It looks like we’re trading in one Islamist regional power for another. The old one has a military hobbled by thirty years of sanctions and a disillusioning, eight-year-long war with its neighbor, and an unloved regime. The new one has lots of M1 Abrams tanks, and a just-elected Islamist parliament with plenty of popular support.

I wish we were trading down, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
