If one needed more reason to suspect many people view entry into the United States as a right, one need look no further than the comments made by the Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico regarding citizens of his nation who work with President Trump on constructing the border wall:
Mexicans who help build President Donald Trump’s planned border wall would be acting immorally and should be deemed traitors, the Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico said on Sunday, turning up the heat on a simmering dispute over the project.
In a provocative editorial, the country’s biggest Archdiocese sought to increase pressure on the government to take a tougher line on companies aiming to profit from the wall, which has strained relations between Trump and the Mexican government.
“Any company intending to invest in the wall of the fanatic Trump would be immoral, but above all, its shareholders and owners should be considered traitors to the homeland,” said the editorial in Desde la fe, the Archdiocese’s weekly publication.
On Tuesday, Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo warned firms it would not be in their “interests” to participate in the wall. But the editorial accused the government of responding “tepidly” to those eyeing the project for business.
Now, Mexico has said they won’t pay for the wall, regardless of what President Trump may have said on the matter, and frankly, I don’t blame them. But that’s not what we’re talking about here.
He says that anyone who works with the administration is a traitor to Mexico. Remember, the wall would do nothing to stop the legal flow of goods and people back and forth across the border. That’s not what it’s meant to do. Instead, it’s supposed to stem the tide of illegal immigrants, gang activity, human trafficking, and any other danger flooding the American Southwest. Granted, I’m inclined to think that all it will do is spend a great deal of money without actually accomplishing anything, but that’s a different debate.
By opposing the building of a wall so vehemently and claiming any who invest in the project are traitors, he takes the absurd position that exploiting the United States is some sort of birthright. Claims that the wall would feed discrimination are ludicrous, a red herring designed to pretend those who support it are racists.
Doesn’t sound particularly Catholic of the Catholic Archdiocese to treat his neighbor like that, does it? Kind of makes me wonder what the Archdiocese has to say about Mexico’s draconian treatment of illegal immigrants entering his country.
