In a press conference Monday morning in Warwick, Rhode Island, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump attacked his competitor, Ohio Governor John Kasich, on such substantive policy issues as not eating with “small, little bites.”
The Donald was responding to reports of collusion between the camps of his challengers, Ted Cruz and Kasich, which leaked Sunday night. Trump released a vindictive statement shortly afterward attacking both as “puppets of donors and special interests” who “have had to revert to collusion in order to stay alive.” In that statement, he argued those campaigns are “mathematically dead,” as neither candidate can gain the 1,237 delegates necessary to win the Republican nomination outright.
On Monday, he took a less measured tone in attacking Kasich.
You look at Kasich, I don’t think he knows…did you see he has a news conference all the time when he’s eating. I’ve never seen a human being eat in such a disgusting fashion. I’m always telling my young son, Baron, I’d say, children, small little bites. This guy takes a pancake and he’s shoving it in his mouth. Disgusting! Do you want that for your president? I don’t think so. I don’t think so.
To be fair, Kasich is a voracious eater. An article even wondered if the Ohio governor can “eat his way back into New Yorker’s hearts.” He gained fame on Twitter for eating an absurd amount of food at a deli in the Bronx.

He even created a “Kasich special.”
Nevertheless, Trump’s attack was more “disgusting!” than Kasich’s eating habits, however messy they may be. When a presidential candidate resorts to attacking an eating style, rather than policy positions or ideas, it may be time to pull the plug. Then again, we also thought so following his remarks on Megyn Kelly and attacks on John McCain as not being a war hero because he was captured.
Unfortunately, The Donald still dominates polls in upcoming contests. Will his messy insults hurt him, or continue to propel the disgrace he brings to our electoral politics?
