Like any committed “democratic” socialist, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seems to understand that taxes are for the little people. Daily Caller’s Andrew Kerr revealed late yesterday that a tax warrant against the New York congresscritter’s failed business venture remains unpaid, six months after her office said they would make good on her debt to the state.
The bankrupt Brook Avenue Press owes more than $1,600 in corporate taxes.
Kerr reports that the Bronx County Clerk — where Brook Avenue Press was founded and floundered — noted that the “tax warrant remains open and that a satisfaction of judgment has yet to be filed in the matter.”
For less than two grand, AOC could have cleared this up, but has apparently been too busy criticizing “billionaires who are forcing taxpayers to help them correct their own capitalist errors.”
Honey, it ain’t just billionaires.
Ironically enough, Kerr’s report comes just days after the New York Times — AOC’s hometown DNC mouthpiece — published a story on the young pol headlined “How Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Learned to Play by Washington’s Rules.” Reporter Catie Edmondson wrote that AOC has “tempered her brash, institution-be-damned style with something different: a careful political calculus that adheres more closely to the unwritten rules of Washington.” That might be a tough sell to fellow House Democrat Daniel Lipinski (Illinois), after Ocasio-Cortez endorsed his primary challenger last week. Nevertheless, the NYT story quotes AOC claiming, “I think I have more of a context of what it takes to do this job and survive on a day-to-day basis in a culture that is inherently hostile to people like me.”
People who complain about bailouts while failing to pay their taxes?
Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez is making headlines in my neck of the woods, headlining a sold-out event at CU-Boulder where she pleaded for the “Democratic Party to adopt progressive roots.” AOC’s focus remains almost purely on national events, tweeting out “At this point, the bigger national scandal isn’t the president’s lawbreaking behavior it is the Democratic Party’s refusal to impeach him for it” on Saturday night.
People back home are noticing AOC’s lack of concern for their concerns. The New York Post reported last week that she would be “vulnerable to a re-election challenge.” A new survey conducted by the “Stop The AOC” PAC, found that 47% of Democrats in her district view her favorably, 29% unfavorably, and 24% unsure. Yes, that’s a partisan PAC with a mission, but even they can skew the numbers only so far.
Whether or not you trust the polls, Ocasio-Cortez has already drawn her first challenger for 2020. Claiming “she’s never in our district,” local Democratic activist Badrun Khan announced her primary campaign on Monday. What really seems to be driving Khan’s effort is AOC’s sabotage of Amazon’s since-canceled plans to build a new HQ in Queens. Amazon would have brought in billions of dollars and about 25,000 full-time jobs.
But what could jobs and tax revenues possibly mean to the people of Queens, when they have AOC saving the planet for them from climate change, President Trump, and moderate Democrats?
