Well, neither could Kerry, Gore, Dukakis, Mondale, Carter on his second go-’round, McGovern, Humphrey, or Stevenson (twice). But that didn’t stop the Democrats from nominating them — and those nine candidates stretch back just 14 election to 1952. Winnability doesn’t seem to be a very high priority for Democratic primary voters.
