Superman's Home World to Be Explored in Syfy Series

On screen, Superman’s home world of Krypton has been one of the least explored aspects of his near 80 years’ worth of mythology. Typically referenced only in passing as part of the character’s origin story, the highly advanced alien society has served primarily as a plausible source for the fantastic, and not much more.

That’s about to change. An impressive creative team moves to bring the iconic planet to television on the Syfy network. From Collider:

The series is set up as a Superman prequel, and will take place two generations before the the Man of Steel is forced to leave his planet on the brink of destruction.

According to a press release, the series “will follow Superman’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.” As we learned last month, Damien Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) has been set as the showrunner, while Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders) will direct the pilot. [David S.] Goyer has written the pilot script along with Once Upon a Time’s Ian Goldberg.

It’s worth noting that Goyer has penned several scripts for DC Comics films, including the Dark Knight franchise, Man of Steel, and this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. That’s a pedigree running the gamut from legendary to so-so. But he certainly knows the source material.

It’s unclear whether the series will take place within the continuity of the ongoing DC Comics Extended Universe films. To date, Warner Bros. has kept their film and television properties in separate universes.
