On Monday, the Associated Press (AP) reported that President-elect Donald Trump is considering Republican Party Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee (RNC). McDaniel is the niece of one of Trump’s most fervent attackers, 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
“I’ll be interested in whatever Mr. Trump wants,” McDaniel told the AP Monday. She also announced that she would seek the chairmanship of the Michigan Republican Party again.
Her appointment would not only be the first time a woman has led the GOP in decades, but it also might heal the party’s internal divides following Trump’s divisive nomination.
But this news is far from final, the AP added.
A source with close connections in the RNC and the Trump camp told PJ Media that disgraced former campaign manger Corey Lewandowski was still the first choice for RNC chair among the Trump camp. “The Trump kids do not like Corey and do not want him at the White House,” the source told PJ Media. “But Trump likes him and wants to give him something,” and to keep him outside the White House, sources say Trump intends to name him RNC chairman.
But Lewandowski “does not want to be RNC chairman, he wants to be at the White House.” This might be one of the key reasons why the campaign has not announced his selection.
The source insisted that many of the staff leaks are not reliable. For example, the rumors that New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte was being considered for Secretary of Defense are “completely not true.”
Any rumors about the RNC chairmanship should be taken with a grain of salt, as Trump’s transition team remains focused on top jobs in the administration at the moment, the source concluded.
