms. From StarTrek.com:
Today at E3 in Los Angeles, Ubisoft announced a fall release for Star Trek: Bridge Crew, a new virtual reality game that will allow players to explore space as a member of the Federation. Playable co-operatively with a crew or solo as Captain, Star Trek: Bridge Crew puts players directly onto the bridge in a Starfleet ship. The game will be available on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
Levar Burton, Jeri Ryan, and Karl Urban share their in-game experience and describe how it differs from anything which has come before.
“You’re interacting with each other, and you’re talking to each other, and you’re taking orders from the captain,” Ryan gushes. “It’s really cool.”
“Co-op gameplay is not new,” Burton expounds. “We can play games with our friends [today]. But there’s something different about being in a shared virtual environment.”
Oddly, this technology could lead to a resurgence of in-home multiplayer gatherings the likes of which fell out of fashion with the rise of online gaming. There’s nothing quite like being in the room with the people you’re playing with, especially when that room transforms into an entirely different space.
