On Thursday night, CNN’s Chris Cuomo brought out a white board and wrote “SH*THOLE” on primetime television. Not only did he call President Donald Trump this name, he also twisted the story of how Trump used the word.
“We just have to be very clear about what’s going on in the White House, because the president is just showing you who he is. This is who he is, okay? We sum it up in a word, okay? There it is,” Cuomo said, as he wrote “SH*THOLE,” with an “I.”
Cuomo continued berating Trump. “This is the gift that he decided to give the American people. It’s a bad word, my kids are watching right now. I don’t want to teach my kids and your kids a bad word, our president decided to make that choice.”
Trump did not speak the word in public, he said it in a closed-door setting. In fact, CNN reported that the president “expressed frustration behind closed doors with people coming to the US from ‘sh*thole countries'” (emphasis added).
Trump reportedly asked, “Why do we want all these people from ‘sh*thole countries’ coming here?” He also mentioned a preference for immigrants from Norway as opposed to Haiti, sources said.
Trump did not “make that choice,” i.e. speak the word in public for everyone to hear. Even so, Cuomo continued berating Trump.
“Here’s the mistake, hiding from the word, not speaking it, not talking about it because it’s too ugly. Well, this is just how he is. He was voted in, so it’s okay, it’s not okay. It is who he is, it wasn’t a fit of pique,” the CNN anchor said. “It wasn’t a slip of the tongue — how do we know? He’s given us the same impression of how he feels every chance he has.”
Cuomo went on to list some other potentially racist remarks from the president:
Facts. According to the New York Times, last summer, in another immigration meeting, the president said Haitians all have AIDS. And immigrants from Nigeria would never go back to their huts after seeing the United States. As a candidate, Mr. Trump called Mexicans rapists and insulted an American born judge of Mexican descent. Each time you hear one of these, we laugh it off, it’s always been a mistake. Who can forget when he infamously equated white supremacists with the people protesting against them last August in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Trump did win the primaries — and the general election — partially because he “told it how it is,” but many of these remarks are just horrible.
That said, CNN has had a field day with the opportunity to say “sh*thole” … with the “i.” Here’s a supercut of the times CNN anchors spoke the profanity.
Is Trump racist? “Mexican” is not a race, Haiti does have the highest overall cases of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean, and there are very underdeveloped parts of Nigeria (as well as Africa’s biggest city, Lagos). The president’s Charlottesville remarks were bad, but Antifa protesters have indeed been violent — though not as odious ideologically as white supremacists.
One thing is for certain: CNN anchors love to say (or in Cuomo’s case write) the word “sh*thole.” You can take that to the bank.
